Wow. The MMA world is in total shock and uproar after Ray Mercer knocked the fuck out of MMA's Tim Sylvia in 8 seconds.
MMA fans were calling this the "MMA vs. Boxing" as the bout was orginally going to be under boxing rules and Tim Sylvia joked how he would be beating the 48 y.o. Mercer at his own game while eating taco bell the day before.
The bout was then changed to be under UFC rules, favouring Sylvia. MMA fans gloated how this was the beggining of MMA's world domination and swamping of boxing.
To bad their boy (a highly respected MMA heavyweight) got knocked out with an overhand right in a savage KO.

haha, as always it's too different sports. I respect fighters in both. having said that, i don't have a ton of respect for the MMA fans i've encountered. they're cocky, have NO idea what technique and fighting looks like and shit on boxing routinely. MMA is an easy alternative to boxing and it's time they learned a little humility

Gimme a fucking break. Mercer did the world a favor by knocking that scrub Sylvia out. No self respecting MMA fan gives two shits about who KO's Sylvia at this point in his career. It's like boxing fans saying boxing lost all credibility because Joe Louis had to perform in wrestling matches after his career was over.
Yay, Mercer. Thank you for swelling Tim's big fucking mouth shut.

Why do people care what the MMA nuthuggers think? Fuck 'em. Boxing has been around for over a hundred years- IT'S HERE TO STAY. Just the amount of people on this forum shows you that boxing is as healthy as ever. Let the MMA fans be- who cares which is better in their opinion? I don't. You have to appreciate the skills of the MMA dudes but it's not for me; boxing is just to exciting in comparison, IMHO.

I Had to e mail that link to my Brother in law they always talk shit about how MMA fighters own boxers, infact after Mercer lost to Slice they made and even bigger deal out of it.
I kept pointing out that Mercer was an old washed up boxer who took alot of punishment through out his career and Kimbo basicly had to resort to chocking the man to beat him.
This right here is just a HUGE bitch slap in the face of my brother in law, I wonder if I will be allowed to go to the fathers day BBQ at his house after this:huh

I am a fan of both sports, but this incident definitely does not make MMA look very good.
No matter how much you think Sylvia sucks at his craft, he was still universally recognized as a top 10 heavyweight fighter and a 2-time former UFC heavyweight champ. He fought for the UFC title just one year ago. He got destroyed by a 48 year old boxing retiree who has a MMA record of 0-1, with that one loss to Kimbo fuckin Slice. This is utterly embarassing for MMA. No denying it. It's equivalent to Royce Gracie stepping out of retirement and into a boxing ring and knocking out Chad Dawson.

I just did a little research on this myself it looks like Sylvia was attempting to start a career in professional boxing, this fight was supposed to be a boxing match between the two.
However at the last min they got a call from the commission saying this was an illegal match, Ray took no time to say,
" I trained for 8 weeks to box we can get in the ring and do what we trained to do and no man sitting behind a desk should tell us weather or not we should fight we have both trained for it, so I am going to go in there and do what I trained to do and thats boxing, if your a man you would do the same thing and be a man of your word
However if you want to kick and wrestle and take each other down to the ground we can do that as well"
and at the last moment they put these two together in a MMA match, I have a feeling thats what they wanted to do anyways, they didnt want Sylvia to enter the boxing ring and actually box that would be murder.
So they took the fight and the type of fight that would give Sylvia an advantage too bad his chin failed him ohh in about 8 seconds:yep

Exactly and that's what's so funny about it. It's also the reason why these guys aren't world class and can't be taken seriously. If you can come in off the street with little or no MMA experience and beat a former UFC champ that easily your sport is a cruel joke period end of discusiioon. Somethig like this would never happen in boxing. Hell even a crap HW champ like John Ruiz would KO any of these guys if they ever decided to step foot in a boxing ring. Even a scrub like Sylvia has trained for years to advance in the sport. There has never been an example of a great or champion MMA fighter with little to no training. These guys train for years - just like boxers. Sylvia was never great and was only successful because of his size advantage. He was very much the Valuev of MMA - except much worse.

Can someone explain the neurosis behind this overriding fear of another fighting sport by fans that claim to be strict boxing purists?
Do fans feel threatened for some reason? Seriously. It's not like we're going to wake up tomorrow to a newscast stating that there will be no more boxing matches in the world.
And who's fault is it that guys like John Ruiz, Valuev, and Fres Oquendo continue to contend for a heavyweight championship? Boxing has it's share of horrible fighters and bad fights as well. I have a copy of Klitschko/Ibragimov on DVD if anyone wants a copy.

