This is an often overlooked fight it was a very good fight.
There was a tactical battle throughout the fight as Gavilan looked to keep his range and out box Basilio from the outside as Basilio tryed bobbing and weaving to get closer to the taller Gavilan. This led to a very intresting tactical battle.
Then there was the battles at the end of the rounds as Gavilan tryed to impress the judges and Basilio stood up to him leading to furius exchanges in the last minutes of rounds. These exchanges were normally up close with Basilio getting hooks into the head and body and Gavilan trying to bring his 'bolo' punches up the middle.
This made an intresting contest which was closely competitive throughtout and a very very close decision. Rounds were give and take and Basilio took over in the middle rounds but Gavilan came on strong in the later rounds when Carmens left eye was shut.
My scorecard looked like this
Gavilan: 1,5,10,11,13,14,15
Basilio:2,3,4,6,7,8,9,12
8-7 Basilio but it was very close.
How did you guys score it?
Whats your thoughts on this classic match up?

SS thinks Gavilan won it?
it was a close fight and there was no way Basilio was going to win a close fight with gavilan he had to win it clearly. I thought he won it and would find it hard to score to gavilan

Yeah, we got into this arugement over who won about a year back, perhaps 2 years back.
I score it for Basilio, and he score it for Gavilan.

That's strange Greg, I thought you as much as anyone would really did Gavilan. I do......such an innovator and an iron chin.matches up great H2H and, IMO, one of the best WW's of all time (top 5 probably)

What does that say about Ray Robinson???? Basilio was crude, but damn effective.

it is weird theres just something could be his mob connections etc... clouding my judgement. dont get me wrong i rate him highly and like his style.

Nah i really like Basilio and hes very underrated he is not crude. He is subtly skilled especially defencivly the way he bobs and weaves and blocks shots with his forearms.

what tahts incorrect Basilio was just damn effective not crude

Gavilan was the true innovator of the shuffle. :good

He didn't invent the bolo punch though.
Here's an early fight of Gavilan's which was after the first Sugar Ray Robinson fight in 1948. Imagine if they had Gavilan's fights against Robinson in this quality:

I remember I felt it could have gone either way by was edging towards Gavilan although when you take the knockdown in account it could go to Basilio. Agreed it is a quality fight I love the way Gavilan throws his combinations.

Exactly the way I felt about it.
One of the closest fights I've ever seen. I thought Gavilan outhustled him down the stretch, and also pulled out the last round, which earned him a razor tight decision on my card.

Notice that Gavilan at this stage in his career was much more of a swarming infighter. In his later championship fights, he was more of a patient boxer/counterpuncher.
