BARRANQUILLA, Colombia - In what rapidly turned into a dangerous environment for virtually everyone inside the Jumbo Saloon Country Club early Sunday morning, Kendall Holt's championship dream was washed away amid a downpour of beer, soda and water.
Holt was ahead of World Boxing ([Only registered and activated users can see links]***********.com/?m=show&id=10138#) Organization junior welterweight champion Ricardo Torres on two of three scorecards entering the 11th round, but Torres dropped Holt near Holt's corner with a right hand that gave the hometown hero a chance to complete a remarkable comeback. What transpired thereafter, though, is open to interpretation.
As Holt tried to use his legs and held to avoid another powerful punch from Torres (32-1, 28 KOs) in the 11th round, he continuously slipped on what was an extremely slick surface caused by fans hurling innumerable full beer cans and bottles and cans of soda and water into the ring. With flying ice cubes, liquids, plastic and aluminum seemingly endangering the safety of Holt and Torres, referee Genaro Rodriguez, who also appeared to stand directly in harm's way, declined to halt the action so that the surface could be dried and order could be restored around ringside.
The Chicago-based referee instead stopped the fight with a tiring, retreating Holt (22-2, 12 KOs) still on his feet late in the 11th. Holt, his manager/assistant trainer, Henry Cortes, and head trainer Aroz Gist all attempted to protest the stoppage, but Rodriguez dismissed their complaints in the ring, which quickly filled with fans security personnel couldn't stop.
"(Rodriguez) didn't say anything (in the ring)," Holt said. "He said, 'Move. It's over. You were hurt.' "
Their exchange was much more heated in the lobby of the Barranquilla Plaza Hotel once Holt arrived from the nearby arena. While walking past Rodriguez, who was talking with other WBO officials, an emotional Holt screamed obscenities at Rodriguez for actions Holt believes cost him the WBO's 140-pound crown. Rodriguez responded by telling Holt, "F*ck you!," and then moved toward Holt, before bystanders intervened.
Moments earlier, Rodriguez acknowledged near ringside that the slippery surface might've warranted a break in the action.
"It could've been slippery enough," Rodriguez said, "but the action of the fight was more important at that time."
Rolando Marcos-Hermoso, the WBO's rules supervisor for the fight, contradicted Rodriguez moments later, stating that WBO rules require a stoppage when a surface is that slippery.
"That's what the rules state should've happened," Marcos-Hermoso said. "I don't want to step ahead of myself, but I do want to have a conversation with Rodriguez about the situation."
Marcos-Hermoso seemingly dismissed any responsibility for the chaos that unfolded during and after the fight, too.
"At the moment it was happening," Marcos-Hermoso said, "there was a lot of aggression and the crowd was getting crazy and there was a lot of emotions going on. The local authorities never guaranteed protection for the event here."
Colombia's Billie Chams, a respectable man who had conducted a smooth, first-rate promotion prior to fight night, admitted afterward that he was embarrassed by the actions of many of the roughly 1,600 in attendance. "I am not proud of the crowd, just because that never happens here," Chams said. "In this place, the crowd is always perfect. And tonight, I don't like the things that I saw. ... I never expected that to happen because I've promoted (21 previous) world title fights and it never happened."
When the scary scene unfolded early Sunday morning, no one seemed safe.
Darren Antola, Holt's cut man, was hit with a full beer can, which left him with a knot on the back of his head as he prepared to head to the airport for his flight back to New Jersey. Ashema Evans, Holt's girlfriend, suffered a cut on her leg when out-of-control Colombian fans began toppling tables in the VIP section to bum rush the ring, which looked like the ring at Madison Square Garden ([Only registered and activated users can see links]***********.com/?m=show&id=10138#) the night a riot broke out during the Riddick Bowe-Andrew Golota fight in July 1996.
"Could you imagine what would've happened had Kendall knocked this guy out?," Antola asked. "They acted like this and their guy won. We wouldn't have made it out of there alive if he lost."
Even Miami-based welterweight Hicklet Lau, Torres' primary sparring ([Only registered and activated users can see links]***********.com/?m=show&id=10138#) partner for the Holt fight, said, "I was scared, and I wasn't even in there boxing." Torres was more fearful because he thought at least a brief break in the action was inevitable during the eighth round. "I was worried that the referee would've stopped it in the middle of the round, to calm the people down," Torres said through Lau, who interpreted for the champion.
