I have just ordered this fight, never seen it before.
I'm a bit of a fan of Buddy as a fighter. I liked his performance v Sweet Pea first time out especially.
What did you think of this fight? Is it proof that Taylor was an elite-class boxer? Very high quality contest? Or did McGirt just not perform?

From what i remember it was a one sided fight with Taylor dominating the fight with speed, speed and more speed.

It was competitive early on, before Taylor had really hit his stride and begun to overwhelm McGirt with his speed and workrate, which really took its toll on an exhausted McGirt in the later rounds. The fight was stopped without much reason IMO, as there was less than a minute left in the last round and McGirt at the time was just being outworked. He was clearly very tired, but I didn't think he was in too much danger of being hurt.

Dinamita, if you want to see the best of McGirt I'd suggest getting his fights with Frankie ****** (the rematch), Simon Brown and Patrizio Oliva. His fight with Howard Davis too, though it wasn't much of a fight.

As has already been said, it was competitive early on but Meldrick threw on the afterburners and didn't allow McGirt the time to set himself and box effectively.
It was a high quality boxing match for sure, better than anything you could see today imo, and though McGirt complained of being hampered by an inner ear infection, I dont think even the best McGirt could do much against Taylor in that kind of form. He was simply blistering that night. A great boxing display. Taylor still got hit plenty, but he seemed to shrug most of it off, like he was shrugging most of CHavez's punches off.
Buddy tried his best but he couldn't keep up. He seemed throughout his career to have issues with guys that had really high workrates (****** I, Pea II, Leon) and Taylor was undoubtedly a fighter with a high workrate. And plenty of skills and speed to boot.

A very good performance by Meldrick from what I recall, though I haven't seen it in many years.

I think this is THE best of Meldrick Taylor. A great performance against a high level fighter.

Thats how I remember it.
I saw the fight....Meldrick was brilliant..i think that the end was when Buddy was complaining of ear trouble and I think he had a ruptured eardrum.... I was surpised at Taylors dominance after a few rounds and knew he was going to be a star after this fight...

Me too.
Taylor completely outclassed him. He took charge around the 2nd or 3rd round and dominated until the finish. That was a pretty shocking upset, as McGirt was considered a pretty good titlist at the time.

Taylor's best performance(in a win). He put on a clinic, and beat a quality fighter in McGirt in one sided fashion. Buddy was far from a slow fighter, but Taylor made him look like a sloth and just beat him up every round til the last where they stopped it.

Just watching this fight and VERY surprisingly i think i might buy into a bit of McGirt's ear excuse. He loses sharpness very early (looks lethargic really) and his balance seems funky to me at various times.
I hate fighters and their excuses but this one has me thinking.

A very good fight (I can't call it great for some reason)! The first round was extremely competitive, and the 2nd was pretty close as well. From that point on Buddy just does not look like his normal self in here. I like Meldrick (Philly BOY!), and imagine that he had something to with that...But there have been varying reports on the state of mcGirt for this fight...something about an ear infection, or even inner ear problems going into this fight??? Either way this does not look like the Buddy I am used to! I like Meldrick and believe he would have beaten any version of McGirt...but this was not the best McGirt that he beat...Either way still a very nice fight!

I think Taylor's handspeed and workrate was more of a problem for Buddy than any ear infection.
Taylor on that night was something truly special.

I don't necesarilly disagree...But it is still fairly obvious (or at least I thought so!), that McGirt did not look the same from the 3rd round on. It would be unfair to Meldrick (one of my fav's) not to give him some credit for that...But I just believe more than Meldrick's blinding speed affected McGirt here!

Pretty much a one-sided affair which Meldrick dominated, which shocked me because I figured Buddy would make it a war.
