You sure he didn't say he's been on the razz with Jim? Hatton is a mentalist between fights. The funniest thing about this vid is it's one released by himself with all the 'Hatton' logo and everything on it. Officially endorsed Hatton pisshead video exclusive.:?

We can argue that till the cows come home but he's maintained that his style of living between fights is what's kept him going. It's a very odd situation where he needs to make himself a mess between fights to wind down so he can then justify working so hard at the gym- knowing that he can enjoy himself again afterwards.

maybe from a results point of view it hasn't helped but that "image" (genuine or not) has been good for business.
Of his fights he's won all but 2 and of those 2 would he have won either if he didn't like a drink inbetween fights? I doubt it TBH.

All good points but let's say at 23 he was taken to America and given different sparring, different training and a different lifestyle. Could he have been a better fighter? Could someone have grafted better skills onto an already solid foundation?

Big question mate and I really don't know TBH. My gut reaction is that he's done pretty weill with the skills/ height/ reach etc he's been given. I'm not sure he could have achieved a hell of a lot more, esp. as moving America might have scarificed his ability to build up a fanbase and get him the fights he wanted.

Had he done that would he have had the huge status and following he has built up though? I think you have to appreciate Hatton for all he is: a normal guy with the heart of a lion, never afraid or one to shirk a challenge and, ultimately, one of the best (not THE best but one of) from these shores. Never an all-time great but was the boss of LWW for the best part of 4 years. He's got nothing more to prove, IMO- he's only lost to, arguably, the best two of his generation and gave it his best. Not a bad CV.

No arguments with any of the points made and I totally agree with you about the marketing side of things which has been central to Hatton's success. Let's, for a second, take that side of things away though and look at him from a purely boxing point of view.
Look at his strengths. Good chin, respectable power, good foot and handspeed. Look at his weaknesses. Lack of head movement, smothers his work at times, neglects a game plan at times.
To me the weaknesses are things that could have been corrected. So from that I draw the conclusion that he could have been a much better fighter with the right training.

TBH before the mayweather fight I always though Hatton had a fairly decent boxing brain, he'd made adjustments in quite a few fights and shown he was adaptable but I think theres an argument to say that as he moved up in class his options to adapt became more limited, he had to use that "head in the chest pressure" style against the real world class opponents and when it wasn't working he was fucked.

I reckon within 5 years he will be an absolute blimp. Boxing has probably kept him on the rails, he has always said he lets his hair down between fights, i think the training stopped him being like it full time. It will be hard now not to be like it full time as he is used to being pissed when hes not training.

I feel sorry for Ricky, wears his heart on his sleeve and I think it kills him that he was never quite the best and will never be remembered as such, only a great boxer with a massive following. I think this is why he doesn't want to quit but he must see that he will never again get the chance to prove that he is the best and rightly so because he wasn't.
Fight Khan for him, us (those that want to see it) and British boxing then retire Ricky.

Yes but he's what 30ish now? Much harder to do that in your 30s than your 20s.
What I'm worried about with Hatton is what he's going to do when he doesn't have another fight, when he doesn't have that motivation to keep him training. His metabolism is quite clearly fucked and I can see a problem for the guy when his career ends.
It's all well and good saying he should go and enjoy his life but that's the same mentality that left Gazza like he is and killed George Best.

It's quite clear to me that stepping back into the ring would be a huge mistake. I said after the Pacquiao fight that he should 100% retire before he gets badly or permanently hurt.
I hope his family and friends do the right thing and do everything possible to make sure he stays retired.

Its just shy of nine weeks since Hatton-Pacquiao. Ricky looks pretty heavy in the clip, heavier than he normally is when he's out of training!
IMO, he did not sound too convincing when pressed on the issue about a comeback. I'm not so sure if Ricky thinks he's heart is in it anymore? He has already said his family was in bits after the Pacquiao so he has that to think about aswell. Must be hard for him, but losing is part of Boxing!
If he does box again, he's going to have to put some serious work in the gym over a period of three months becasue he will have some weight to shift, no doubt about that!
A guy like Freddy Roach would not stand for Ricky being in such condition at the start of a training camp!
Akxtinguish
07-01-2009, 04:38 PM
I think if he does fight it should be a farewell for the Mancunians with a soft-hitting opponent (now would have been a good time to bring Malignaggi in) who doesn't end up hurting the guy.
It's the kind of fight that wouldn't be acceptable DURING a career but is reasonable for a last fight.
At the end of the day he was a huge fighter in the North, and among the biggest in the UK as a whole.
Sure, I would have liked to have watched Hatton-Khan or Hatton-Witter, but sometimes it just doesn't happen and I think he should only take those fights if he intends to continue boxing, and not as a farewell.

I agree
He lives badly
You can tell he is a excessive drinker / junk food eater
But boxing meant that he still had to have a period of discpline and training
Without that - when his boxing career ends - he has got nothing to discpline himself for
And unlike your average guy - he dosent have to stay sober to go to work everyday
He is a rich man - which mean he has got all day and every day to drink himself stupid
The future looks bleak for Hatton
10 years from now he might be a GAZZA type figure
With jennifer and the (future) kids having left him for his drunken ways
