good question. Personally i dont see Minter holding off this animal even tho he with his limited abilities held off Vito

Minter's tendency to cut would have been a drawback for him against Benn, otherwise I think he had a chance to possibly win a decision. Minter had a very good chin, and he proved vs. Antuofermo that he could apply himself to a disciplined boxing strategy, which would have been a good idea instead of engaging Benn in a slugfest. Minter was strong as well, which is why I give him a shot against Nigel.

Minter would give Nigel a good fight.....as long as he lasted. I see Benn overtaking this fight with brute force and sheer power, very much in the same way Hagler did.

At 160 Minter is a class above Benn: Minter avoids Benn rather face first attack on the back foot for half a dozen rounds, before upping the pace and stopping Benn in the middle rounds.

Minter TKO10.

But the more mature Benn of the 90s wins at catchweight...

I agree. Can Minter dish out worse punishment than the G-man?

A real tossup. If Minter fights a disciplined fight he may just take it on points. Minter loses his cool though & if that happends he gets stopped on cuts.

Since Minter was a true MW, I assume this is where the fight takes place? On Benn i always thought of him as a much better SMW than MW.

Anyway, I would lean towards Minter taking this one on points, and would not be surprised if he even stopped Benn. Keeping in mind that benn still had an awesome punch, even if not as mentally tough as he would be in a couple of years, could have a good shot.

I grew up watching nige so perhaps i am predujiced...just see benn being too much of a beast 4 minter. As was stated earlier, could minter do more damage than mcclellen? I think not...nige tko 7 for me

This is partly true, Minter could not do as much damage (single punch anyway) that mcClellan could....but neither could Michael watson and to a lesser degree Eubank...and they both manged to take Benn's power, wear him down and eventually stop him.

The McClellan fight came 4 years after his last as a MW. A seasoned SMW version of Benn, would quite possibly finishe Minter early...But as a MW which Minter was, against the best MW version of Benn...Give me Minter!

Minter staggered Hagler, and he was past his best by then, so yes Minter could do as much damage as McClellan, IMO.

No, Razor Ruddock being the exception to prove the rule!

Minter at 160 is miles above Benn. Benn was a limited face first brawler at 160.

When Minter was heading into the Hagler fight, that was the only time he was considered a top 10 p4p fighter in his whole life. He never took any serious beating prior to fighting Hagler, he just lost fights on cuts. Minter was 29 when he fought Hagler, hardly a shot fighter. Stop taking credit away from Marvin. Oh yeah Hearns legs were not 100% when Hagler beat him right, Bennie Briscoe was way too old right, Hagler will always have wins taken away from him by the 'experts'.

Top ten pound for pound was not exactly used to measure fighters in 1980.

Alan Minter was THE World Middleweight World Champion in an era where you could still just about remember all the World Champs, You did not silly pound for pound lists then to justify your place in the sport.

Minter was a pretty serious fighter from the mid 70s onwards, I would suggest he would of had to of been to beat the fighter (Vito Antuofermo) who held Hagler to a draw.....

I am hardly slagging Hagler off, he was one of my favourite fighters in the 80s and I loathe Minter for what he has become and for what he said prior to the bout.

Hagler does have wins taken away from by some. Briscoe was old, but Hagler beat him.

Hearns was coming up in weight, but Hagler beat him.

Leonard did only have one fight in five years, but Hagler beat h..........;)

By the way I am not an expert, not even an expert. Unless we are talking about being lazy.

I actually thought that, even though the respective results against Eubank may say otherwise, that there is a good chance Benn was a better middle than super-middle, he's all about insane aggression and i think he was a bit wilder earlier in his career, not necessarily a bad thing for his maek-up