"That would've given time for Kendall Holt to recuperate."
Torres recuperated well after Holt dropped him with a left-right combination in the sixth round, despite that he didn't seem to really regain his legs until the ninth round. His cornermen implored him to pressure Holt because they thought he was down "two or three points" after nine rounds, according to Torres.
Torres was actually only down one point through 10 rounds on the scorecard of Miami's Stuart Winston (95-94), but seven points down on the card of Puerto Rico's Jose Torres (98-91). The third judge, Barranquilla's Manuel Rodriguez, predictably had Torres in front following 10 rounds (95-94).
Had the 11th round ended, however, Holt would've been behind on two of the three cards due to the knockdown he suffered during that three-minute period. Had the 12th round started, Rodriguez (105-102) and Winston (104-103) would've had Torres in front, while Holt would've remained comfortably ahead on Torres' card (106-101).
"I was slipping all over the place," Holt said of the 11th round. "Like I was telling them (before the fight), if I lose, I lose. But don't cheat me. I'm a man and he's man. If he beat me, fine, he beat me. But not like that. ... I got cheated, point blank."
Holt seemingly should've been credited with another knockdown earlier in the bout, as a right hand to Torres' chin forced Torres to use the ropes to prevent him from falling out of the ring. Rodriguez ruled that a slip. Still, Torres is certain that Rodriguez saved Holt from danger by stepping in when he did.
"I thought Kendall Holt was seriously hurt and that the referee did the right job," Torres said. "If it would've continued, he could've been seriously injured."
The night began in much more positive fashion for Holt, who was slightly favored by oddsmakers despite that the champion and one of the judges are from Barranquilla.
Holt was led to ring by a pair of tin instrument-playing, bongo-banging Barranquilla brothers, 12-year-old Reinaldo and 11-year-old Royer Castano, whom the affable boxer befriended while they were making music for money outside the Barranquilla Plaza Hotel, where Holt and his handlers stayed.
Cortes also arranged to play a popular Colombian song, "Amor de Mi Sabana," that temporarily endeared him to the imposing pro-Torres crowd. The 26-year-old fighter from Paterson, New Jersey, also wore multi-cultural gear into the ring, which had the colors of the American flag on the front and the colors of the Colombian flag across the back.
Torres, meanwhile, defended his WBO belt for the second time. The fight was broadcast on free TV throughout Colombia, but it wasn't televised at all in the United States. Chams, Torres' co-promoter along with Top Rank Inc., unsuccessfully tried to sell the American broadcast rights to the fight to DirectTV and Dish Network when neither HBO nor Showtime boxing ([Only registered and activated users can see links]***********.com/?m=show&id=10138#) executives expressed interest in paying a license fee for it.
The 27-year-old Torres earned $135,750 for the bout, as per terms of a WBO-ordered 75-25 purse split for the mandatory match. Holt was paid $45,250, roughly $5,000 less than he earned for defeating Greece's Mike Arnaoutis in an elimination match to secure this title shot on April 20 in Atlantic City. Torres defeated Arnaoutis (17-2-2, 9 KOs) by a widely disputed split decision on Nov. 17 in Las Vegas to win a WBO belt unbeaten
Miguel Cotto ([Only registered and activated users can see links]***********.com/?m=show&id=10138#) (30-0, 25 KOs) relinquished last year to move up to the welterweight division.
Torres, who has only been beaten by Cotto,, made the first defense of his 140-pound crown on April 28 in Barranquilla, where he dominated Mexico's Arturo Morua (24-10-1, 13 KOs) throughout their 12-round fight. His second defense was much more controversial, and could prompt to Holt-led litigation to either force an immediate rematch or have the bizarre bout declared a no contest.
"This is the type of stuff that sucks about the boxing business," Cortes said. "You work so hard, you come here and then you get fucking robbed. It's unfortunate. I just hope the WBO does the right thing. What else can we do?" When asked about a rematch, Torres seemed disinterested.
"I've been in other places and seen worse things happen," Torres said. "But if it happens and there has to be a rematch, and it's the right money, I'll be ready."

