I respect any person who dedicates themselves to a sport... especially one as unpopular as tennis! He might have the charisma of a lampost but no one can doubt the dramatic improvement he's made over last couple of years. He is the only person in the UK competing at Wimbledon, which shows the intense pressure the guy is under, even Henman had Rusedski as a back up. In truth the majority of people hate him because he's not English

there was another interview with him about boxing in which he went into much greater depth and was talking about his favorite fights. He also stated that Secondsout.com was his favorite website.

John Mcenroe is also a big boxing fan - every match he does commentary to he references something from boxing.

Because he's Scottish and he had a pop at the English football team?

You don't need to even reply, figures.

ACCORDING to Britain’s top tennis star Andy Murray, Muhammad Ali is probably the greatest sportsman ever. The #10 seed at Wimbledon, which begins on Monday June 23, says boxing is his favorite sport. Read on for the inside scoop on Andy Murray’s love for prizefighting…

Tennis great Jimmy Connors was a huge Ali supporter and would “drive all over” to watch The Greatest’s closed-circuit TV title fights in the 1960s and 1970s.

Boris Becker and Roger Federer are personal friends of Wladimir Klitschko, as was Guillermo Vilas of his countryman, the late Carlos Monzon of Argentina. Andre Agassi’s dad was an Olympic boxer for Iran. So what is Murray’s connection to boxing?

“It’s my favourite sport outside of tennis,” says the 20-year-old from Dunblane, Scotland, who counts Alex Arthur and Amir Khan as friends.

“I don’t really know why I became a fan. I started watching when I was 14 and since then I watched all boxing that’s on TV.

“It’s all I really look at on the internet, and all the fights that are coming up.”

Murray has attended five boxing events in Scotland and also entered the ring with Khan at his third pro fight. Last October, during the Bangkok tournament in Thailand, Andy even spent the day training in Muay Thai.

The two-time ATP tournament winner who has career wins over Federer, Andy Roddick, Nikolay Davydenko and Tommy Haas, explains the appeal of boxing.

“I quite like the big fights in Vegas. They get, obviously, great crowds. Coming to the ring to the music, there’s a lot of psychology involved. I guess it’s kind of similar to tennis, for each opponent that you face, you can decide whether to defend or attack. If they are more open to right hands, you can throw left hooks. Similar to tennis, where if the guy has a weaker forehand, you’re going to play to that more. There’s a lot of comparisons between the two sports, so I think that’s why I like it.”

Andy’s older brother Jamie, who won the Wimbledon mixed doubles championship this year with Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, added, “It [Andy’s boxing interest] was kind of random. Anything that’s on TV, he [Andy] will sit down and watch it.

“I don’t really understand any of it other than you try to knock the guy down but he’s telling me all the guys’ best punches or what he’s looking to do and all the strategy.”

Before important matches, Murray will draw additional motivation by watching boxing videos, though not necessarily actual fights. “I prefer listening to guys like Ali. That’s inspiring. It’s more the things that they went through, the way that they were. That’s what I really enjoy watching before I play or nights before my matches.

“I loved watching Roy?Jones. I watched his last fight against Anthony Hanshaw – he was fighting pretty defensively, much slower than he used to. But when he was at his best he was unbelievable. Now I love watching Floyd Mayweather, even though a lot of people don’t like him. They think he’s boring, and fights too defensively. But the object of boxing is to hit your opponent and not get hit. And he hits opponents five, six times more than they hit him.

“Mayweather’s not a knockout artist, but he’s the best boxer to watch. He doesn’t really care what people think, he just wants to win regardless of how it looks.

“Very few boxers are able to do that because it can become sort of a macho thing and they want to throw loads of punches. But Mayweather always stays cool under pressure. I also like Ricky Hatton.”

Interestingly, the 6ft 1in Murray’s varied playing style sort of parallels Mayweather’s versatile skills as a welterweight.

“Almost everyone plays the same these days, but Andy can do different things, like slice and then hit for power.” says one of his boyhood coaches Emilio Sanchez. “He can come to net, or retrieve or hit on the run. Other guys don’t know what to do with all that.

