I just decided to go through my PRIDE collection. Im telling you PRIDE's legendary status will increase exponentially over the years espcially as they heralded the golen era of MMA with some of the best fighters in the world and the most entertaining shows in the history of this sport.

I used to love watching the old PRIDE events.
Unfortunately I lost them all. As I'm really a late comer to the sport (having only followed it since around the Silva-Hendo fight), I kept seeing Pride highlights on youtube and wanted to see the whole events. As such I decided to download every event from Pride, which was 90GB worth I think. Needless to say it fucked up my hard drive....at least I think it did. Luckily I managed to see all of them before I lost the hard drive.:verysad
Pride should be remembered though. Some of the best fights and fighters took place on Pride cards. I loved the intros.

I Agree Pride was geared towards entertaining people. From the entrances to the carding. This I feel is whats getting lost in MMA now. People like Frye, Wand and Saku would fuckin stand up and compromise their strenghts for the fans enjoyment.

In PRIDE you got yellow carded if there wasnt enough action and you lost a percentage of your purse. The rules were adapted to ensure the most amount of action ie no elblows on the ground to prevent cuts, and knees and stomps on the ground being allowed. Thats far more exciting than the rules of the UFC/Cage.
The entire show was literally an event akin to a Wrestlemania. 10's of thousand in attendance. Respectful fans. The excellent Screaming lady and all the fanfare and props that accompanied the event. Best MMA show on earth as far as im concerned. When i watch a show i want to be entertained. The UFC just doesnt do that for me as a product and as a whole.

I like UFC, but I gotta agree that the fight Lesnar-Herring is an exemple why knee and stomp should be allowed to prevent fighter to make a turtle out of them

And the UFC has kinda steered away from that, they should take a cue from Vince McMahon, especially if his former fighter is your HW champ.
Dana has tried his best to compete with Boxing and herein lies his problem. He wants MMA to be viewed as some kind of Sweet Science with all the techniques and intricacies:lol:
And there is a bunch followers of this movement by Dana, they are MMA purists/connoisseurs who cums when someone is taken down.
The problem is you cant be a connoissuer of bad wine. The UFC is still unrefined as a sport and the people prefer to be entertained first. Most fans still wants to see action and good action not some fluke KOs or 5 minutes of rolling around.
Sooner or later they would get tired of a Serra haymaker that knocks out the best WW in the world.
Rogan: did you see him go to half guard so quickly??? OMFG!! This guys top of the food chain!!

I never said the UFC was better then pride back in the day, I enjoyed watching pride events when they were on top, but listening to you guys post a "I miss Pride" thread every couple of weeks is humourous.
You all get your Dana White Voodoo doll and take turns sticking pins in it.
I just don't bitch and complain about everything and enjoy the fights we get. I'm not sure if you guys are girls with the amount of bitching that goes on around here.

I loved Pride. The shows were awesome. Shame it died but they wasnt the first mma/pro-wrestling promotion to die in Japan and wont be the last. Difference this time was MMA has never recovered in Japan. Pride was a promotion they fans had an emotional attachment to and K-1 and Dream dont have that.

If it was so great, why did it fail?

Because the Yakuza were the guys behind Pride. The Yakuza have always been involved in pro-wrestling/MMA in Japan and you have no choice but to deal with them when running certain buildings however before Pride the Yakuza never actually owned a promotion. The Yakuza being behind Pride wasnt an issue until it was leaked. The Shukan Gendai negative media campaign against PRIDE, linking them to organized crime, killed the company’s credibility in Japan and Fuji TV cancelled the tv deal as they couldnt be seen to be dealing with a Yakuza company. Fuji payed for all the production so that was a huge chunk of money gone. They couldnt get another tv deal as no tv company would touch them and the money that the company was generating was just being sent offshore to 'MR I' (the real owner of DSE) so the promotion after a few shows were basically bleeding too much money. DSE managed to convince Zuffa to buy a company that was on its knees and had no real value. They bought a tape library which wasnt even complete as Fuji TV owned the rights to much of the library and they bought fighter contracts again which were not water tight. Whoever did the due diligiance really fcuked up as Pride wasnt worth buying. Zuffa originally talked about keeping Pride as seperate company and running shows in Japan but I knew that was BS as the Japanese wouldnt accept there #1 fight promotion being taken over by some gajins. Not to mention Zuffa would of had to deal with the Yakuza to run shows in Japan. I think Zuffa soon realised that the amount of money you can lose in Japan running shows is huge and it wasnt feasible to keep Pride running as a seperate promotion.
The articles linked below give you an understanding if what happened and why it went wrong.

zuffa never really has been able to come close to was dse did, despite their unbelievable monetary successes. I guess that's what happens when an organization is made up of uncreative do-nothings.

The good thing about Pride is that they always had the best fighter in the world at one time or another.
They had Rickson in the early days, Sakuraba tore thru everyone and then Fedor the best ever.
