Of recent years anyway, at least up there at HW.
His career on paper doesn't nearly tell the entire story, and it seems we didn't see the best of him until almost a decade after he began boxing!
He got his act together in his late 30's and had some very impressive wins. 18-0 Everton David, power punching prospect Samson Po'uha.
He twice dropped Alex Stewart in a 10 round fight but was deprived of the decision.
Has a undefeated Jeremy Williams out on his feet but quits on his stool, out of nowhere more or less, when things get tough and he becomes disinterested.
Nearly knocks out Holmes in 94' with a left hook.
Beats Ray Mercer and many feel he did it twice.
He dumped some other very good fighters on their asses as well, and for years suffered just as much as any fighter ever has as he was blackballed by the powers that be.

Personally I think the Boogieman peaked as a prospect in the mid 80s, beating a young Douglas.
He was a cute Journyman, who found a few out, but was hardly the Ultimate Journyman, I mean, he was no Randy Sandy!

actually booze a win over 18-1 or whatever mercer was probably a bigger win then the Douglas win at the time ... tyson fight not withstanding

YES! Jess Fergy was a damn good fighter of the "B" level who often fought top comp...... I liked Fergy..... BUT! He did flop against Bowe in 1993 at RFK on HBO... Still, he normally gave a good tussle win or lose...........
At any rate, Fergy was better than Everett "Bigfoot" Martin........ Martin was game as well, but often in the ring to lose and get paid...
MR.BILL
P.S.
Remember Jose Ribalta??

Well, Jesse didn't have massive weight problems like Martin.
If Martin had stayed a LHW/CW his entire career who knows what he could have done?

Yes beating Mercer was a much bigger win (it got him his Championship shot), but Mercer was totally lacking in motivation for that fight, he thought it a walk over and even had to try and bribe Ferguson to lose.
But Ferguson was in his peak as a fighter I believe in the mid 80s, and that probably meant Douglas fight was his peak performance.

Who fought all the following?
Carl "Truth" Williams, Razor Ruddock, Pierre Coetzer, Tony Tucker, Mike Tyson, Buster Douglas, Johnny DuPlooy, Mike Weaver, Oliver McCall, Gary Mason, George Foreman, Alex Stewart, Tommy Morrison, David Bey, and Bert Cooper among others. And he actually beat one of these fellows.

Only journeyman/lower end fighter with a better resume of fought fighters is probably all Jackhammer Wilson.

Ferguson was a step above a journeyman. He was just lazy and inconsistent, but a good fighter. Probably could have accomplished more if he was managed better.

Jesse Ferguson wasn't a bad fighter to be honest. In fact, he looked like he had a fair amount of potential and as Russell has already pointed out, he won some pretty decent fights. I actually enjoyed watching some of his game efforts growing up. He had a pretty good hook, decent power, average chin, and a lot of heart. His skills weren't that bad either. He might have been a little better had his career been managed differently, but who knows.

Everybody's favorite victim (except Razor Ruddock's)...

Jesse Ferguson was a good fighter but from around 1987 - 1991 he was working predominantly as a sparring partner for many of the big names. A look at his record shows he was fairly "inactive" in those years but he was probably boxing hundreds of rounds a year with top heavyweights.
I guess he made a better living that way. Boxing is a cut-throat business and some shrewd talented fighters probably make the right choice becoming sparring partners and "trial horse" opponents rather than be too ambitious and get screwed and end up in a worse place.

Ross Puritty, surely?
A 'who's who' of heavyweights, most losses but also the draw against Morrison and wins against Gonzalez and Wlad.
If we're talking journeymen that fought a lot but lost to all the known names then it's always one guy that springs to mind for me, have gloves will travel - Big Tuna himself, Marcus Rhode.