After the knockdown of holt that put him up on 2 cards. This is to say if the fight went on past the 11th after they say holt dominated the fight and knocked torres down once the was up by. Point is after the 11th round Holt needed a knockdown to win..:patsch

I'll reserve judgement until I actually see what happened. I recall Holt and his camp saying the Davis stoppage was premature as well. But I also recall how rowdy the crowd was during Valero-Mosquera, throwing bottles and cans into the ring. I'm sure fighting in an atmosphere that hostile can be difficult.

I lived in colombia for 5 months one time, my mother and father were both born there (my mom is from Barrenquilla my dad from Medellin). Anyways, my mom's hometown is Barrenquilla and that is where i spent the majority of the time in. I was there for about 4 out of the 5 months. Let me be the first to say that the country is beatiful but there are parts that are as 3rd world as it can get. And the people there when it comes to sporting events are FUCKING CRAZY. If you stand up at a soccer game to get a drink or go to the bathroom during the middle of the game, people WILL throw bottles, rocks, etc.. at you to get out of the way. Referees get attacked all the time for making calls against the home team. You better believe holt got robbed and I dont even have to see the video to know that. I lived there. Corruption is not even the word that begins to describe that place. If you have money, you can literally kill someone right in front of the police and pay them off to get away with it.

I know it is hard to understand what i am talking about if you live in the states your whole life or some developed country, but trust me I really believe Holt got robbed and I love both fighters and think they both will make some noise regardless of this outcome. But for a $45,000 purse i dont think this was the right move for Holt at all. He prolly could have fought at AC against someone and made twice that. Less risk more reward. For fighting against Torres this could have been a fight made on showtime or HBO all day. I dont really know what Holt's promotoers were thinking honestly.

But it maybe because before the fight happened I just had a bad feeling about it from the getgo. I know how those fans act down there and how corruption is. Just seemed crazy that they would have let the fight continue with bottles and cans going into the ring and hitting cornermen. No wonder they didnt televise it lol! The stoppage was RIDICULOUS!! It wasnt as if Holt failed to beat the count, wasnt coherent, couldnt maintain balance, and he was still throwing. Perhaps's Torres would have finished him, but the ref should allow the action to happen.
I didnt bet this fight and could honestly care who wins as long as it's a straight result. Right is Right:good
The crowd's behaviour was terrible and the ref did a very poor job in the stoppage and waiving off a knockdown.

Nothing shaky about it. Holt was getting his ass kicked in round 10. And was dropped with a wicked left hook that almost sent him flying through the ropes and outside the ring. Its not like Torres just threw 5 punches and the ref stopped it. This was a 2-round ass kicking.

That ending sequence wasnt one that called for that stoppage there:nono
If Torres was so in charge, it would have been the same. Its not the ref's job to make the ASSUMPTION. It's his job to make sure it plays out in a fair manner. HE FAILED MISERABLY ON THAT NIGHT:yep

The first round was a clear slip. The replay from the top proves it. And credit to Torres. I thought he was about to be stopped after both Anaortious and Holt knocked him down. He came back like a true chammpion.
And it wasnt just the final 5 punch flurry that ended the fight. It was the accumilation of punches Holt was taking in rounds 10 and 11.
Thats like only watching the final sequence of Cotto/Judah(after the knockdown) and thinking the ref is an idiot for stopping the fight.

Judah was up against the ropes, this guy was protecting himself, was leaning foward, and wasn't against the ropes. Without seeing the whole fight it's hard to make a conclusive judgement. However, from the clip, it looked like the ref jumped in too soon.

Holt wasnt getting beat with his hands down, he was up, blocking, moving forward, and still throwing, while trying to stay in the fight. A fight HE WAS WINNING. Judah was getting his ass whupped pretty much throughout vs Cotto, certainly more than two rounds.
The referee did Torres a disservice with the premature stoppage!! He has created LEGITIMATE controversey instead of allowing him to cement the result.
Like i said previously, there's many a boxing match that had guy's getting beat worse and they went on. It was a poor job, IMO.
At the very least, a complaint should be filed and it should go to the WBO appeals committee and let them SORT IT OUT!!

