Rugby league legend Andrew Johns has been arrested for possession of an ecstasy tablet in London.
Police stopped the 33-year-old former Australian Test captain at Kings Cross underground station on Sunday afternoon.
The rugby great had been partying at The Church, an all-day club at Kentish Town that is popular with Australian expats and tourists, and claimed an "unknown person" had pushed the pill into his jeans.
"I was having such a good time, seeing it was the last day before I flew home," he said.
"I stupidly forgot about the tablet and instead of getting rid of it, I left myself in a situation I soon deeply regretted.
"I have been a very foolish person and realise I have brought great disappointment to my family, friends and many people, including lots of youngsters who have looked up to me over the years.
"It has left a black mark on my reputation which I will work very hard at erasing". He was not charged over the incident and is free to return to Australia, but if he is ever caught in another similar situation he could face court.
Johns was searched as part of a British Transport Police operation in the London underground to catch drug users travelling to the Notting Hill Carnival.
The former footy star was one of 206 people arrested for drugs possession in London over the British holiday weekend.
Police confirmed last night that "an Australian man in his 30s was arrested and cautioned for possession of an ecstasy tablet".
Johns had been holidaying in Britain, and had spent the previous week attending the Challenge Cup final at Wembley stadium and coaching the rugby union club Harlequins.

Why not if he is using drugs this should really damage his name and i can't wait to see how the people of NSW take this on or they just cover it up. If he is using Drugs then all this hate on guys like Wayne Carey and Anthony Mundine are no where near the level of a drug user and i never thought it would be Andrew johns
Good work Joey. Get loose. Seriously its not even a big deal. Every c*nt and his dog has done pills these days. Its almost as bad as getting caught with a 50 bag of weed. Yes its illegal but to be honest its not really a massive issue. It certainly doesn't cost the health system big dollars when compared to smoking and alcohol. In fact qutie the opposite. [Only registered and activated users can see links] ---- Read up on it for yourself. Probably the main reason its illegal is because of the fact it would be considered a gateway drug to some of the harder amphetemines like crystal meth, and the fact that it MUST be cut with some other substance to be compressed into tablet form. However, that said, these are tested very reguarly and whilst usually based with small amounts of another substance (speed, coke,K ect) most times are simply cut with small amounts of caffenie or other similar substances that give a small buzz.

I feel you mate. On a side note Joeys story has more holes then swiss cheese.

Its hardly like he was caught with a needle sticking out of his arm. My best mate got on an 8 ball of charlie for the whole Melbourne Storm one time when they were in Brissie. That Daddoe guy from the great out doors was out one night at the mono (nightclub) and started telling us about how he was all coked up as well. Pretty much every time we see celebrities or sports people out they are always on the gear. Its so widespread its not funny. I think they are making a mountain out of a molehill here.

i have been out in Newcastle plenty of times and seen him quite obviously peaking off his head - ask anyone who is a regular at the Newie clubs and they will tell you the same thing
he is retired - gotta spend his money somehow! :)

It shouldn't even be a grade a substance. It doesn't cost the health system. It almost never kills people. You have more chance of being struck by lightning. AND ITS THEIR F*CKING CHOICE. Its not physically addictive in the slightest. If he wants to do it who cares, let him, big deal I say. Is it any worse then getting plastered. IMO its better. Less violence and far less stupidity. Every incedent that has arisen with footballers has come from the aftermath of far too much alcohol.