“When you’re playing against guys who are really consistent, you have to find three or four ways to win points, and not just with your serve,” says Murray of his multi-dimensional arsenal. As a devout boxing fan, what would Murray do of there was a major fight in the US with one of his favourite fighters taking place during Wimbledon?

“The Mayweather-[Arturo] Gatti fight was on live around Wimbledon time two years ago. I remember I got up like at three in the morning to watch it. I couldn’t miss that one. The re-broadcast was on again recently on ESPN and I watched it again.” Andy’s favourite boxing film and book? “Will Smith in Ali. I don’t really read too much, but my favourite boxing web site is Secondsout.com, if that helps [smiles].”

And, just out of curiosity, who would be the ATP Tour heavyweight champion? “Someone like Ivan Ljubicic [6ft 4in, 195lbs] looks like he’s quite dangerous. You know, bald head, he’s quite strong, a muscular guy. I’d probably say him.”

He said it in a joke man. Henman was jopking to him by laughing at the fact Scotland were not in the world cup so he cant support anyone and he replied I'll just support whoever is playing you guys. The exact same sort of banter we all use regularly with our mates, especially regarding footy. Even the fella who was hosting that day said it was all just a laugh.

I dont recall anyone from Scotland going crazy about Henman laughing coz Scotland were not in the world cup (coz we knew it was a joke ) ;)

Why? I consider myself first and foremost English but I'm also a very proud holder of a Britsh passport as well. Your arguement is a baseless generalisation and reflects this sense of paranoia that Scots seem to feel whenever someone vaguely brings up, or for that matter touches on, anything related to national identity. No-one hates the Scots en mass (or at least the majority of rational people don't)- the only reason this opinion ever gets voiced is due to the unsilent minority spouting crap.

Can't argue with that at all, I will always class myself as Scottish but don't deny to be British. I am just pointing out in comparison Henman received much more support throughout his career - Murray received a different kind of pressure, instead of wanting him to win (in the way Henman was treated) the majority of England fans would be just as happy/happier to see him fail. The amount of English Nadal "fans" that turned out for last years quarters demonstrates that perfectly.....

Can't argue with that at all:lol:. As for the people slating the Welsh- I'll point out that growing up in a place like Bristol you see more than your fair share of Welsh people around; after all, they are only just across the bridge. Having come into contact with plenty of Welsh people, although it pains me to say it, if I'm being honest I'd say they are more easy going and less pent up than the English are.

Also, on the subject of Andy Murray- isn't this a boxing forum? Just a thought. In fairness to the guy, apparently when he did that interview in which he slated the English national footy team, the reporter as good as set the guy up and then sensationalised Murray's comments beyond what they were originally intented as - a harmless bit of banter. Lighten up people (apart from the dude who's mate was beat up, you have a reason to dislike the dudes who did that but not the Welsh as a whole).

Murray is fucking great.

He has that winning mentality that everyone should respect. So much passion, drive and determination and he deserves everything he will achieve in the game.

Most of the haters are English people who don't like the fact that a Scot will become the first Brit for many years to win a grand slam and that "tiger tim" didn't quite have the bottle or talent to do it.

Murray is sound, just a normal guy, great player aswell, have followed his career for years and he has improved big time since Wimbledon last year, love watching him play, the US Open was fanastic viewing as was his ATP Masters seires win against Djokovic in Cincinatti(sp?) last year

Sportswise for me i go for Football-Boxing-Golf-Tennis in that order both watching and doing.

Took this from his bio from his own website which he's written himself. Seems like a sound pound, especially the bit about the boxing.

There's some pics meant to be in this which he has commented on;

Hey guys

We’ve decided to update this bit now for the new website.

So, the birthday stays the same; I was born on the 15th May 1987 in Glasgow. You’ve probably read that I spent most of my early life in a little place called Dunblane in Scotland.

Still got family living up there, so it still feels like home to me. I’ve got my own place in London now; fine by me as it’s close to where I train.

