Anyone read it?

There's quite a few funny anecdotes in it :D

One about him, maccranelli, his dad and one of ******'s men going over to Florida for the "WBO awards". They went to a bar for a few drinks when after buying drinks Joe went to the bathroom and came back to find someone had taken his seat. When Joe politely asked for it back the guy started acting like a tough man infront of his mates and bird. ******'s guy was speaking to the bird at the time who explained (obviously not knowing who Joe was) "Don't worry he won't beat him up he's only playing around"
******'s guy replied "Do you know your local fighter Jeff Lacy?"
"Ofcourse" the girl replied
"Well that's the guy that beat the shit out of him sixths months ago" :rofl

Apparently the guy didn't stop trying to buy Joe drinks after that.

On a more serious note, the stories of Joe training as an amateur are shocking. He litterally killed himself to make the weight all the way through his amateur career even as a young boy. He talks of how his dad made him train his arse off to an almost cruel extent and how he pretty much lived off of a few leafes of lettuce and a tomato on the run up to fights, if he ate at all that is.

he also said he would never fight RJJ

It's well above average as boxers' autobiographies go, some revealing inside thoughts and opinions, including, as pointed out above, the now infamous `I'll never fight a washed up steroid-addled Roy Jones Jr never ever ever honest.`

Remember on the Bunce show he explained that Jones had proved him wrong with his performance in the felix trinidad fight. Don't really think that's a valid excuse but who can blame Joe as it was probably the biggest pay day out there at the time and his last fight after all.

I'd say this was one of the better autobios i've read of boxers. Eubanks was shite, just him trying to sound smart and philisophical the whole time. Sugar Ray Robinson's was a belter.

some of the stories in it about him and guys from ingles.and his childhood,he said he once caught a salesman fucking his dog.he doesnt try to sound clever at all,,like someone said with eubank.it seems like he has a great sense of humour.better than watching a nelson fight.

mi vida loca by johnny tapia was awesome too

Larry Holmes was the best I read, I didnt believe all his stories, but it made for a great read at the time.

I highly recommend it.

Nigel Benns book was funny as fuck also, loved his story about how he banged a girl that looked like John Lennon, Benn was a great character. I'd recommend that too!

Ken Buchanans was the worst I read though, & I feel bad about saying tht as I have a signed copy. Dont let me put anyone off though, one mans meat is another mans poison as they say.

Dunky, Larry Holmes is mental. There's a thread on here somewhere about the Funniest Moments in Boxing. It made me remember about when he dropkicked Trevor Berbick off the top of a car in the face. Definately one of the funniest things i've seen in my life let alone boxing

Some great stuff in it, wasnt there:D I read it about 10 years ago though, so my memory is a bit fuzzy now, but I loved the bit where he talked about Don King & some other promoter rolling around on the floor with a loaded gun, & of course when he said when he was walking out for the Tyson fight, he almost turned his back & walked back in!

It was a crazy book, although I must admit I was dubious about some of Larrys tales, but it really was a great read at the time, & a book I would like to read again.

If Larry fascinates you, then the book is a must read Dan, no kidding. he has something to say about everything & everyone at the time the book came out, Ali, lennox Lewis, the lot.
Full of so many crazy tales, I sound like a salesman now:lol:

Just find it if you can, & read it. Same applies to everyone here even if you are a Larry Holmes fan or not. hes a big mouth, but a mouth that always has you reading the next chapter. He draws you into the most fascinating era of heavyweight boxing, & spits you out at the end.
Not a fan of Larry the fighter that much, but hes a great storyteller. & THATS what matters in a book, if Im right!

I liked Eubank's book myself, it was a bit of an eye opener for me as I didn't know anything about his life before boxing. Michael Watson's book is good too.
Best of all, Raging Bull.

I always thought Ken Buchanan's was alright Dunky, although I read it when i was about 13 and had just got into boxing so I probably didn't have much to compare it to. I was also chuffed at the time as he mention Rab at the end of it :happy

There was some other crazy story about him fighting in a hotel in New York if i remember right.

That's a piss poor excuse, given the state Trinidad was in :patsch
Tito had lost 2 of his last 4, hadn't fought for 4 years, was fighting at an insanely high weight, and looked totally fat and out of shape....and went the distance with a former Heavyweight title holder. Yeah, great win for Jones that is Joe :good