Yeah, I agree, it shouldn't be a big deal, but unfortunately, he was caught with illegal drugs, and now the press will have a field day, because he is apparently a 'role model'
I've heard stories going back years about Joey and his coke habit, and being passed out in his car up in Newcastle after big nights on the piss when he was going through his divorce.
In fact, a little bird told me back when Wendell was done for okie, that along with Lockyer and Johns, he was the biggest cokehead in the NRL.
Funnily enough, I read an article by Wendy when he got busted, and he said in the days after the bust, when he turned to his family and friends for support, the first thing he did was have dinner at Darren Lockyers house, and Joey was there

I cant believe this Ben Cousins was hanged for using ice (as rumored) but every is defending Joey Johns (if he is taking it that is) If his story is true which i find funny and hard to believe but is possible but if he is lying that even adds more to the fact he has let his fans down.
I dont care who or what you are but drugs is just a sign of TOTAL WEAKNESS and i respect no man or woman who does it because they are weak. Any man that has to take drugs to make himself better is no man plain and simple.
People trying to prove What to other people? In this case and many big name stars it all comes down to the fan breaking them down piece by piece and the weight of the world on their shoulders and maybe just maybe if this is all true Johns couldn't handle it as the same with Ben Cousins.
Many know i don't agree with Mundine alot but i totally agree with his idea of no drinking and no drugs i mean why poison your body when you can perfect it with training. Having a drink now and again is fine but why destory your body with get wasted and drugs when you can only make yourself stronger each day with training. When your paied to do that there should be no limits to being perfect and drinking and drugs should be banned simple as that.

First off Ice is a MUCH harder drug then Ecstasy. Secondly your entitled to your opinion thats fine, but its different to push your views onto others. Why should being an athlete mean having to live like a preist. They should be allowed some room to move. You act as if he was on some massive binge which is total rubbish. Its always the attitude of the anti drug crowd. Make it out to be totally evil. Sorry to break it to you but it is RAMPANT. I heard stats that 85% of people aged 18-22 had tried ecstasy once, and I wouldn't doubt it for a second. Australia are the biggest users of ecstasy per population on the planet according to recent studies. Its hardly like he is part of a small minority of "drugos" trying to poison society. Having a big night once a week doesn't hurt anyone. They are just people, looking to have some fun with their mates like everyone else.

The total weakness crap is the most self righteous shit i have heard in a while. How does it make him or anyone else for that matter less of a man? What a joke. Why don't you go ask Katsidis about drugs mate. From what I have heard from multiple sources he is no stranger in that regard. Does that make him any less of a man?

Come on guys hes at an all day club I know these day clubs go off after you have been out all night and still peaking or looking to peak so places like this is where you go to do that shit.
And denying that he did not own the pill after leaving a place like that is ridiculous any other person other then a celeb would be hung for it and no one would ever beleive what he has said and truth be told I dont beleive him.
But I should not complain have dabbled with the shit in the past myself.

Na i dont drink or smoke but like i have no problem with people who do I just do dont get when people are pushed into it or start to try and fit into a group. I am also not a man of faith so i do dont it for what i believe in or anything like that either it's just a choice i made so i can train harder and longer then people who would drink and smoke alot.
But with Drugs it is like a area i hate and feel it is a huge weakness in ones charecter and now i can judge Johns because i dont know if the story is fully true or what but when it comes to drugs i just feel anyone who takes them and needs them is weak.
Now i understand people who are depressed use some kind of drugs and aslong as they are legal thats fine but when it comes to fixing ones self with a drug from the streets i just cant understand that i really dont. I get high on training blood sweet and tears and that is deadset serious and the harder i push the better I feel and with this AFL,NRL soccer boxing whatever stars do this i just wonder how great they really could be without it.

