View Full Version : Give Tyson the Mental Fortitude of Joe Frazier.. What Do You Have?
I think you have quite possibly the greatest heavy of all times.
I dont want to get into the pattern of what you would get if you gave different fighters different attributes, but in this instance I couldnt help myself.

You still have a guy that gets beaten in his prime by better, bigger fighters.

I think honestly he would of had a longer reign as champ but just like any other champ before him, his skills would eventually decay with time. Tyson is loved for his flaws just as much as his accomplishments in the ring, if he wasnt a little mental in the ring he would not be as remembered as he his today. People love him for his intensity and raw rage he expresses in and out of the ring, thats most of the reason why people watched him for so long after his abilities diminshed.

I don't think prime Tyson had problems with mental fortitude, just a shitty support staff. Things went downhill after Cus died, and when he fired Rooney the end was nigh.
I think a better question is if Tyson still had D'Amato... how would his reign have played out?

Cus living longer merely would've delayed the inevitable self-destruction.
Tyson was still a guy with serious issues, and got into trouble when Cus was still alive anyway.

The mental fortitude that had Frazier on his ass 8 times in 2 fights and 7 rounds in total vs Foreman?

Tyson is already head to head the greatest Heavyweight of all time, as far as I'm concerned.

1. Fraizer was past it
2. That had less to do with Fraizer's mentality and more to do with Foreman's fists. It was a horrifically bad style match up for Fraizer.

Serious issues or not a delay of the inevitable would have translated into a longer reign.
Remember Tyson did have issues leading up to the Spinks fights which played on in the tabloids and 6 o'clock news. His marriage his personal life was littered with self destructive behaviour. Suicide attempts and what have you. This was in the 80s. The difference is his support system kept him in place and made sure that it never affected his ability in the ring. And it showed.
Once his support system failed to keep him in place he began to underperform the one place where he never got it wrong. The ring. So if had the mental fortitude of Joe Frazier, if his desire for the sport stayed true he would have had a longer reign and a much greater legacy.

Tyson's problem was lack of focus and overconfidence not Mental fortidude with Tyson even when he fought Holy, Douglass and Lewis and was getting his ass kicked he always tried to land that one miracle shot even though he was taking a pounding he never quit or tried to survive, he went out on his sheild trying to land that 1 punch but everyone always says he fell apart because he was just a bully.

his mental fortitude wasn't his problem. his inability to adapt and dedicate after about 88 or 89 was his problem. i never saw him fold in a fight minus maybe the mcbride fight.

Well, I'll tell you what you wouldn't have.
1) Tokyo.
2) The ear biting incident.

Nah..
Lewis with Ali's chin or Ali with Lewis/Foreman's power are better combination.
