The only one that could hang would be St. Pierre. He can actually box very well. BJ has some hand skills as well. Pulver and Marcus Davis are both ex-pro boxers, as well. So there's a few out there. Sylvia got outboxed by Couture for fucks sake.

Good news for boxing fans.

Mercer was actually a pretty good HW in boxing and its nice to see him destroying "top guys" in MMA at their own sport. 9 fuckin seconds. Thats less than a David Tua fight ;p

Ironically he did beat a ranked fighter in 9 seconds..but there basically was no fight...It only lasted 9 seconds.. It was originally supposed to be a boxing match. Sylvia had the intention to KO Mercer... that's HIS problem , any bum in this sport would easily own any ranked fighter with the very same technic Kimbo employed..

Only Sylvia didn't.....Sylvia was pretentious , naive and stupid enough to try to beat a boxer at his own game. Which is utterly stupid. Especially since he had all the adventages in the world on his side. (he could've simply shoot for his legs and go for an instant takedown)...

Of course they can't box for shit , 90% don't even have an amateur boxing record. Most are ex-judokas or ex-wrestlers or ex-adcc participants... MMA is a natural route in their career since it's mostly based on grappling.

You saying that MMA guys can't box for shit is as obvious as saying
boxers can't grapple for shit.... Two different sports.

Mercer didn't prove anything...And if he did , so did Kimbo...

On the other hand , things would've been quite embarrassing if Mercer would've submited Sylvia by armbar or something... He just did what a boxer does best.... and took advantage of it against a guy who was deluded...Sylvia thought that he was going to ko mercer's ass...that was his intention...and he paid for it.

There's no "nice try". It's the reality of the sport. Mercer KOing Sylvia was almost predictable even at mercer's age.

as an MMA fan this was definitely a humiliating night. I'm hoping this will be a wake up call to MMA fighters that learning just enough striking to "get by" is crap. I hope boxing fans don't shape their entire opinion of the sport on this one night though, as there are certainly at least some guys who aren't completely awful on the feet (Anderson Silva, GSP, BJ Penn).

problem is like someone already said, the majority of MMA guys are making the transition to MMA from grappling backgrounds, or they are guys who signed up at an "MMA" school, where they teach boxing, wrestling, and grappling all with mediocrity, creating a well-rounded fighter whose not GOOD at any one discipline, just equally average (or shitty) at everything.

Don't be stupid. No boxer can win in an MMA match, barring a nice solid shot on the chin in the opening seconds, like Mercer did here. Once the fight is on the ground, the boxer is helpless.

Likewise, no MMA guy is going to beat a top flight boxer with gloves on in a boxing ring. They're two different sports.

There was never a question that MMA guys lack the stand up strikes to compete with a PRO boxer. Or at least a skilled PRO boxer. But to say MMA guys are "un-skilled" that is untrue. They just aren't versed well in the "sweet science" and if you try to bang with a boxer you aren't gonna make it out of the round. Just like if the boxer tried to take the MMA guy to the ground his chances of survival is slim to none.

They're superior in every fighting department except for punching. It's kind of crazy that people would ever think MMA fighters are even comparable to boxers in terms of punches. They're worlds apart, boxing in MMA is only one element.

It's fair to say that it easier for a Boxer to learn MMA than the other way around.

BTW the vids of guys taking other guys down and choking them out shows just how random wins and losses can be in MMA.

MMA lacks long standing dominant champs(barring Fedor of course)

The trouble with most wrestlers and mma fighters is they come to learn boxing at too late an age for it then to come natural to them,when I boxed I saw this myself with a coule of judo fellas and more recently a really good MMA fighter.

a while back lol when he was in the ufc he beat brandon vera. Since then he loss to noguiera-fedor and mercer:lol: I could understand losing to feodr and noguiera since both are considered top heavyweights but losing to mercer in an mma match:patsch