BULLSHIT drugs are for the weak and weak minded simple as that, You take illegal drugs you are not worth a second or a heartbeat of my or anyone elses time.
if Katsidis was on drugs does it make him less of a man, answer YES. A man who does drugs is no man simple as that and when it comes to drugs and sport they are not only cheats they are cowards. Now if they come back from that and get clean thats a sign of strength but even trying it is a sign of weakness.
Now i dont care if you do drugs or use i dont care thats your life to waste so i dont push my views on others but i get MANY push theres onto me about NOT BEING A TRUE AUSSIE because i dont drink. As i said before i dont do it out of faith i do it out of choice in order to train harder and longer i dont risk hurting my mind or body with stuff that is bad for you.
People can do what they want BUT my point to the whole thing is simple Johns is a role model right? Kids are stupid today right? they want to be like their stars and fact is people will blame Johns that their kids do drugs and blah blah blah THE REAL PROBLEM is the foks that dont smash their kids for starting it in the first place.......They just look to blame the Celebs who do it rather then break their kids in 2 for using it.
Now if you want to do drugs go ahead but i rather keep my mind and body focused on it's goal and many dont like to train or workout and thats a problem in this world today. We are all fat lazy slobs and looking for something to blame and the only person is the one we look at when we go to the mirror each morining.

Your point of view stinks of immaturity. You have a very naieve view of the world. If i could relate it to something, it would be like saying the best cure for unplanned pregnancies is abstenance. Both statements are equally flawed. Its not evil. People dont do it because they are weak. They don't rely on the drug in any way when talking ecstasy and lower level sorts. They just do it for a good time on the odd occasion for the most part. You make it sound so sinister. Do some research. Look at the link i provided. Don't listen to all the people who say what it could 'potentially do" either. look at the actual proven effects. You will be very suprised. I find it funny that when people like yourself have very high moral standards, that they love to look down their nose at other people. I don't look down at people like yourself who don't drink or take drugs. Personally it doesn't really change my opinion of someone what so ever. If that is the sort of thing that governs your opinion on someone then you are living a pretty shallow life.

Joey is a dimwit, and this wouldnt be the first time he has done this sort of thing, but all these rumours that get around Newcastle are a laugh. I've seen him out on the town with to much juice in him, but to speculate about other substances is trashy rumour.

I played with the penrith panthers from 2002-2005 in the juniors and i know for a fact atleast half of everyteam gets on some kind of drugs.
I played in England lastyear and told me and 2 teammates had a bender after a big win which led to a few pills falling in my pocket(lol)..
Drugtesters came to training the next week and my name got called. The coaching staff said i werent there to cover me .
Drugs is a bigger problem then you think in sports.
When i was at the panthers i used to see some of my teammates down 50pills between them in a night.

When i was at the panthers i used to see some of my teammates down 50pills between them in a night.
Go hard johnsy you goose..
Interesting story. I know full well about the footy players and there habbits. They are all on it, along with every other Tom, Dick and Harry.
Most people are pretty responsible on it. Like all things, it can be abused. Same as alcohol, gambling and tonnes of other things in life.

mmm, droping some pill manufactured god knows where is no worse than drinking a few beers. OK, you sound like you have dropped a few too many and you may be getting into the wacky spaced out MSTR catagory. Like, wow, maaan...expand your mind man!!!
I think you both need to talk to a doctor about the harm ecstacy can and usually does do...and before you go on about the harmful affects of alcohol I know. I've shared this board with Ozstriker for a year know. The odd beer wont hurt you, alcoholism will. Eccy might kill you in one hit.
But in all seriousness keep it up. Australia is over crowded as it is.

Your just proving your ignorance. Go into the link at the start of the thread that I posted and ACTUALLY read about it. I did one better and actually went and read a couple books about it.
Then come back to me. The chances of it killing you in one hit are less then the chance of being eaten alive by a shark.
No one is claiming it is really good for you. But look at the adverse effects of binge drinking and smoking in comparison
As for your comments at the start, it doesn't make you TRIP out or hallucinate.
As for who makes it, people test them reguarly. In fact site like pillreport.com and others actually give detailed analysis on the contents. Regardless, if you get on it 5 times a week your a hopless c*nt and deserve whats coming to you.
if you have a couple maybe once a month the effects are almost completely non existent. No one is saying go out and start a massive habbit like you are making out. You have completely exaggerated here. It is SOOOO common place EelsRule I can't describe. Being 21 and the fact that I go to pubs and clubs regularly I see just how many people are on it. Most nights I would see as many people taking it as drinking. Do you really think that most of Australia is out to kill themselves, or that maybe its not as bad as you have been lead to believe?
In the end, why do you care. Why does that change your opinion on someone for? Are you that judgemental?

