View Full Version : Guide this fighter to a world title....
You 'discover' a young British heavyweight who's 10(3)-0. He's 6"3/4, weighs around 230lbs and is 24 years old.
He hasn't been past 8 rounds and as his record suggests has very little power. However he is a fantastic boxer: brilliant jab, good handspeed, covers up well, can fight on the inside and outside. He also has a decent chin.
So far his record has been built on some decent British journeymen and now you've become his manager. Apart from his lack of power he has every other attribute to become World Heavyweight Champion.
This guy has no promoter (he's fought on small hall shows in the past) so how do you build this guy up? His lack of power means some may perceive him to be boring.
He's been kept at journeyman level for long enough and needs to step up his level of competition.
You talk to Mick Hennessy hoping he will give you a slot on his shows but Mick says the only HW he's interested in atm is Tyson Fury likewise Hayemaker say they've got Price and Haye. No need for another HW.
****** wants your guy to sign a 5 fight deal with him if you want to fight on his shows. You'd have little input on opponents if you do sign with him. Do you sign with Fwank?
The other option is Maloney but he'd also want options (again at least 5 fights) and wouldn't have the financial clout ****** has. However Maloney would allow you greater input over opponents.
You could also go to the States or Germany and base yourself out there or you could promote him yourself in Britain without a TV deal (for the time being) but plenty of £££££.
So what path would you take and what opponents would you want your guy to face? Do you go the Brit -C'wealth -Euro - World route or not? Do you sign with any promoters or not?

Go where the money is (germany) plenty of sparring available against other decent HW's. Sign up for a few fights, get bit of a reputation then come back and dictate terms to the fwanks.
to start off id get him fights with Tomasz Bonin (41-3), Fabio Moli (39-8.) and Gonzalo Omar Basile (41-4). All complete ass but have pretty records, could probably do those with Evans and Waterman at the York Hall and get secondsout.tv to show them. Having done a 3/4 fight deal with Evans & Waterman, by the time that was up a HW prizefighter would probably role around and he'd go in for that. Chisora and Fury would in the British title picture so id put the fighter in for an EU title fight with Pianeta (overrated) to get a CW title fight with Rogan/Sexton you'd have to sign options over to Fwank which is a big mistake. Would likely have to travel to Germany for the Pianeta fight but he gasses late and is easily outboxed.
Then you'd sign with Hayemaker and fight Kali Meehan, Brewster, Bidenko or Ray Austin for an intercontinetal belt on one of Haye's undercards. By this point Haye has beaten both Klits but the belts have been fragmented because of Haye not fighting no-name mandos like Povetkin and Dimitrenko. The belt holders are scared of Haye so HPs focus on getting your guy a titleshot. IBF champ Povetkin is a bit dangerous but Dimitrenko (WBO) and Chagaev (WBA) are the best chance there ever will be. Win the title fight and you can cash your guy out vs Haye or hope that his chin and stamina present some problems for Haye.

me
id take him over to the US get him in the gyms get his name around a bit. Get him in the top american gyms as a sparring partner so he can show what he can do technically his name will start to spread in the States. Then you get him to a big american promoter who will have heard of him from the gym work. Get them on a fight by fight basis dont sign a contract leaves you more options.
First 5 fights with me would be decent journyman and maybe another prospect so you can guage his talent in fights. Obviously his learning will be done in the gyms so these fights arnt important but he has to make some noice so another prospect would be a good way to test him and get his name out and cause an impact.
Next i would get him to base himself out of America so the Americans will get behind him when they see he can fight and that means he has alot of drawing power and can get financial backing easily enough as good heavyweight claiming to be american will be the great US hope. This period is spent on alot of PR like magazine interviews, open workouts etc...
Now heres the tricky part you have to try and keep controll of them here as any move could be disaterous. I would take him over to germany to get the sparring so he will be with higher quality heavy weights. His fights in this time will be ranking fights trying to climb the rankings, trying to stay away from pressure fighters who he would struggle against. Then once he has the mandatory position try and challenge Wlad as he is a boxer and is probably the easiest for a pure boxer as the rest are pressure fighters really.

If he's as good as you say he is throw him in with a British 'name' like Fury.

Hennessy doesn't want to do business with you.

Only trouble is homesickness here folks. Everyone says, "I would take him to america, europe etc" however, fighters from these shores are notorious for getting homesick & returning home. Takeunbeaten heavyweight prospect Ian Millarvie for instance, he had it all on a plate. Went to America, sparred with Monte Barrett etc but got homesick, returned back to these shores & then just lost interest & retired.
Most brit heavies are pretty lazy & dont like being out of their comfort zone, so if they aint gonna settle abroad, what would be your plan B?
Cos in perfect world, all fighters would go abroad & train & spar with the best trainers & get top sparring. The world of the british heavyweight aint a perfect world though...

IMHO you've all picked the wrong option. In this situation there's only 1 real path: Sign with ******. Get the title shot, win the title if you're good and worry about your 'legacy' later.
Truth is ****** can make a millionaire out of a fairly limited fighter.
Look at froch, he'd have been a champion 2 years ago, maybe longer if he'd signed with ******.

Frank also takes money from your pocket which he has no right to, just ask Joe Calzaghe. if my boy was this Ishy heavyweight creation, I wouldnt be so sure about signing on the dotted line for that particular promoter.
Guiding a brit heavy IMO is a lot harder than most think here. Cos when you really think about it, for every answer, there are more questions.

If the extra money he takes is less than the extra money he makes, who cares? At least early on. I don't see Amir Khan sat in his mansion complaining about ******'s cut.
And Calzaghe can moan all he likes, if it wasn't for ****** that 46-0 that he loves so much probably wouldn't exist.
I don't like the fella, but you got to admit if you're negotiating a fight you wouldn't mind him in your corner.

Take him to germany for quality sparring and regular shows, and base him over there
till he gets some hype, kind of how Hide has done since he has started campaining at cruiserweight, once he has got some Hype id probably base him with Maloney until the time is right and then cash him in when he is ready with ******, as ****** is where the money and tv rights are at, plus he will help build his fan base.
As he is a light puncher, id put him in with some glass chinned fighters with padded records like Moli, Tye Fields and Bonin to make his record slightly deceptive, kind of like how they've done with Amir Khan, id also feed some former cruiserweights at him like Bell or Mormeck as they are stepping up to heavyweight, id then put him in with an acid test like a Rahman or Ruiz and then put him in with a Klitschko, Id be tempted to go the british, commonwealth, european route, but Id have to do business with ****** early and wouldnt want him having options until we are ready to deal with him.

I gotta go with ****** too.
Let Fwank make the kid a truck load of cash fighting cherrypicked opponents and after winning one of those awful WBO titles, cash out and go it alone a la Calzaghe/Hatton where he can fight the best and cement a good legacy.
