View Full Version : "Duran vs. Kirkland Laing" from '82...

Folks,
I just finished up with "Duran-Laing" from '82..... Duran was 155 pounds, while Laing was a slim 149 pounds......... Duran did NOT look grossly outta shape, but he was sluggish after round 3...... I suppose Laing deserved the win over 10 rds......... Duran was more so surprised in Laing's spryness and ability, rather than his power....
:patsch:|:twisted::shock:
Just two months later, on the "Walk-Out" card of "Pryor-Arguello 1" down in Florida, Roberto Duran won a decision over Jimmy Batten, to set-up a 1983 bout with Pipino Cuevas in Los Angeles....... This was the true beginning of the 'Duran' comeback................ Peace......

Interesting point.
Contrary to what you'd expect, Duran was actually the bigger guy in that fight.

I was disappointed Duran lost to Benitez, that would have been a real good fight pre `no mas.`
I know this is a Duran/Laing thread but no doubt Duran is better than Laing & he lost to another elite in Benitez around the same time, it just reminded me of that Benitez fight.

In terms of weight, yes, but in the physical attribute department, Duran was naturally smaller than Laing......... Laing appeared to be bigger than Duran in the ring...... Duran just had some added steaks and beers in his girth and thigh zone.......... Laing was in-shape........

I get SO PISSED when I review the facts / hoopla surrounding that '82 fight on HBO........... Duran had to lose 38 pounds in order to make weight against Wilfred Benitez.... Duran was strong and game for 5 or 6 rds, but then he tired and fell behind on the scores... Wilfred Benitez was bigger and more solid at 154 in 1982 than Duran was........ Ironically, that was Benitez' last great fight......... Poor Benitez went straight to hell after beating Duran on a decision over 15 rds on HBO.............
:deal
Contrary to many reports, Duran was NOT embarrassed by Benitez in 1982.... It was a good fight that was tactical...... Benitez won by a few points / rds, but Duran was game....... Cheers.....:bbb

They don't make fighters / fights like they used to for me.......... During my heyday in the early to middle 1980s, I used to get all worked-up over some of the big fights that were made back then.... WHY? Because all my favorite fighters were still active and kickin' ass............. Dudes like: "Holmes, Leonard, Duran, Spinks, Hagler, Pryor, Arguello, Camacho, Chacon, Sanchez, Curry, Foreman, McCallum, Hearns, Mancini & Haugen" were my guys I liked seeing fight.....:yep
Today, we do have some good guys out there, but they don't motivate me like my original home boys did......... Modern dudes like: "DLH, Toney, K Bros., Pacquiao, Hops, Marquez, Barrera, Morales, Kelley, Dawson, Pavlik, Froch & Tarver" are kool, but it ain't the same as 25 yrs ago........... NOPE! Not even close......

I doubt it. An era where ever Tom, Dick and Pudwill gets a title shot will never be looked back on overly fondly. Packed stadiums with a crackling atmosphere watching British title fights when they meant something will always be more memorable than your average Interim WBO light-middleweight fight.

NO! Myself, like many before me, have gone into a sorta' slump and depression after my main guys all retired / vanished from the scene....

I'm also preparing for the new "Voices" of boxing as well......... It is already in the works.... The networks are slowly but surely shit-canning all the legendary old fart announcers....... Guys like" Clancy, Tim Ryan, Alex Wallau, Ferdie Pacheco & Steve Albert" have already stepped down.... Larry Merchant is on his way out the door......... And Al Albert and Sean O'Grady have drifted off to Palookaville....... I am concerned about the boxing future........

EXACTLY!!! I dealt with the WBC and WBA..... I even dealt with the addition of the IBF in '84........
But this shit like the WAA, IBC, IBO WBU, WBF, WBO, is just too much.....
I also am no longer thrilled about 12 rds. being the limit..... I support the comeback of 15 rounders in MAJOR title fights........
Boxing is NOT a dying sport..... It'll never die....... People love action / violence........ Boxing will survive........... However, it has dipped the last 10 yrs or so......... I clearly see it..........

I just broke-out my disc copy of "Duran-Benitez" from '82..... No, it is not an action-packed bout; its tactical......... Lotsa' posing and feinting went on during the 15 rds.... The heated action was NEVER sustained for any length of time.......
This was Benitez' LAST real great performance....... Duran looked good for the photographers at 152 pounds, but his zip and spryness was non-existant in this fight..... Again, after 6 rds., Duran was sapped but still game..... Peace.....
:deal:bbb:admin
MR.BILL:shock:
Note:
Duran at 152 pounds in 1982 for Benitez looked a lot better than he did at 156 for Nino Gonzalez in the summer of '81......... Duran was bloated / fleshy for Gonzalez....
BUT! I thought Duran looked in good shape for Luigi Minchillo on TV in Sept. of '81 out in Vegas........
Reports from Panama claim that Duran ballooned up to 180 pounds after Duran beat Minchillo...... Duran had to lose weight to fight Benitez..... The hell was Team Duran thinking there???

I despise the alphabet soup as well and i dont really care about titles now i just know whos the best and care about fights and fighters.
as for Mayweather Jr he is one of my favourites i love the guy his style is great and technically he is the best of his time by a long way.
The 12 round limit is bad i like 15 round fights aswell but it is for safety reasons and a boxers health is most important but i would like to see 15 rounders again.
The announcers i agree with the old guys are going but im sure we will get new ones who are as good.

I disagree back......... Boxing is currently being raped harder and deeper than ever before............ Too much horseshit is going to Cable / PPV these days.............. Boxing has ALWAYS been more so a BIDNESS rather than a SPORT! I know that............ But these promoters' today are merly spitting at us in the face and laughing their tails off to the bank........... Not really; it was a pretty lopsided dismantling with Duran doing little more than salvaging the odd consolation round. Duran actually trained on a prison island for this fight and was completely isolated to ensure he didn't fuck up his training rituals. He was under the limit well before fight night.

Duran was 155 and looking pretty okay in 1982 at age 31.... He was heavy up that high, but not slobbish...... I think team Duran under-estimated Kirk Laing...... Duran never knew that Laing had above average speed and good legs in 1982....... PLUS! After Laing shook off the nerves, he implemented "Leonard's" style and boxed Duran to a close, but sure decision on ESPN......

That fight with Benitez has always bothered me... Duran was a good looking 154 for Luigi Minchillo in Sept. 1981 in Vegas.. BUT! Word has it by Nov., Duran was a bloated 180+ pounds and in need of serious training to make weight for Benitez of Jan. 1982...... Duran did make weight for Benitez, he weighed 152 pounds on the scale........ But Duran fought Benitez dreadful and non-energetic after the 6th round onward..... That's a sign he was weight drained.... Even Raymond Leonard at ringside for HBO said Duran appeared sluggish at the midway point or so of the 15 rounder.... Duran was really off key in there with Benitez....... Even with Ray Arcel in the corner, Duran had no charge after round 6....... Why?

Some of the high quality fights I can remember seeing on network TV included Chacon/ Limon, Leonard/Green, Leonard/ Mayweather. Frank the Animal Fletcher vs numerous people, Saad Muhammed, Arguello, Duran, Pryor. I cna still picture Julian Jackson flattening Terry Norris after Dan Dierdorf was prasing Norris's boxing ability.
