Hi guys,
I'm just organising a trip to Brisbane in the near future to provide some fitness testing and programs. If there is anyone interested in sending guys in send me a message. I won't drop names on here but we've had some great success so far and will be able to provide names of fighters we've been working with if you want feedback on what we do.

The primary service most fighters are after is the VO2max Treadmill Test, which will give you your specific training heart rate ranges for training. The cost for this is $100.

Ray, question for you please:

Read your recent article in FIST with interest. I don't have it handy or I could quote from it. In essence you were discussing clothing worn during training, and in particular the wearing of heavy clothing (including plastic etc) to enhance sweating. You said that training performance could be effected due to excessive fluid loss and that, after-all, the fluid lost would only be replaced when re-hydrating later anyway.

I'm a bit confused (not that it's hard to achieve).

My basic understanding is that if you burn up more energy than you consume in food you'll lose weight, and if the opposite applies you'll put weight on. Also, that if you eat a 'well balanced' diet and exercise 'appropriately' you'll probably decrease body fat and increase body muscle.

Back to my potentially dumb question Ray:

If the weight we lose in exercise is virtually all in body fluids and will only be replaced when we re-hydrate, why do we bother exercising? I know exercise benefits us in a variety of ways, but am I missing something here regarding body weight in particular.

It's not so much the instant weight you lose that stays off during exercise. You exercise to burn calories, and the weight you lose from that may not be instant. But the majority of weight you lose during a training sessions, especially when wearing sweat suits, is water (ie sweat). So when you drink water following the session you replenish those lost stores.

So the benefit we get from exercising is sometimes 'delayed' ie we might replenish everything we lost in a specific session, but still benefit in the longer term as a result of that session.

Just another (perhaps silly) question if I could Ray:

If a person lives a particular way for many years and suddenly changes lifestyle (better diet + exercise), is there a lag time in the body responding positively due to, for want of a better term 'inertia'?

Does a body that's been 'abused' to the age of let's say 40 initially see radical lifestyle changes as temporary and hence not see any reason to physically change from the shape 40 years have sculpted it into, until it's convinced that the new regime will continue longer term?

Yes the results can often be delayed. The thing is no one can predict how another person will respond to training other saying "If you follow this you will lose weight, increase fitness, etc". We know how much a person should lose if they stick to a certain exercise/meal plan but we cannot accurately predict until we have worked with them.

There may not be a lag time due to inertia, but some people do lose weight slower in the beginning. Others will be constant slow 'losers' (usually due to a medical issue). That said, the larger you are the faster the weight loss comes initially. If the person is not finding this to be the case then I'd be sure they are either eating too much, not exercising regular enough, or not exercising at a high enough intensity.

CouldHaveBeen- No problem. What I can tell you is if you follow a very simple format, you will lose weight!

Tuaman - the best place for work in sport/fitness in Australia is [Only registered and activated users can see links] . I'm actually in NZ next Thursday for a weight loss retreat on Waiheke Island. I'm doing the exercise component for Damien Kristoff from the TV show Downsize Me.
