I think Chuck IMO he dominated a tougher divison. Hughes record is great but you can screw with Liddells hes defeated Wanderlei,Randy 2x,Tito 2x,Babalu 2x,Horn,Mezger,Overeem,Belfort,Bustamante,Randleman thats a lot of Champions right there.

Neither is great. They were good in zuffa when zuffa only had 4 or 5 quality fighters.

Although Liddell has a GREAT record on paper how far would he really have gone if he was in PRIDE? He was getting owned by Overeem until Overeem did his usual trick and gas. And vs Rampage he was severely owned. Back then the PRIDE 205 division was stacked and far better than anything the UFC had. That being said he has an awesome list of names on his resume.

Matt Hughes looses 30 pounds and lies on top of his opponents, he has a game plan and it works for him. Chuck Liddel had a decent chin, good power in his punches and his stand up was decent and ground fighting was good, in a time where people were only good in one dicipline.
Liddel takes it.

I don't really agree that he was getting owned by Overeem. Sure he seemed to not have answer for Overeem's knee in the beggining but he survived, and even Liddell seemed gassed when he threw that monster right hand on Overeem's forehead, then he finished him. Chuck showed a great chin in that fight.
Chuck, but it's very close. His fights on the whole are more entertaining, but the level of competition for both is comprable imo

Liddell -better competition at 205 than 170.

Both were great cash cow for UFC.
As fighters, the'll both be remembered like Royce Gracie, great for the sport but not the greatest MMA fighters.
Ali/Tyson in their primes can beat the top heavyweights now but Liddell will never beat a Machida ever.

Curious what you mean by this?
Hughes has won 9 title fights -- Liddell 5.
They have both beat 1 reigning title holder in their division in a title fight.
Hughes has beat 6 opponents who were former/future/reigning UFC champs, 1 former WFA champ and 1 former Shooto champ --- Liddell beat 6 former/future/reigning UFC champs if you count Mezeger's tournament wins, 1 former Pride champ and 1 future Strikeforce champ.
So I would say Huges has beaten, at worse, as many champs, but more championship fights.
I would have to vote Hughes, he dominated his division much longer than Chuck. Both have great legacies though.
Sorry to bump this, missed it originally.

Moronic.
Name people in their weight classes with better legacies?
Wanderlei Silva? Maybe, I don't think so, but maybe.
GSP? He is on his way to pass Hughes, but hasn't done as much as champion.
That puts that each at #2 at worst. I am just dieing to read who has a better legacy at 205 than Chuck and at 170 than Hughes. Just dieing to know.

I reluctantly vote for Hughes. Tomorrow, I might vote for Liddell.
It's a very tough call.

Chuck Liddel hands down. Matt Hughes is the most overrated fighter in the history of the sport. Liddel has two KO victories over Couture and Ortiz, thats the end of the conversation really.
Hughes best win came over GSP, who later avenged brutally twice and BJ Penn who is a LW and had previously subbed him in 1 round and was winning the rematch until he broke his rib and gassed out

GSP HAS PASSED HUGHES. Compare their resumes :deal
GSP:
Penn x2
Hughes x2
Fitch
Alves
Koscheck
Trigg
Parysian
Heiron
Serra
Has only two losses which he avenged with brilliant performances and dominated. Has not only beat, but completely dominated all of his opponents. Has also cleaned out a STACKED division.

Passed him opponents and ability wise ; but he has not been nearly the champion Hughes was.
That belt becomes a very heavy crown so to speak, lets see GSP pass his championship accomplishments before we move him past Hughes completely.

GSP has MUCH better contenders to defend against. If GSP, Fitch, Alves, Kos, etc were in the UFC back when Hughes first won the belt he wouldn'thave the legacy he does today. You can ignore that fact if you want, but everyone else doesn't have to or shouldn't. :deal

And you can ignore the fact that the game as a whole has gotten better. GSP's contenders were not better in relation to the rest of the field than Hughes'.
While you're at it ignore how good Newton was, how good Mach was, Sherk, Trigg, GSP himself, and BJ Penn.
One guy who was around when Hughes was, was Matt Serra. Or are you gonna ignore that little "incident" as well?
Hughes' title Interuption was BJ Penn, GSP's was Matt Serra.
Like I said, GSP is on his way, but as a champion, he is not what Hughes was as a champion. Give it some time and he will likely pass him, he has not yet.
