Just got word from one of the guys at Boxing News (UK) that my article on a Scottish fighter called Gary McArthur will be in the magazine on Friday! I'm not sure how it will look or what but I don't care. Published in the Boxing News, holy shit. My other article on another Scottish fighter Ryan Brawley will be on their website tomorrow.

I've alrady been in print (March) after I interviewed Alex Arthur for The Scotsman newspaper as part of the build-up to Gomez v Burns.

But published in a proper Boxing magazine. Stunned.

Hopefully the severe case of having no self-belief will start to vanish now.

Happy days :happy

I got a degree in journalism and law in 2001. I went a bit off the rails when my dad died and I've only been back at the writing since the summer of last year. I started writing for this site and f i g h t b e a t. I've did some freelance sports work for local rags too. My boxing background is simple: Trained at a gym for a while but have been watching, researching and studying the game for the last twenty years. I'm 29 now and I'm having a go. Even if I'm not the next Schulberg, Borges, Farhood or Bunce I'm enjoying the experience. I've met and interviewed Alex Arthur for The Scotsman, interviewed Junior Witter, a couple of guys from the last Prizefighter series, Bruce Scott from the next Prizefighter series and I'm in the process of trying to arrange several other interviews for features.

A guy who writes for Boxing Monthly told me that around ten or so boxing writer in the UK get paid for doing it so it's a tough nut to crack. But if you put in the hard graft, write copy for free, get press passes, build up your contacts and get published as often as you can then you never know.

If you decide to follow your dream then I really hope things work out for you. If I can help with anything else feel free to pm me.

I've done a bit of writing for the Boxing News website and I'm regularly in touch with one of the guys at the magazine. So I barraged him with work and didn't give up. I've got the reward for it now. Hopefully this is just the beginning.

Interviewing Lee Mcallister on Monday and Martin Lindsay next Wednesday.

Hopeful of getting an interview with Carl Thompson.

It's out of order that a magazine as well-established as Boxing News exploit their writers' love of the sport and don't pay for stories like this. They've gone down severely in my estimation.

well established yes, but how much money do you think BN makes?
Correct, next to nothing.

I've been asked to rectify this non-payment issue. I only put this thread up because of how ecstatic I was. If I want paid then all I have to do is invoice them for it. They don't appreciate the fact that people think they might be exploiting me.

So on behalf of BN they are not exploiting me and I can get paid if I wish but to be frank I'm not wanting to.

Fair enough, but if they are willing to pay you then why would you not take the money? I don't mean to be difficult, I just don't understand.

I think he wants to build up a CV, and it is much quicker to do when your not asking to be paid, because more people will be willing to publish his articles.

What Kosaros said. I'm not in it for the money....at the moment. I'll only be doing in it for money when my cv and work is reputable enough in my opinion. I'm just happy to be getting my name out there. It's only my second article published so I just want to keep going.

I hope I don't sound like the big bad ogre, but if BN or any other outlet think your stories are good enough - and this one is, no question - they'll pay for them. Journalism is a job like any other; you do the work and get paid for it.

Again, I have to say that BN would pay me. All I need to do is send them an invoice. As a freelance that's how it works. For me to get paid I would send them an invoice. Listen mate, I know your intentions are probably good but I'm getting into trouble because of it. BN are no exploiting me, they would pay me - but as I've stated I'm not wanting paid. I have done work for the bn website, a bit more expansive. Have been asked to write for a boxing site in the states so that's cool. I was recommended. They want someone to write about the uk/euro scene so it gets noticed a bit more.

Did a report on the Huck v Rusal fight to start with.

I could be a whole lot more of a big bad ogre in this thread by saying that Boxing News is a fuckin rag, with a bunch of joke writers. I fuckin hate it. Full of biased pricks, who dont know shit. I often laugh at how pathetic a magazine its became in the last 10 years.

If that what you want, fair enough, but I can't see why you would want to turn money down. I know how hard it is to get commissions.

Off the subject slightly, if you're not an NUJ member already, think seriously about joining for the benefits it brings.

A former BN writer was on another forum a week or so ago slagging BN off for (among other things) getting rid of experienced, more expensive writers and hiring newbies on peanuts, so parts of this thread have probably gone down like a lead balloon!

Acting like a tit? ACTING LIKE A TIT?

What did I say there that 'titlike' that I dont like a magazine that has jock haters writing for 'em? specifically a Glaswegian hater who always takes my people down. & he is young enough to not be taken seriously. A boxing magazine should be full of older experienced men, not full of teenagers & internet writers. I expect more from official magazines than reading forum guys who work for next to nothing.
Fuxake Zico, you should realise that I never act like a 'tit' here, I can always back up my arguments. You think if I just came in & threw abuse about without backing it up I would still be here? Think about it before you open your big mouth next time.

I would ask you to take it back, but this place is getting too good for its own good, & respected posters like myself keep on having to answer to noobs all the time who dont do their homework, & its fuckin tiring to be honest.
Why didnt you just ask me WHY I didnt like Boxing News instead of hurling insults at me? The forum is about debate, its not rocket science you know, read the instructions on a pot noodle & it will offer you the same advice...

In fact, you will probably be writing for Boxing News the next time I check this thread...

Listen man. I only came on here to tell of my happiness. I wish I fucking hadn't. Just incase anyone is interested I'm not some dumb fucking internet writer. I graduated in journalism and law in 2001, my Dad died and I hit the wall big-time. Only been writing again since last summer and started writing on here. Have since been published in The Scotsman

I'm from Glasgow and live in the Borders now. I'm 30 in October.

And it'll be the last time I work for nothing I can assure you. A guy at the BN who's been a brilliant source of advice for me actually advised me to take the payment, I just wanted my name in print.
