View Full Version : Dream commentator line up?

Mine would be jim watt, johnny nelson, barry mcguigan and steve bunce, could you imagine the debates these guys would have between each other?!
Then again cant picture steve bunce might be too loud and drown out the other guys
I'd have Ian Darke and Richie Woodhall commentating with Andy Kerr, Buncey, Barry Mac and Spencer Oliver in the studio.

i dunno realy i have always wanted to watch a fight with the actual fighters in it talking me through it.
Dunno about a specific line up but there is alot of good commentaters and you need this formula
a well established and excellant journalist - keeps the show together, give their view, know what people want to here and often know alot of facts (e.g Reg Gutteridge)
an ex fighter - to give a fighters perspective, to break down the fight (e.g Bernard Hopkins)
A top trainer - to anaylse te fight also (e.g Gil Clancey)

I'am going off the topic abit but I'am starting to like John Thaxton on ITV4... He seems to know his stuff and comes across very well.

AL BERNSTEIN! The guy is brilliant, IMO. I am also a fan of Duke McKenzie- he speaks when he needs to and isn't annoying. I also agree with jamie30002000 that Thaxton has taken to analysis and pre-fight commentary really well. Obviously Buncey gets the nod as well and everyone likes the Kerr-minator.

Foreman is alright but he sometimes speaks so much shit its unbeleievable sometimes i dotn have a clue what he s meaning
no love for Cosell i like him hes a nice character and cheery and really puts energy into it.
or Dunphy a great boxing mind knows alot and a great commentater dosent have alot of emotion though

i think having more then two commentators like the yanks do is not good, they just talk over eachother.
my choice would be of the current crop
woodhall as a co-commentator, the man is just an education to listen to, very knowledgable technically and doesn't have an ego btw i think he'll make a great trainer
main blow by blow commentator is a difficult one because there's not many good one's around these days, i like guys that get excited at the right times, have real enthusiasm and don't just seem positively bored. jim lampley was actually pretty good in the early days and blows hot and cold these days bit like ian darke
if there had to be a third guy, i would have mike tyson the guy knows his boxing, surprisingly articulate and would bring in the viewers
oh yeah and i would have bunce there in some sort of capacity probabily in the studio with a former pro, eubank or naz would be hilarious.

Watt and Reg were the ultimate commentators, they had a great chemistry with Reg's easy going way that he had and Watt's more analytical approach .. These 2 were easily the best ive ever heard and i'd have Barry Mcguigan and Johnny Nelson in the studio .... I wouldnt have Bunce because hes pissed most of the time and just shouts things, Kerr comes across like he's new to boxing and doesnt know the history of the sport and Nicky Piper is the most irritating boxing pundit in the history of the sport ..

Foreman is rubbish, his commentary on Hopkins v Trinidad is ridiculous, hes so biased towards Trinidad its untrue .... Foreman shouldnt be anywere near boxing commentary.
Roy Jones is also rubbish just because he talks about himself in the 3rd person like he'd say, 'If Roy was in there he'd do this .. ', it was funny but also kind of lame .... Hagler was a crap commentator, Leonard was very good ....

If you tuned into that fight in the 9th round, you would think that it was Tito giving the boxing lesson by the way Foreman was going on. Even Merchant, as we all know no Hopkins hugger by any stretch of the imagination, said to George "Why don't you want to give Hopkins more credit George? He's fought a very good fight so far."

I've revised my dream line-up.
Commentating - Manny Stewart, Jim Nealy
Studio - Andy Kerr (anchor), Buncey, McGuigan, James Toney.
*I was trying to think of a mouthy yank for the studio before, so nice shout by 'bored' for mentioning James Toney. I can imagine Toney and Buncey going at it and McGuigan being the voice of calm, with Andy Kerr throwing more petrol to fan the flames and likely to be egging on Buncey with more ammo, it would be carnage, but great.
Regarding the commentary, I dont want any bullshitting or non-stop waffling, just good incisive analysis, I want to concentrate on the fight and have some expert analysis, leave the messin for the studio commentary pre and post-fight.

I really like Teddy Altlas' pre fight analysis on ESPN, where he shows how each fighter can win the fight outside with some guy where they throw pretend punches at each other.
We could with something like over this side of the pond.

I second that- Merchant doesn't like to be challenged either so I could imagine Buncey ranting at him for ages until someone stopped it. How come no-one else has said Al Bernstein? I think he's brilliant and I always watch his shows. If you're reading this Buncey, get him on the boxing hour, mate!

Actually I'd have Gutteridge, Watt and Merchant (he is essential in my view) on commentary.
I'd have the studio guests the same as I had earlier except to put Kellerman on to rile Buncey
Beeston Brawler
06-15-2009, 11:21 AM
Ian Darke is a far better lead than anybody Setanta have had, especially the clown who was in the chair for Haye vs Barrett.
Then again, if I thought the commentator was bad that night, check the ring announcer, with his bright blue £2.50 clipboard from Staples with all the notes on, which were incorrect... :nut
In all seriousness.....
Anyone but Dave Clark in the studio as presenter - I like the guy but he knows nothing about boxing.
Say Andy Kerr as presenter..... could you have Colin Hart and Buncey together - I like Hart because he is objective, he stood out like a sore thumb in the Sky studio last time he was in there with the blatant nuthuggery on display!
Andy Kerr - Presenter
Steve Bunce & Colin Hart - guests (if they blend)
Jon Thaxton - analyst
Spencer Oliver - roving reporter (not Gabriel Clarke, Ed Robinson or Adam Smith)
Ian Darke - Lead commentator
Richie Woodhall/Glenn McCrory - co-commentator

Beeston, you think that ring announcer looked cheap, I've been to 4 or 5 Cage Rage shows a couple of years back. Have a look at the ring announcer for the UK Cage Rage fights. Christ, the gold earrings, necklaces and wristbands and gypsy shouting...Boxing is lucky to have avoided that lack of class.

Hagler is a good commentater picks up on stuff very well and anaylses fights good. Leonard is another great commentater really was objective and gave good insight on straytegy and being in the ring
James Toney, Mike Tyson, Naz and Eubank.

Agree Dave Clark and boxing do not go. I remember the Hart commentary that you refer to, this was the Hatton-Pac fight, and he was the only one that I could listen without wanting to slit my wrists.
Ian Darke is good, but I am kinda sick of him, I prefer to hear a different voice.

Who did Setanta have in the chair for the Haye-Barrett fight?
David Croft. Commentates on loads of things for the BBC, mostly Darts, Bowls and their F1 radio coverage.
I think the reason he hasn't been on Setanta recently is that most Setanta boxing dates (British and German) tend to coincide with the F1, which obviously takes priority.
I think he's a good commentator and hopefully he's back on the boxing soon. As for my line up....
Presenter-Andy Kerr
Studio Guests-Steve Bunce, Spencer Oliver and Jon Thaxton
Commentators-Ian Darke, Jim Watt and Richie Woodhall
Reporter-Rob Walker
Went for an all British line-up to keep it simple. Plenty of personalities on the studio panel, knowledge at ringside, and enthusiastic reporting.

Jimmy Magee comes up with some weird analogies, he must sit around all day thinking up that stuff and then sporadically reads it out whenever he cannot think of anything to say about the fight.....Apart from that he is tolerable..
