View Full Version : We all talk about chin, but who has the best ever BODY resilience?

Just re-watched Duran v Barkley there, and Duran absorbs some utterly hellacious bodyshots in that fight without so much as wincing! And that's a slightly thick-around-the-middle 37 year old Roberto we're talking about here.

Duran not only doesn't show any immediate effects from taking bodyblows in this one, but he doesn't show any after-effects either. Rather than tire down the stretch on account of Barkley's consistent body barrages, Hands of Stone gets stronger as the fight goes on!

I think it's a pretty damn impressive showing of resilience to bodyshots.

Ever seen a better/comparable one? (I'm expecting Ali to be mentioned at some point, but looking forward to other suggestions...)

Barkley also ate up Hearn's body attack, which broke Schuler apart in one short round. I'm sure the Blade pissed blood after more then one fight.

Ali had maybe the most durable HW body of all time. Quarry made him urinate blood and he just kept goading Chuvalo that entire fight. Frazier and Foreman consistently hit him with bodyshots that don't need to be elaborated on and Norton hit him with one of the hardest bodyshots I've ever seen land on a HW... He was buckled for a moment but didn't go down.

Mercer's body was just as hard as his chin. As I often repeat, Mercer gave an interview where he said Morrison was hitting him to the body so hard he was farting in the ring. Bert Cooper also hit Mercer so hard to the body that Mercer was being knocked off his feet side to side.

Vito Antofurmo was hit by Eugene Hart so hard that he was visibly lifted off his feet. Just like Ali, he had a supremely trained body.

Oh, I remember fairly early in the Mmaby/De Jesus fight De Jesus hits him with his fabled left hook to the body and it sounded like a fucking dull gunshot. Mamby took it in stride.

Hard man, Mamby.

Great stuff Russell, cheers for your input. I may track down those Mercer and Antuofermo fights.

Jeff Chandler against Gaby Canizales was a great display of absorbing brutal bodyshots.

It's been said HEctor Thomspon broke one of Duran's ribs with bodyshots, though i've no idea if this has ever been truly confirmed.

He took a hammering to the body from Jirov and finished with a strong 12.

More of the later fights with Toney's a fat heavyweight and his feet are so stationary and stays on the ropes. His head is still a slippery target but the body is a bigger one. Rahman raked him to the body, and fucked up his kidneys. Toney takes a good shot either upstairs or downstairs. After the first Peter fight I was convinced that Toney's one of the toughest mo-fos to lace em up.

I think Jones did hurt Toney to the body though.

No problem, at all.

Maskaev had great body resistance as well. Courage Tshabalala hit him with some of the hardest bodyshots I've ever seen, breaking multiple ribs. Oleg didn't slow down at all and went on to win the fight.

Glass jaw and an iron body?

Benitez took it from both Palomino and Duran in winning efforts. Jimmy Young took it from Foreman, Norton and Cooney. (Gerry stopped him on a cut, but Jimmy seemed unfazed by the same hook which folded up Lyle.) Through the first several rounds, Tiger Williams absorbed every right hand Shavers delivered to his body, then came on strong late.

Ive read a bit of stuff saying Duran was the one who went to hospital after that fight...could have been for that.
