Head to head, this is a really close fight. Both guys faced similar opposition, but lost in their marquee fights. Nielson didnt look the prettiest, but otherwise a good fighter with a solid chin. I say its a pickem

Nielson had arguably the best straight right in the division in his prime and his infighting skills were second, maybe, only to a prime tyson in the last 50 years. I think it is unfair to compare Vitali to a top 20ATG. Vitali is very good but Nielson is a step above i'm afraid.

I would agree. He almost tied the unmatched record of Marciano. If it only wasnt for that Dickie Ryan.

Brian Nielson, how can a guy fight 64 times and never actually fight anyone with a pulse outside of a sub-prime Mike Tyson (who beat him).

Vitali fought the better competition and fared better. He is more skilled, more powerful, and has the better chin.

And that's your considered UNBIASED opinion, genius.
You're starting to become obsessive.
Or could I be mistaken and you're just a big Nielson fan?

Speaking of Dickie Ryan, its a shame we never got to see him reach his full potential, on top of the world after a tremendous victory over Nielson, it all fell apart quickly, some people just can't handle being at the top.

I am danish and I liked Nielsen because it was all about fun every time he entered the ring - but there is no way he beats Vitali. Okay then, maybe 3 out of 100 - but that´s it!

Vitali has athletic ability, unlike Nielsen , and is taller, stronger, smarter, hits harder, is far more skilled & anything else you can think of! WTF is wrong with you?

vitali has everything better than nielson who is a tough guy himself but would just be out classed if he fought vitali in his prime or not

No, it's just Dickie Ryan is what Dickie Ryan is.. a journeyman talent.

Jesus I thought everyone would see that this thread is just meant as a wind up! For the record my previous comments were sarcastic, If nielson fought vitali 100 times he would maybe make it out of the 3rd round 3times, Vitali was at the top when he retired, Nielson has never been in the top 10. I can't believe i'm answering this seriously now. Still a shame about Dicky Ryan though:yep

Vitali was by far the best heavyweight before his injury, how people so easily forget...:-(
Are you crazy?! Vitali would beat Brian Neilsen EVERY TIME! :!:
Probably - but 1:33 is likely to how it would look like at the bookmakers.

Why is this a joke? There has to be something said for a guy winning 45+ plus fights without a defeat. He was valiant in his effort against Tyson, was a decorated olmypian, and holds wins over such fighters as Jeremy Williams, Larry Holmes, Tim Witherspoon, Tony TNT Tubbs, and Orlin Norris. I wouldnt say Vitali has faced and beaten much better. Please someone tell me why Vitali would just destroy Nielson. His record and pedigree speaks for itself. :hey

While I can't argue with your logic here, having seen both of them fight I can't even imagine Nielsen beating VITLAY I'm afraid.
Nielsen did have a tremendous chin though from what I remember so maybe he could hang on and give VITLAY a dead arm and make him quit like Byrd did so in that respect he's got a chance.

Agreed.
These worthless threads are started by those trying desperately to downgrade the return of King Vitali.
I think knowledgeable boxing fans know that Vitali is quite a bit better than Brian., this BS just gets them off. :-(

King Vitali?
Based on their respective records, that simply isnt true. They fought similar competition with Super Brian having more wins. How can you say he was quite better?

I dont know, I can see Super Brian taking some punishment in the early rounds, and then finally starting to land the overhand right which would lead to a late round stoppage. Nielson TKO rd 9.:bbb

Vitali would have destroyed him, toe-to-toe.
In achievements...well, Vitali was the man from 2004 to 2005 and beat 4 Ring Top10 contenders. Nielsen beat none.

Vitali would have killed him if they fought!
Nobody killed super Brian
Clearly his recordlist is not the best...but Brian Nielsen was a better boxer then he lokked like, on the other side you have americans lika a Michael Grant who looked way better then he really where!

Well that's settled it then.

What made him the man...??? He won the championship by default, beating someone other than LL...something that in itself may have proven to be unimportant over time. However, it can't be overlooked since he never did shit after winning the default championship. He never established dominance over the division. He was not the man.

And please remember he did not beat Lewis, he was stopped on cuts, before the eventual KO that Lewis would have dropped on him.
were talking about brian here... the guy that went toe to toe with tyson, who was all about ready to own boxing as we know it until tyson landed that lucky punch.

Vitali uses his size to a great advantage obvisously. Vitali has such long arms, he can fight on the outside of range of opponent to land, while Vitali can still bust opponents up due to his reach . It is a massive advatage being tall in boxing.
Espcially , if someone could build a time machine you would find out just how much size matters!! Like Vitali is going to get his ass beat by a 5'11 195 lbs HW of the past.

He was 6'3" but nice try. Chris Byrd was the 195 pounder.:yep

Yes, Vitali was never dominant and was never Lineal.
Marvin Hart was also never dominant and wasn't Lineal and he was considered the man. In fact, most HW Champions haven't been dominant except the really great ones.
