Guess this fight could only have happened at Jr MW. Both coming in whilst still in their prime age and in their best form. In one corner, you have Whittaker the smaller but, more gifted (imo) defensive wizard and in the other, the bigger opponent (Wright) with an armour like defense. Ok, who takes it?

Pea would have given Winky fits with his defense and movement. Pea by UD.

As good as Sweet Pea was - I don't think he would have been able to handle Wright, especially if he was appling pressure like he's been doing in his last couple of fights. Winky wins by UD.

You have to land punches to score point - and hitting Winky's arms will get you no points. However - it will get you countered.

Both of these guys were and are good at what they do - so it's hard for me to really pick a winner - but I'm sticking with Wright.

Pretty good fight, but remember that Pea wasn't near his best at 154, and never really fought there. He looked just Ok in winning the title over Vasquez.

I think Wright picks him off and takes a decision.

Whitaker was a much better fighter than Wright. He didnt look oridinary against guys like Fernando Vargas and Bronco McKart.

Once again, this fight is at 154. Wright is a more natural 154 and Whitaker was slower at that weight.

Whitaker wasn't close to being in his prime weight at 154lbs. He'd get absolutely battered.

They had different, but equally effective forms of defense. The purists of the sport tend to favor the Pea's type of defense, as it depends on more agility than Pinky's I guess, but if a style like Pinky's works, then it's hard to argue with it. I guess a third form of defense would be heavy dependence on footwork and good legs.

Wright uses his size en route to an 8-4 UD.

Bullshit, he shut out Vasquez, who dominated Wright. Admittedly it wasn't a prime Wright, but still, to act like Whitaker has no chance just because it wasn't his prime weight is stupid. He still had better defense, way better movement, and an even better jab than Winky. Winky is bigger, that's it. I think Winky gets caught more than Whitaker. Close fight.

:good

Vazquez was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this thread title.

Winky UD12. He's one of the best ever at 154.

Winky wins 7 or 8 rounds.

Winky would be bigger, I still think Whitaker takes it in a close fight.

Wright UD. Too much for Whitaker at 154.

Yep, just like I would be confident backing Camacho against SRL, Berbick against Ali, Archer against SRR, etc.

those guys lost to champions

Winky, UD.

Walks him down with the high guard and outworks him. If Winks can walk Taylor down, he would have no respect for Pea's power, or lack of at 154.

Size is a bad matchup? I don't see what else is bad for him at all?

Once again people, remeber Vasquez dominated Winky and KD'd him 5 times and Whitaker shut Vasquez out at 154. Not a prime Winky that Vasquez beat, but still. Just because he was up 7 pounds from WW doesn't mean he fell off really.

There might be some merit in this but, Vasquez and Whittaker fight differently. It's like saying Wright dominated Trinidad whilst Whittaker lost. Vasquez and Vargas were much bigger fighters who were able to use their size and muscles. I don't think Whittaker has that advantage here. I can see Whittaker hitting arms a lot and Wright hitting air a lot. A bit hard to tell what the outcome would be; both had excellent defense. Wright's defense is effective against speed as we saw in the Mosley fight. I guess in my opinion if Wright were able to bully Whittaker into a fight then he wins otherwise, i'm split.

Pea by decision, i do think it would b a damn good fight. B/c both are defensive geniuses. Tough fight for both rather. But Sweet Pea has the advantage in hand speed, foot speed. And overall skill IMO. I think he would b able to counter winky effectively to a UD. But it would b a close fight and a good one at that.
I pick Sweet Pea UD.

But Pea was at his best when the opposing fighters were trying to apply pressure.

I see Pernell fighting off his jab (which was MUCH better than Winky's....which is saying alot, considering Winky has a hell of a jab), making Wright play the aggressor, countering him all night and making him miss much more than he is used to.

Whitaker UD.

Pea was a better p4p fighter, but Winky at 154 is just too big for Pernell.

Wright is underrated with many people, I think in time people will give him credit with how great a fighter he really was.
