Willie Limond to fight for 'world' title

Scotland’s Willie Limond will face English champion Ryan Barrett for the vacant WBU lightweight title on May 29 at Glasgow’s Thistle Hotel.

Barrett, 17-5-2 (4 KOs), was the original opponent of the bout before pricing himself out and Lee Cook was drafted in. Since then Cook has pulled out of the fight and the original front-runner, Barrett, is back.

Barrett’s southpaw stance has meant Limond, 31-2 (8 KOs), has had to change his training regime to prepare for the bout.

Limond has been sparring with Ryan Brawley, winner of the Prizefighter Lightweight series, and Lanarkshire’s Commonwealth champion Ricky Burns who has sparred with Limond as a southpaw in preparation for the awkward Barrett.

Barrett and Limond both have a common opponent in Amir Khan and it is fair to say Limond, who knocked Khan down before retiring himself in the eighth round, performed better than Barrett’s first round defeat.

If the 30-year-old Limond wins the title, manager Alex Morrison plans to hold the first defence at Partick Thistle’s Firhill Stadium in an open air bout.

I don't buy the bollocks that it being a title fight sells more. Get back to the good old days of British scraps and people will turn up to see a good domesitc fight. Chris and Grievsy, you must of not seen the big thread on Limmond fighting the the WBU from a few months back. Everyone on this forum was slagging of the WBU and then Willie came on himself to defend his decision to fight for it.

Everyone begun ass licking Limmond saying "well done willie youve gotta make a living" and "you totally beat khan" bullshit. I was the only one that told willie straight up fighting for the wbu was was a load of crap. we argued back and forth for a couple of days and not one person on this forum backed me up until Dunky came in and agreed with me. The Commonwealth Ligthweight belt is vacant now Khan has given it up. I don't know how the CBB work it, but I'd imagine Willie could easily get a shot at it?

And as has been shown plenty of times before, recently with Broadhurst and Barker (providing he beats McDermott) is that having the Commonwealth belt leads you to the British title.

And will the public honestly be fooled by "world title" nonsense? Forget the big shows that the likes of Calzaghe, Khan and Hatton etc. had, a relatively small show like this would really only attract Boxing fans, not the casual group. And the majority of Boxing fans know that WBU is worthless and not one of the four or five actual world titles. Obviously there will be people there cheering for Willie and all the boxers, but the kind of people who go to these typical small hall shows know that the WBU isn't a world title.

So the promoters may charge that bit more for a "world title" fight, but I can't see it attracting many more fans than a good, honest scrap for a vacant Commonwealth title-or even a British title eliminator.

I have never denied that there was a long count. Willie could of done allot more to get a re-match with Khan. All we ever saw was one interview with him about the quote, he should of done a David Haye and not shut up, embarressed Khan onto a re-match.

In fairness Willie was all for goign over to amrica to beat Dimitry Salita,only for Salita's people (john wirt i thnk) to muck him about and give over stupid demands...so its not always as easy to set up as ppl think.
