I have now seen 3 of irish middleweight prospect Andy Lee's fights, & think hes a very talented young fighter.
I was most impressed with him in his fight with former world champ Carl Daniels. Although Daniels was past his prime, it was still a dangerous move for Lee, who had only had 7 pro fights going into the contest.
during his post fight interview, I thought I heard a slight english twang in his voice, then I seen on Boxrec that he was actually born in London.
So I was just curious to know a bit more about Andy Lee, was he brought up in England & moved over to Ireland recently, or did he move to Ireland at a young age?
I heard he represented Ireland in the olympics also,
So what I suppose Im trying to ask is, is Andy Lee a true irishman, or is he a plastic paddy? Sorry for asking, but Im slightly intoxicated at the moment & my curiosity is getting the better of me:lol:

As far as I know, his family moved to England from Ireland, where he was born, in London. He and his family moved back to Limerick, and he won a bronze medal at the olympics. If you go to irish-boxing.com (links) you can get his site and his bio.
Whats doing with Ian Millarvie?

He didn't win a medal at the Olympics. He won medals (not gold) at the world juniors and European seniors.

Looks stiff but has good power and good bodyshots like that one he landed on Healy.

Correct he was robbed in the Olympics .
I've seen a few of his fights so far and he is definitely the best prospect in Irish boxing and I feel he could go a long way . With Manny Steward leading him he's in good hands too .

hes got a great career ahead of him.Top amateur pedigree plus sparring the likes of kermt cintron, jermain taylor and all the other top americans.Plus of course he has the legendary emanuel steward in his corner who rates him extremely highly

Manny Stewart has called Lee 'a future Hall of Famer' - lofty praise indeed and maybe wishful thinking. However i have seen 5 or 6 of his fights and i think he will definitely become middleweight champ if he has a decent beard.I have yet to see him get hit yet due to his excellent defense. Can he take a punch? Anyone know?

He spars with Wladimir Klitschko, so even though it isn't full force, obviously, he won't have a glass jaw. Manny Steward wouldn't put him in with Klitschko, if he couldn't take a decent, half hearted shot.

I think Lee is top quality. Will they put him in for the British title in the future, I would like to see that.

It would be great to finally have an elite Irish fighter who can become a force. Go Andy Lee! By the way, what is a "plastic paddy" anyway?
Someone who claims to be Irish but isn't really(this includes those of Irish descent) , but Lee isn't one .
His parents are both Irish , they moved to London where Lee was born and then they moved back to Ireland(where Andy learned to box) .
Lee is a great talent and the questions about his chin were for me answered during his senior amateur days.He fought the best in the world russians ,cubans, european, world and olympic medalists and was never even knocked down not to mind out.
I know the two sports are diffrent but a slap on the chin is a slap on the chin and if youre chinny it will be found out at amateur level.

How could a person who is of Irish descent not really be Irish? I guess people from Ireland consider Irish-americans to be 'Plastic Paddys' because they were born in america.
I didn't say all of those of Irish descent but if one of your grandmothers was Irish , you've never been to Ireland and none of your other relations are Irish then you'd be a plastic paddy if you described yourself as Irish .

Lee won that fight and won an Irish title every year after that until he turned pro..he also won a silver medal at the World Juniors in Cuba and boxed out of the St Francis club in Limerick..

My sister has lived in Ireland for over five years. Loved it so much when she visited she decided to never come back to New Jersey. Married an Irishman named Kelly and got a great job with a computer company. Sorry, this is lounge talk so I'll wrap it up. I have been to Holland, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Slovakia, Russia, Ukraine, Austria - I defiately plan to go to Ireland. I can stay with Dawn and Kelly! Have a good one.
So your sister has lived in Ireland for 5 years and married an Irishman(his surname is of no importance)...........I wouldn't call her a plastic paddy .
Anyway I've gone off-tpoic so I'll simply say , hope you have a nice time over here .

Obviously ur not Irish and most would consider you a plastic Paddy but Imo if you know about your heritage and are proud of it then there is nothing false (plastic) about you.Plastic paddies are those who want to be known as Irish but have no clue about their anchestry and call themselves Irish just because their name sounds Irish

The way I look at it is if you have a parent who was born in Ireland then you can class yourself as Irish. You are the real deal Jeff IMO.
Plastic paddies... its a complicated subject.

The notion of a "plastic paddy" is something devised be British people to make second generation (or 3rd or 4th etc) Irish people to disassociate themselves from their Irish roots.
You dont get it so much in America or Australia just Britain because they you holding any allegency to anyone except Ould Lizzy.
I wouldnt call anyone a Plastic Paddy - its an ignorant, lazy and bigotted term. Would people in American say that black people shouldnt describe themselves as African-American because their family came over/was forced over from Africa 15 generations ago??

The reason you don't get it in America or Australia is because that where all the people claiming to be Plastic Paddys live. Most Plastic Paddys in America are mongrels anyway, not Irish, and just pick the heritage they thing is the 'coolest'.

I don't know why people born in the U.S. don't call themselves American - they should be proud of that and stop going back through their ancestors to find an identity.
In my mind if you are born and live in the U.S. and have Irish parentage, you're still bloody American.
All this 1/3 Italian, half Polish and 1/4 Irish does my nut in.......

shit talk!! Ireland is a richer country than the UK - higher standard of living, better educated, long life expectance etc etc etc!
British and more accurately English people are disliked across the world because they are murdering ignorant and arrogant wankers! I know that will hit a nerve with many English people on here but the fact is that it is true.

An interesting point about his amateur experience and you might be right about the measure of the old chin resistance being tested before he turned pro...and whilst my point is a bit off the subject, for which I apologies, but it did get me thinking....was Amir repeatadly knocked down in the his amateur days? As people keep claiming he has no chin? Is there any evidence of this in his non-paid days? I know Limond put him down, but anyone has a punchers chance if they connect..my question is "does Amirs amateur career" suggest he has no chin, or are people just looking to criticise him for being a star already?..we English do have a habit and history of knocking those who appear to be succesful without reason to do so...

Khan did get dropped heavily by Craig Watson towards the end of his amateur career so yes there was some evidence of a suspect chin before he turned pro.

Thanks for you reply..how many amateur fights did Amir have? As being kncked down "once" does not indicate a propensity to "go down", unless he only had one amateur fight?..however, having had a chance to google Amirs amateur record, it appears (unless I am mistaken) he had approx 50 amateur fights..therefore if Craig was his only blemish (in terms of being knocked down) then thats suggests that Amir got knocked down in ONLY 2% of his amateur fights..now I am no statitician, but that does not suggest a dodgy chin???

I don't know how many fights Khan had but he was an outstanding amateur.
It is not the Watson knockdown alone that suggests his chin is questionable - there is also evidence of it in his relatively short pro career to date. The fact he is consistently put in with light hitting opponents also suggests a weakness.

Good point..I guess if he fights Earl or Thaxton next, then this will surely test his punch resistance..we shall see...