Anyone watching the Footy Show?
FAAAAAAARRRRRRRKKKKKKKK!!!!!!
I didn't expect this! He's sticking to his 'unknown person' story, but then he said that he knew what it was, and was intending to take it. Gus Gould interrupted him at that point and requestioned him about this 'unknown person' and Joey just said it again, and said that it's happened before, when someone he doesn't know has come up and just given him an E.
So Gus asked him if he knew what it was when he was given it, he said yes, so Gus said that would suggest it wasn't the first time, and Joey said it wasn't, and then he admitted to taking E's for the last 10-12 years, during the season, during the off-season, that sometimes playing in the big games he was thinking about the final whistle so he could go and neck a pill.
He's been very candid about it, but the one thing that I'm not liking is that he's hinted that depression is his reason for taking E's, and now, after the adbreak, he's focusing on it even more, which is making it sound like an excuse.

That's sort of a normal human reaction though, saying something like that to yourself so you think the best of yourself in the circumstances and try to draw sympathy from others.

Yeah, and unfortunately, that's the path they ended up taking - making out that Joey's been struggling in life for the last 10-12 years, suffering depression and ups and downs, etc. and that he's never going to take drugs again, and that he wants to use his experience and position to educate people about the evils of drugs.
Then they had testimonials from his brother and Paul Harragon, and Harragon just said a heap of corny shit, ending with "now he's free" as if he's been tortured all these years by his drugtaking.
Joey kept saying "I've been so ashamed of my drugtaking" as if he's been in pain all these years - I don't buy that, he's just like any other young bloke out looking for a good time, so part 2 was obviously all about damage control.
Still, it was certainly a different approach to this sort of thing.

Best thing he could have done was just come totally clean otherwise people would have just duck it all up in time. People still should judge him as a Player and as a Person and as a player he was great but too bad the preasure of fame got to him as it has with all young champs.
Tyson, Carey, Ablett, Cousins and now Johns all became powerful at a young age.

Now see man, this interview was aimed at convincing people like yourself, who aren't really on touch with the drug culture, that Joey's been taking drugs all these years due to the pressure of footy and depression.
While I respect him infinitely for coming out and admitting to having been taking drugs for so long, I totally disbelieve all that crap he said about the suffering he's experienced and how that drove him to taking drugs.
It's kind of funny that you, with your hardline stance on drugs, now respect Johns for coming out and admitting his 'addiction'. That's a pure sympathy tactic. Do you think if he hadn't been arrested he'd be all down and ashamed like he was portraying tonight?
Anyone who has been a recreational E user knows EXACTLY what Joey was doing when he's been popping pills all these years - looking for a good time, not trying to escape reality or depression.

na na na dont get me wrong he used drugs and was weak for that but he could have just bullshited and said some like "Yeah i was just going to take that but i have never done it in my past"
Most would have said that but least he has the balls to take it on the chin and thats what i respect about him. For doing it in the first place it shows a sign of weakness but when somone is young and promised the world i bet most would crumble like he did and that is no excuse but when offered the world at a young age it is easy to suck someone in.