That's taking it too far. MMA definitely takes a great deal of practice and dedication. Boxers only train in one craft. That's why their stand-up is generally so much better than MMA fighters. But unlike boxers, MMA fighters have to train multiple crafts, including boxing, wrestling, brazilian-jiu jitsu, judo, muay thai, etc.. I definitely have respect for those guys. No not anyone can land KO blows , it takes more then a strong punch and big fist to KO a well schooled well conditioned boxer out, and that if you can land a clean shot. Not only that who to say if you land a clean shot that the fighter is going to be KOed.
More then likely Sylvia took this same thinking into the ring with him and you saw the results, knocked stiffer then my dick in the morning.
Don't get me wrong I have lots of respect for MMA, but there is a growing fallacy among MMA fans that anyone off the street can be a boxer. mercer did one of the oldest tricks in the books, he moved left , got sylvia to follow then he move back to his right and stepped in with a right .. most experience fighter would have saw this coming a mile away, and carried their left high and caught the punch on their arm or ducked under it , Sylvia did not have the skill set to see this coming and bam!!!
Boxing is more then just being tuff and throwing punches.

I respect MMA, but at the same time they brought in on theirselves. They tried to bash boxing every chance they got. The talked about how a couple of no name boxers lost in MMA and all that. Now here we have a 33 yr old former UFC HW champion getting KOed in under 10 secs, by a 48 yr old in an MMA fight. If the shoe was on the other foot they wouldnt shut up so neither am I. No disrespect to MMA, but boxing has the superior athletes and warriors.

I don't dislike MMA, but I think the fans are quite ridiculous.
Boxing never attempted to shit all over MMA. It was Dana White who went out of his way to discredit boxing.
As a sport, you have to respect it because these guys train like everyone else. I just think it's utter shit boring.
I just hate the typical gay fashion sh*t of MMA. Go to any f'n UFC fight in Vegas and its the same meathead out of shape retard wearing a Tapout shirt and surfing shorts. Give them a freakin' beer and they think they are Chuck f'n Lidell.

Yeah, these guys are just living vicariously. And they do take the fashio thing to an extreme. I guess they think it makes them look tough. They don't realize they look like EVERY OTHER MMA FAN...:rofl:rofl

Any MMA fan who knows anything about the sport truly does not give a fuck what happens to Tim Sylvia. The fact is this was the biggest shit pot nothing of a fight in MMA. Tim is shot, he got ktfo by Nog who is way past his prime and Fedor destroyed him in his last fight before Mercer. The fact that he's a former 2 time UFC champ means very little because every MMA fan knows that at the time he was UFC's heavy-weight champ, the heavy-weight division was the UFC's weakest and still is. Tim's skills are limited, and he does NOT represent MMA very well. I gaurentee you if Mercer had fought someone like Mir, Frank would have broken his arm just like he did Sylvia's. Or perhaps put him against someone closer to his age, Mercer vs Couture? Randy would rape Ray.
So everyone getting exited about this fight and giving obviously un-educated opinions need to get back to your their paintings.

MMA needs to refocus...They have 5 great fighters. They have a bunch of gatekeepers and maybe 2 prospects, one of them Cain Velasquez.
They need to be serious and act professional, take the craft and hone it like Lyoto does. Train what youre good at 90% of the time.
Note that because you watch TUF and you go to the gym and wear affliction shirts, this doesnt make you an MMA fighter. And if these same guys decided to train in MMA for two years and win some fights, it doesnt make them great.
I get the feeling that most MMA fighters really think theyre that great. Like a Koscheck, McFedries, Grove, a Herman. I mean observe their demeanor and body language especially after winning a fight, they quickly forget that they just got Koed the fight before and may get Koed again the next fight.
Who are the great fighters in MMA?
Fedor, Silva, MAchida, GSP, Torres
How bout boxing?
Theres your answer right there

Somebody is seeing things through rose tinted glasses, yes he wasn't your top guy but he did enough to be ranked in the top 10 HW's in MMA, he did enough to become a UFC HW Champion and he did that only 2 years ago, he was fighting a guy with 1 fight's experience. Ray Mercer hasn't been a boxing champion since 91 and he hasn't fought a meaningful fight in years, Sylvia however "weak" amongst the elite's of UFC was still "up there" and he got embarrassed by a boxer who is not even good enough to beat Richel Hersisia (last boxing match) who lost to Fraudley Harrison.
In summary:
Sylvia had:
The height, the reach, the youth, the experience, his type of match and the ranking to not only destroy this old war horse boxer but to take him in style.
Mercer had:
More talent.
End of Story.