I started playing tennis very early, around the age of three. I definitely remember having a mini-racquet when I was two: a bright green thing with multi-coloured strings. Probably still a decent racquet for someone like Treacle.

Here's me and Jamie in the back garden at home, looking pretty good.

We got on well most of the time, but we were kind of competitive from an early age at most things....

(pic of him and his brother wrestling on a bouncy castle.)

Don't worry, ref stepped in to stop the fight....

So, I used to knock sponge balls off the wall till my mum got fed up with it and got us a Swingball for the back garden. Swingball’s pretty good work, and we played where we could...

That's us on a beach in France, with Kelly. She was from our campsite. Hello Kelly, if you're reading...

Jamie was well into his Wimbledon stuff, but you’ll have to read the biography on his website for that…

He’s a good player too; he was one of the top players in the world at under 12 level. He was pretty much the no. 3 in Europe (under-12), behind Nadal and Gasquet. Even beat Gael Monfils in his first tournament abroad. Not bad work.

Back to me.

I’ve always been a stylish kind of guy, and I think this Bart Simpson jumper proves that....

I'm about six in that photo I think...

OK, so this is me a few years after the Bart jumper, smashing one down the line...

Not sure if you know this but I played a lot of football when I was a kid.

I think it’s really important kids have the chance to try loads of stuff, and we were lucky like that.

Glasgow Rangers were interested in me, but It was always going to be tennis for me, even though my granddad played for Hibs. I love the fact that it’s just you and your opponent on a tennis court; I guess that’s why I love boxing too.

So, six years on from the Bart Simpson jumper and I’ve finally got some clothes that look decent.

That's me in my own kit after winning the Orange Bowl in Florida.

When I was 15, I left Scotland to train at the Sanchez Casal academy in Barcelona; It was getting harder and harder to push myself at home, so it was the right move for me.

I met Carlos at Sanchez, and we’re still pretty good friends. You can learn more about him here, or read his blogs here. Spain was great for me, apart from meeting Carlos.

I guess it all started picking up when I was 17 in 2004. I won the US Open boys title when I beat Sergiy Stakhovsky.

He took it pretty well…

Me and Jamie got to the semi-finals in the doubles too. Good effort from us.

I won the BBC Young Sports Personality as well. Flew back from a tourney in Spain for that one. Remember getting to the hotel with about 30 mins to get changed, but got stuck in the bathroom. Guy from reception had to bust the lock with a knife to get me out. Quality effort.

Made it to the red carpet in the end...

Er....

...less said about the suit the better huh?

So, I got called up for the Davis Cup squad also that year. Didn’t play, but that was a good moment.

Picked up a few Backgammon lessons from Tim.

Actually turned Pro in 2005, and made my debut in Davis Cup debut, which made me the youngest guy to ever represent Great Britain.

Me and David Sherwood beat Erlich and Ram in the doubles rubber. Bit of an upset, so that felt good…

That’ll do for my biography; everything else is quite recent.

You can find out lots of other tennis info about me on the site. There’s stuff on my schedule, my results and stuff, so have a good look around.

Thanks to everyone who has supported me so far, and if you’re thinking of supporting me as of now, good effort from you!

19 year old scot in not supporting england shocker...

I assume you support scotland in the football?

I support all British teams in pretty much everything, England first obviously. I have Irish and Scottish lineage and him not supporting the England football teams isn't the reason I dislike him so much (although wearing a paraguay shirt on the day we played them didn't do him any favours).

It is things like his awful performances in anything "team" orientated, the Olympics he was absolutely awful and even said himself he had an unprofessional attitude coming into the games (ie. didn't care) and surprise, surprise he actually pulled out of the Davis cup. His comments about Greg Rusedski when he talked about coming back for the Davis cup just a few days after he hinted he might try to come back were completely unneeded and classless. The guy's attitude really gets me, his anti-Englishness is probably an act but I hate that kind of behaviour anyway...so it doesn't do him any favours but isn't the soul or main reasons why I dislike him.