No not yet, but the video highlites clearly show an early stoppage. Holt had his hands up, blocking shots, coming forward, and was still throwing. I dont need to see the whole fight to see what I saw there.
Dont give me the Judah crap either, Judah was not ahead on the cards and hadnt been as successful as Holt was before that point. Yes, the highlites showed a wicked left hook that torres knocked him down with, but Holt was up and still trying to fight. he wasnt helpless or incapacitated:nono
Further, they showed highlites of at least one kd for holt another questionable and he was ahead on the scorecards, THEREFORE STILL WINNING THE FIGHT.

-in the short clip of the stoppage Holt was not moving forward, but his hands were up
-based on the scorecards prior to that round and with the knockdown scored 10-8 for Torres, Holt would have been losing the fight on two scorecards going into the 12th
-the stoppage looked just a little early for my taste (but I definitely wouldn't call it controversial), but I have no context for the short clip that I saw

The clip is too herky jerky for me to see at all.
But why do you guys find it so hard to determine if someone is OUT on their feet and in a desparate situation.
Just think of how badly Cotto has been out on his feet in fights, but he has been allowed to gather himself.
No one jumped in because he falling all over himself.
If Holt was out on his feet you should be able to see that.
If he was hurt or stunned but aware where he was and resting on the ropes with his hands up, you should be able to see that.
And if the latter is true then the fight should not have been stopped.
Have the guts to say the truth NO MATTER WHAT IT IS.
I think an argument can be made that the stoppage was premature, but I think we can all agree that it's better to be too early than too late. A few of the poster here are acting like it's the end of the world and that this is the biggest controversy to ever hit boxing. The truth is nothing can be further from the truth. Holt will be able to fight another day. And, based on what I know about the fight, the stoppage seems to have only made a difference in whether Torres won by stoppage or decision, there's nothing here worth getting excited about.

-the stoppage looked just a little early for my taste (but I definitely wouldn't call it controversial), but I have no context for the short clip that I saw
Did you see the full clip? Check the other thread its one of the 3 on the subject. It's not the whole fight but they show much more than the first one which was too short to tell.
Holt was leaning forward and into torres with his guard up and caught several shots on the gloves and threw a punch just prior to the ref stepping in.
It is controversial and it will be reviewed, as it should. What the Bo says? We'll see. Yet, if you dont appeal this?? They might as well not have an appeals process, which of course would be ridiculous.
I dont gain or lose either way, but i think the sport does, when there's such inconsistent interpretaion's of standards.
I dont wanna see guy's get hurt either. Tell me the same ref wouldnt have stopped Corrales vs castillo after the SECOND knockdown?? Would have been a tragedy, no?? I'm not comparing this fight on quality but the point is corrales was hurt much worse and did the impossible. This ref only tainted the fight, rather than allowing it to progress to the right conclusion, WHATEVER THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN:good

I haven't seen the fight but from what I have read it sounds like robbery but Holt should have known better and not have fought in Columbia.

Have the guts to say the truth NO MATTER WHAT IT IS.There's a big fucking difference between Cotto and Holt...1st of all Cotto kept boxing and moving when he was hurt....Holt went down by a vicious left hook...was still groggy when he beat the count. Holt was caught at the rope and wasn't moving or throwing punches. Cotto kept fighting... he just didn't bend over an allow Torres to punch at will like Holt did. Big fucking difference...:deal

I haven't seen the fight but from what I have read it sounds like robbery but Holt should have known better and not have fought in Columbia. It doesn't matter where they fought...Holt couldn't finish Torres and allow Torres to comeback and stop him...that's what you get when you talk the shit that Holt did before the fight. Fuck him.

I agree whole heartedly with Cotto but we are seeing two differnt things with Holt. Holt wasnt hands down allowing torres to get off. he blocked a couple and did throw a punch just before the ref jumped in. It wasnt a great punch but Holt was still leaning inside and making an attempt.
Tell me this ref wouldnt have waived off Corrales vs castillo after the second knockdown. Holt looked in no way as bad as corrales did just before landing the shot heard round the world:good
Again, I think the ref did BOTH FIGHTERS a disservice. Let the BO review. It was a very close fight on the cards and both were down in the fight.

