View Full Version : Martin Gethin lost a 4 rounder yesterday!
MARTIN Gethin’s shock defeat at Pat Cowdell’s dinner show last night at the Birmingham Holiday Inn caused anger at the ringside.
Referee Shaun Messer awarded the decision to Chris Long, from Calne in Wiltshire, 39-38 and that came as a massive surprise to Gethin’s coach Errol Johnson.
Normally a placid laid-back expert Johnson stormed: “That result was never right. Gethin didn’t box well but he certainly didn’t lose the fight.
“The referee got it all wrong. He totally misread the fight and it is an expensive mistake.
‘‘He gave Gethin a mandatory count of eight in the last round but Gethin went down from a slip rather than a punch. It should not have been a count.
“I had Gethin lined up for a shot at the Commonwealth title but the referee’s mistakes have knocked that on the head. I am protesting to the Board of Control officials,” he growled.

A right shock of a result that one, although from that piece it looks controversial. Was meant to to to the show but couldnt so onl;y have second hand info. Gethin does start slow though and being only a 4 rounder that couldve cost him. Gutted if its cost him that Commonwealth title chance.

Why on earth was he fighting a four rounder. He starts slow as you said that's the costly mistake right there.
I like Gethin and i'm gutted about this his career was going well up until the Lawton loss and he needed a win in a match like this but over 6-8 rounds not four rounds he's not a novice. Hope he gets in ring asap and get a win under his belt again.
Didnt see this coming at all

If a journeyman gets the decision over a prospect, it must be right.
How often have we seen prospects given shockingly bad draws and 58-57 wins when they clearly lost?
Good on the ref IMO.

Apparently he looked poor but still should have won. Errol Johnson rarely moans about decisions and gets on with it, also apparently all the journo's at ringside (definitely Whittle from Boxing News, some bloke from BRMB and someone from the Evening Mail) had Gethin the winner.
I agree Mandanda bit puzzled why they didn't make it for 6 rounds.
Chris Long is one of the best "journeymen" fighters I've seen, he's come round this way to fight some of our local lads a lot (in fact 5 of his last 6 fights have been against west mids fighters) and has always impressed me, he got a draw with Rob Hunt the other week on the Broadhurst commonwealth friday fight night and also lost to Scott Evans in Wolverhampton in a british masters fight which I thought he won.

Gethin is pants to be honest. Not pants as in shouldn't be fighting but pants as in no where near top domestic class. How he beat Fewkes is beyond me. beating a shitty pretender like Nadeem Siddique is hardly impressive. Siddique is garbage.
Gethin looks a strong area level fighter nothing more.

Rumour was that Fewkes likes the odd tipple and had struggled with the scales as well.
He beat Craig Watson easily, so was surprised that he lost to Gethin. He lacks power though....
Even if it was the wrong decision, I am glad that a journeyman was awarded the decision for a change. Prospects getting favours from referees has gotten beyond a joke and needs addressing asap.

He's on the ITV4 saturday bill I believe? First fight back since the Gethin loss.
I disagree with you about Gethin I think he's better than he sometimes looks as he's got that sort of plod along pressure style. Lads I know who have sparred him all rate him, I dont think he's British title level (English imo).

Obviously I'm not glad Gethin lost as he's from round here and a good lad but I do agree with you so many shows I get really annoyed when a "journeyman" so clearly deserves the decision but its given the local prospect.

Agreed - Long is no idiot. I was in line with him at the end of the Evans fight and although I thought he'd lost, he was clerly upset if the rude word I saw him mouth was anything to go by.

What is the point of having a fight like this when all it is, is a risk. You can get cut, one punch ko etc
This is why fighters should fight big fights all the time. If they are champs, they will have enough mandatories to give them easier pay days. I don't buy that easier pay day shit. If Vazquez of Marquez wanted a rest after career ending wars then yes but I don't agree with big fights then easier fights. If the fight weren't unbelievably hard - NO REST!