I'll tell ya what the problem is now right is that all these good doers out there like Mums and dads will be blasting Johns saying He is a bad role model for kids and all this crap and they will take drugs because of him.
Well if i ever had a kid who took drugs because of a celeb doing it i would kick my own arse first for being a bad father rather then just blame the celeb. THATS THE PROBLEM WITH THE WORLD TODAY weak parents who haven't got the guts to backhand a kid for doing the wrong thing in todays world.
They always want to rage a war on someone else and not take it up with the kids anymore, Always the celebs fault and not the youth Well thats bullcrap. Play violent games, Blood and gore movies this will make you evil BULLSHIT
I'll say this i was raised and taken to movies such as Terminator 2 when i was 5, Robocop 2 and Total Recall and played gory games since i could use my hands but my foks always rasied me and made things clear that things such as Celebs and drugs doesn't give me the damn right to copy them and that i must become my own man and not try and be someone i am not.
Drugs in sport is bad but mums and dads are F&*king morons if they think this is the reason kids take up using drugs. How about they take some of the blame rather then push it onto guys like Johns and other celebs

Good post. Its fucking bullshit. I am actually annoyed he has handled it this way. It isn't a big deal, and he could have played it down. Instead he has acted like a hopeless addict. Rubbish. E isn't physically addictive, and he didn't take it because he was depressed. And now all the fools who know nothing about it are acting like he is "cured". Garbage.

Exactly - he started off well, but then lost me when he started saying "I've been so ashamed of my addiction to drugs" total bullshit, he's just playing that card to evoke sympathy and, as you say, to make people who have no idea about the drug believe that he was 'addicted' and is now clean.

Yeah of course but least he had the guts to come out and come clean he cover up anything like 99% of them would have. fame and power mate at a young age kills any champion and i dont care who you are when you young and are promised the world and you dont have anyone to watch over you then all hell can fall upon you.
This just shows even the best are human but saying he made a mistake is crap he made MANY for 10 years. So this isn't a mistake it was a way of life and thats the problem in that interview is they are acting like it was just a mistake but a mistake is bumping into someone on the street not taking drugs for 10 years

Seriously mate, you are voicing a lot of opinions here that you obviously know very little about, and to be perfectly honest it makes you sound pretty silly. GO READ ABOUT IT FIRST. Some non biased research as well. Wikipedia is good because it is a collaberation of research, not just rubbish trying to push the anti drugs message. Books or articles by independant researchers are great because they don't have a hidden agenda usually. merely to present the actual facts. This whole thing is a farce. Joey did it because he wanted to get loose and have a good time. No other reason. The reason he is now shooting for the sympathy vote is because otherwise the media would make an example out of him by practically crucifying the poor bloke over something that really is a VERY MINOR OFFENCE.
So we all agree Andrew Johns is a cockhead who probably cheated his way to the 97 grandfinal victory?

That's right, the interview and confession was all about damage control - shock everybody straight up by admitting using it for so long, then throw in mention of his apparent medical condition, and pressures of life, and let the public join the dots and feel sorry for him. Throw in a couple of emotional testimonials from his brother and ex-team mate and you've convinced the majority of viewers he was really struggling with an addiction and has now faced up to it and will change his ways.
I just saw it on the news and they were interviewing Newcastle fans and they're all talking about him as a hero for admitting his mistakes and facing up to it on national TV.
Very clever PR.

And before you go on with any more of your "most of Australia" logic drink some water (but not too much) come back to reality and realise that it is simply the party drug crowd you hang with. Not "most of Australia".

yeh the truth is that most of australia is on that legal drug called alcohol which is the dirtiest most destructive drug out there, and dickhead the "reality" is that the majority of people who choose to take "party drugs" do it knowing the risks and take care when doing it, and when it comes to ecstacy you will find that a doctor can not give u a definite response when it comes to the side effects and long term effects because every pill is different and if you are smart and actually want to take care of your self the best bet is wikipedia and other objective sources rather than a doctor who will just spew negative crap about holes forming in your brain etc.
i took "party drugs" in moderation for 7 years and i had some of the best experiences ever, met some good friends and finished my degree in the middle of it all, and the best part was that after having my first pill, i never set foot in to a pub/bar or alcohol fueled environment ever since.
If Joey was playing like he was partially under the influence of ecstacy.. playing the best football in the world i hope the dragons take notice, score some good pills, win a few more games next year and.. reach for the lasers. haha