You don't like him because he doesn't compete well in a team???

The reason I love boxing and enjoy tennis is because they are 2 of the few sports where a competitor is required to 'man up'... nowhere to hide... mono et mono! In a few years I'm sure you'll see him giving his all in the Davis cup but at the moment he has to win a major first and foremost, nothing else will matter, and shouldn't!! Rusedski's an erse and as it's been said earlier Murray shoots from the hip.. they asked his opinion and he gave it. If you're going to dislike the guy at least be honest for the reason you do

Honestly dude , you really support Scotland if we're palying ?

I'm a unionist , shit my family is only 3 generations away from Yorkshire anyway, but in sport its fun to make a bit out of the old divide.

Its down to the peculularity of the UK if you're in Scotland you have to accept an English bias on things like the BBC so we make up for it by doing things like ...wearing a Paraguay shirt when you play them etc.

Does it mean we fuckin hate you ? No. Its just our way of getting back a little bit. Honestly you try growing up listening to Motson and co slagging us off at every opportunity and see if you don't feel like having a little dig back.

Lol like I said, it doesn't help him any that he said that shit about England but this isn't the main reason for my dislike and in earnest if that's all he said I would only route against him for fun. I do genuinely support England, Ireland and Scotland cause of family ties (not so much Wales but would prefer them to win then a non-GB team)...altho I admit that I laugh and take the piss out of Scotland just for being so bad at football.

As for the comments about "manning up" from the previous poster, I could give a fuck...it's nothing to do with that. The guy has no class and shows a complete lack of profesionalism when it comes to representing Great Britain, he doesn't want to represent GB to the best of his ability and trashes people trying to get in the team weeks before the event so I do not support him as a British athlete, simple as for me. Like me, love me or hate me for it you aren't going to change my mind pretending that I only hate him because he is Scottish, why would I, like I said before I have family from there.

No, you thick bastard. Your comment about saying "I'm not racist cause I have black mates", is ridiculous because I am in part Scottish, I just consider myself English because I was born there. Hence it would be like saying I'm not racist against black people because I'm part white, part black. Do you need me to break it down even simpler for you because I feel I'll need a translator who speaks fluent retard to dumb it down even further.

Only joking, believe in Jesus...

There is no proof needed, I am part Scottish, the insult was there because you are indeed stupid and as such I really don't want you to cover religion. Especially since I am sporting "Buddy Christ" in the image but I imagine the relevance of that will escape you (you can use Google now if you like to "prove me wrong"). so fucking what , he is a sportsman not a singer/dancer , he is not in the business of having bags of charm/charisma etc

The charisma thing cracks me up, how many sportsman have great personalities and charisma?

Anyone actually gonna try and tell me that Henman, Beckham, Shearer, Michael Owen, Joe Calzaghe or any of a whole list of successful Brit sportsmen have charisma? :-(

Come on mate get that chip off your shoulder!

On the question of the fans? I was simply generalising. When I said "the same people" I meant the nation of England. However, my comments were taken literally by some, & it actually made for a funny argument, so I left it alone instead of ruining the fun of course!

As for Alan Carr, hes always bitching about Scotland. Some may laugh, I choose not to. Why? cos I dont believe its harmless fun from the nasty poof, I get the impression that he has a deep resentment of all things scottish.
& when my nation is run down again & again from some unfunny english nasty wee arse bandit(why are all poofters nasty btw?) then I choose not to laugh, I instead take offence. Im not like many scots, I dont laugh at people who take my country or my people down, if its supposed to be a joke or not.

If loving my own country & not laughing at english fags who try to take us down is seen as "having a chip on my shoulder" then guilty as charged.

Fuck everyone who has a problem with Scotland or our people in any shape or form. Thats how I roll. Anyone got a problem with that? Then theres an ignore option in the user CP. Simple.

It really pisses me off how the BBC won't show pro Boxing. To think I pay over a hundred pounds a year for a broadcasting network I don't even watch.... EVER!!! and they won't even show live Boxing.