First hand account from a poster on Maxboxing...
-----------------------------------
I saw the fight live in Barranquilla and the card was pretty good there were about 2,000 people but it felt like 10,000. First off I would like to give props to Kendall Holt he fought a near perfect fight a complete shut-out,everybody in the crowd was saying that Holt was 10X better shape and technique over Torres. Torres was getting tagged and he was scared to throw because Holt made him think twice after dropping him in the 6th. Now.... it was the 11th round and the colombians fans started cheering Torres and Torres started to connect and trade with Holt. Holt was running for his life doing circles in the ring then finally Torres connected with a left hook and dropped Holt nasty. Holt was on wobbly legs but bad he was fucked up big time and he was falling and holding Torres legs. There was a point that Holt did the zab judah and thats when Torres cornered him and connected about 5 shots the ref came in and stopped it.
IT WAS A GOOD STOPPAGE HOLT WAS OUT OF IT, IF TORRES DIDNT FINISH IN THE 11TH HE WOULD OF DONE IT IN THE 12TH. Holt cant make no excuses he had Torres out on his feet and he couldnt finish him, he blaming the fans and ref but the truth is he was out cold. Hopefully there will be a rematch but I doubt Torres people want another piece of Holt. Maybe one of the best fights I been to in my life. Well guys I will be going back to drinking my ass off and fucking beautiful colombian women.

Kendell Holt got robbed plain and simple. It is not just the premature stoppage. It is mainly the fact that beer and soda cans and water bottles were gettting thrown in the fucking ring! You can EVEN SEE ONE HIT KENDELL HOLT IN THE HEAD IN THE FUCKING CLIPS! Who can honestly say that shit would have went down here in the united states and the fight allowed to continue. Or at least have dried the ring mat. But I mean c'mon, it hit him in the fucking head. i mean what other evidence do u really need besides that?

I have SEEN ACTUAL video and the 11th was a circus. Water, ice, beer all over and the fighters slipping constantly, people reaching in to wipe while the fighters were exchanging, and Holt was defending himself and moving when the fight was stopped. My download isn't complete but from what I saw it was a total joke.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha....typical, but I still lost $300 god damn dollars...hahahahahahahaha.
It happens. The Ref should have definitely wiped up the ring or halted the bout if the fans were throwing liquid into the ring.
They could have just halted the bout due to dangerous conditions for both fighters, which would have forced a 2nd fight at another location.
Things happen. Good experience for Holt.
Now you just suck it up and move on. This isn't the first time someone has fought in hostile territory and it won't be the last.
Must have been a fun night at the fights in columbia wish we could have seen it.
Same here, i lost $200 on that fight, oh well next time i wont bet when someone travels to anothers country.

The man was out on his FEET in TWO DIFFERENT FIGHTS.
All he could do in the Corely fight was stumble around to keep from falling over, his legs were everywere.
What he got was EVERY BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT.
Essentially what they did was say if he IS NOT ON HIS BACK UNCONCISOUS we will let the fight go on.
hey......i don't mind them letting the fight go on till things are totally decided.
DONT FUCKING PLAY GAMES WITH ME......or I will easily show that silly fucker stumbling and bumbling like a fucking fool.
If it had been jay Nady in there with Cotto you best believe he would have lost already.you're fucking stupid...I was at the fight, idiot:patsch Wobbling but he kept fighting and moving. I'm not questioning how hurt Cotto was...we all know that...even a half a fag rocket scientist like yourself...:good

But I mean c'mon, it hit him in the fucking head. i mean what other evidence do u really need besides that?
At the time that it happenned, Holt didn't complain about it, the ref couldn't see it because he was administering an eight count, and Holt went right back into the fray.
As a result, it doesn't count as anything.
Maybe if Holt had complained about it right away, or if it had cut him, or struck him unconscious, it could have become a determining factor. But as it was, it played no official part in the fight.

boxbible ([Only registered and activated users can see links]): it swolled up his right eye and Kendell even said his vision was blurry after the can hit his head. i have even read that someone from the crowd at ringside pulled kendells leg after he slipped on the surface and was trying to get up. I posted this in another thread but i lived in colombia for 5 months once and in barrenquilla and have seen how sporting events go down. that ref was scared shitless of the crowd and for good reason. I have seen soccer games down there where the ref would get physically attacked for making calls against the home team.