How quickly people forget
Why are people so angry at MMA? Do you punks really think we give a fuck what you have to say about MMA? Why are you keep trying to compete against MMA? What are you trying to fucking prove?
Do you even realize this is a boxing forum with an MMA sub-forum? That means everyone on this website came here because they were a boxing fan first. I highly doubt anyone here posts on sherdog or w/e other MMA forums out there. Hell, sherdogs boxing forum used to be good(haven't been there for a while). So who are you trying to convince by spitting your bullshit here?
Again, WHO HERE EXACTLY are you trying to convince and with what? Do you realize you're just waiting for your turn to talk?

First question; We're not.
Second question; Yes otherwise you wouldn't have replied.
Third question: The people who happen to read this thread and think of this as anything less then a total embarrassment to bar room brawling, I mean MMA.
Fourth question: See question 3.
Fifth question: Am I? Odd, I thought I was putting forth a rebuttal to another member of the forum. Well at least you know what my mind set was when I replying to someone. Good job.

No arguments here, he is more talented than Sylvia. No one is arguing that the heavy-weight scene in MMA is weak. But you can't simply judge all of MMA on one performance, by a sub-par fighter past his prime. My hat's of to Ray for ktfo Timmy, but let's remember Kimbo handed him his arse and Kimbo is far from elite in MMA.

Which goes to show the whole random throwing, talentless bums can make it in UFC, Kimbo and Brock are both just big monsters who can throw a hard punch/knee. Ones the UFC champ after 3 fights and the other is seen as a hard guy and he got knocked out by a 10lb child (Seth) throwing a weak jab. To me it's all too lucky, sure there are some skillfull fighters but you don't need to be to win, all you need to do is be a smart puncher like Mercer and you can beat anyone on your day. I have no doubt a top boxer at the top of the sport would kill someone from MMA if they were allowed the gloves off.

No one sees Kimbo as a 'hard guy'. Kimbo is garbage, but somewhat a celebrity. Yes Brock is a monster who also happens to have an extensive amatuer wrestling background. To be honest I think the current UFC champions are probably more athletic and better skilled then some world champions in boxings alphabet soup. Which goes to show that many fighters in boxing have ducked and weaved the toughest fights and ended up with a 'world' title. I'm not going to say MMA doesn't have it's faults because it certainly does, but don't pretend that boxing has never had a can of a champion.

Kimbo was not seen as a joke until he was sparked by that little white boy, he was seen as the next big thing in MMA, one lucky punch and that's all over with.
However it's very true and there are too many bum world champions but I would still pick them all above MMA fighters to win (even Willie Limond the WBU champ). There are things I envy in MMA, but none of them to do with fighting, only to do with promotion, all fighters being in the same league (pretty much) and the PPV cards usually have more then 1 top fight on, hell I even watch some MMA just because of this but to me it just simply doesn't compare to boxing in terms of skill or excitement (certain fights the latter one).

To win what? A boxing match? I agree! Boxers are hands down the best punchers in the world This does not mean the top MMA guys lack skill though, grappling in itself takes years to master and many of these guys have been training since they were kids. Granted some guys have won titles more with heart and toughness than skill but these guys don't stay on top for long.
Put simply, anyone who thinks Ray Mercer has some how made a point about boxing opposed to MMA is kidding themselves.
Excellent fucking post. Silva fell for the oakey doke.:rofl:lol: Anyone who has spent time in the ring knows not to fall for this.
Exactly, some of these guys think they can just pick up boxing skills with in a few boxing session and some mit work. Mercer maybe old but he still has world class KO power in both hands and over 20 year experience , you had better know what your doing when you step in the ring with someone like that. That just goes to show the level of disrespect some MMA fans and fighter have for boxing, some of these fans are calling this a lucky punch, but if you know what your looking at you can see mercer set this punch up with his footwork.
