View Full Version : Holt Vs. Torres --- A Rematch is imperative

Regardless of whether you thought it was an early stoppage or not --- this fight warrants a rematch...
One thing I think we all can agree on is that this was a highly contested bout filled with emotion and great energy....I think that the sanctioning bodies and the powers that be should mandate a rematch to clear up the controversy...
this time let it be in a more neutral ground where we can actually watch the fight without sifting through obscure websites.
I think Holt would win the hypothetical rematch.

re-posted from another thread:
After analysing the video (and spoke to others who already saw it) I must say that K. Holt is a what you would call a pussy.
The things his management claims like cans to have flown in the ring and his leg had been stranded are not true. Ok, some ice and kinda powder were thrown but no bigger or threatening items.
Holt was plain hurt the whole 11th round after Torres hit him with the left hook. He was simply trashed and ONLY show signs to fight AFTER the ref stopped the fight. The fight was very close till round 10, nobody really dominated.
This fight wasn't a robbery...

Fair enough - even if what you say is true ---- you don't think that a re-match is warranted?
Holt was dominating the fight up until the 10th round...and had Torres seriously hurt with that big knockdown ---- Torres fought back valiantly and hurt Holt w/ that huge left hook which led to the 11th round controversy...
all ridiculousness aside (soda, slippery ring, poor stoppage, bitching from Holt's corner) this doesn't warrant a rematch to you?

I actually mean the full-fight video, just to avoid misunderstandings..

Didnt Torres put Holt down earlier in the fight as well?

No, Holt catched Torres in the 6 and was credited with a knockdown...

It's not uncommon for things like this to happen in other countries, if kendall says that happened it happened. There should be a rematch, because he's clearly the better fighter.

He didn't show that he's the better fighter in this very bout.

They did'nt really want to go there to fight anyways. Torres people promoted it and some of the judges were Torres's people go figure.

Why did'nt he? He was clearly ahead on the cards. How could you even call him a pussy under those conditions?

The fight wasn't that good, both didn't do much till round 6. Than Holt catched Torres and controlled the next to rounds. In round 8 Torres came back and took the momentum chasing Holt around the ring, finally catching him with that hook in round 11. As described in the post at the start of this thread, Holt was hurt fom that moment on just running away (and because of the damp canvas slipped at doing so).
The fight was close up to this moment, but I don't mind seeing a rematch - there was not that much of action...the fight was rather boring.

I could have sworn Torres dropped Holt early in the fight and then Holt dropped Torres twice all this before the 11th.

Why not it's been done to us all the time starting in the olympics.

fyi: the reason I think the stoppage was poor is because we've seen time and time again fighters regain their composure in the eyes of adversity --- according to this stoppage - cotto should've been stopped *twice* against torres when they fought - as he was hurt in the same manner (learning forward...grabbing, ducking etc...) --- holt should've *at least* been given the chance to fight through it --- as that's part of boxing.

No, Holt never went down before the 11th. Torres only went down once near the end of the 6th. Torres did slip in the wet corner while trying to finish Holt but got right back up to trap Holt in another corner.

Holt was getting clobbered by a series of flush punches when he was trapped in the corner. It all depends on when a fight should be stopped and I don't think there are any hard and fast rules so there will always be controversy.
Torres had more than sufficient time to finish holt even in the 11th or if not then than in the 12th. Let's just say that it was a lot better than the calzaghe/manfredo stoppage where punches were not even being landed. Also keep in mind that other than Cotto, Torres has never failed to stop a hurt opponent. And we all know that Cotto is twice as tough as the weak chinned Holt both physically and mentally I might add.

a rematch is not a bad idea, but don't forget that torres is the champion, so holt should be the one making concessions as to where the fight is fought.

I agree - the Calzaghe/manfredo stoppage was embarassing to the sport of boxing --- which is why i'm rooting for Kessler to knock Calzaghe silly as he won't be able to flash rabbit punches against Kessler.
But I just think Holt deserved to fight through that round given the fact that he was not only in the fight - but arguably winning the fight at that point.

There's a certain element of danger to that line of thinking though. Let's say all refs are not allowed to stop fights when there's 30secs left in the round. What happens if that fatal punch lands because a ref is looking at the clock instead of the fighter because there was only say 15secs left? Chances are Torres would have landed another heavy barrage because there was still like 25secs left when the ref stopped it.
It's Holt's fault for not going after Torres after knocking him down hard. You can bet that Torres will not let Holt off the hook in the 12th even if Holt managed to survive the remainder of the 11th.