I think the official part is still in question because Holt has filed a protest. I also don't think that an immediate protest by Holt is critical given all the required attendees: judges, physician, sanctioning body representative, promoters, regional commission members; I got to believe that one of them will be able to shed some light on this situation.
From the reports that I've read the crowd was out of control and their actions were disgustingly bad. But to be fair not all the ringside reports have concurred. If Holt was indeed hit with a full can of beer in the head one would have to say the fight would have to be declared a no contest, with or without an immediate protest. Plus reports of the debris in the ring during the 11th round would have to be investigated.
If the negative reports are true I don't think we'll be seeing many fighters willing to travel to Columbia to fight. It's tough enough to fight a pro fighter without having to put up with the kind of crap that's being bandied about.

After analysing the video (and spoke to others who already saw it) I must say that K. Holt is a what you would call a pussy.
The things his management claims like cans to have flown in the ring and his leg had been stranded are not true. Ok, some ice and kinda powder were thrown but no bigger or threatening items.
Holt was plain hurt the whole 11th round after Torres hit him with the left hook. He was simply trashed and ONLY show signs to fight AFTER the ref stopped the fight. The fight was very close till round 10, nobody really dominated.
This fight wasn't a robbery...

Holt pretty much ran the whole fight backpedaling and waiting for potshot counters. The only time he even attempted to move forward was after flooring Torres. In the 11th, they both threw left hooks while against the ropes but Torres' massive left landed first and knocked Holt senseless.
Torres proceeded to tee off on Holt finally cornering him and connecting with another series of good punches including a nice right straight, left hook, left uppercut, short right hook, left uppercut and a big right uppercut before the ref stepped in. I've seen plenty of earlier stoppages that were not contested.
Although I personally would let it go till someone can't stand up for the sake of clarity, most thing refs these days do not let it go that far before calling it a night. Holt was basically a punching bag up against the ropes with almost half a minute to go and another round to look forward to even if he made it out alive.

So holt ran the whole fight but managed to win rounds according to the judges (who had him ahead before the stoppage) and a knockdown. You just seem to me like a supposed fan of boxing who does not appreciate ring generalship and counter punching. Lemme guess, you hate floyd mayweather's style right? maybe have a bias against holt? torres fan? cotto hater?

I just said he went backwards most of the fight looking for a counter and didn't seem to want to engage. Nothing I said had any bias or untruth to it. Just because you lost some money on Holt doesn't mean you should feel the need to try and antagonize every poster who doesn't idolize Holt.

fatdrunkenslob ([Only registered and activated users can see links]): yeah well when you have someone who just chases you around non stop that can punch (but leaves himself wide open when he does) you want to make sure you land the perfect counter. did you not see kendell knock torres down? it was because he waited for his perfect oppurtunity. Look you call kendell's fightin style running, bet yet he knocks people down every time out it seems. If that is not exciting to you or if you dont understand why he was backpeddling, you need to watch a new sport. Oh and btw i did not bet on this fight because honestly it was too close for me to make a decision. Can i just ask if you think floyd mayweather's style is boring though? i really want to know your answer to that

I'm nor riding either mans nuts by saying THAT WAS A TERRIBLE STOPPAGE. The WBO had better take some action. At the VERY LEAST? Genaro Rodriguez should have seen his last day as a Championship referee.
Rodriguez stained the fight and has made Torres victory a questioned one. Clearly Torres had the upperhand in that round but it wasnt yet at its CONCLUSION.
The ref's a disgrace.

every boxer that gets stopped always claims that they were not hurt prior to the stoppage
Lennox Lewis claimed that he could have gotten up in the Rachman fight even , but if they didn't have that kind of attitude im sure they would never get to the level they did.
