This is a great highlight displaying Chavez's skills. He is one of the better combination punchers I have ever seen, the way he mixes his shots to body and head is absolutely seamless. Beautiful combination's.

Was there a better combination puncher to body and head than prime Julio Cesar Chavez?

If there are any, there are very few of them. One of the great things in watching Chavez work is how expertly and accurately he threw his combinations, and how he often seemed to know exactly what to throw to open up holes in his opponent's defense and then exploit those holes.

This may be partly because I'm distracted at the moment, but I can't think of anyone offhand who worked the whole body better.

Robinson and Tyson for me are better combination punchers to head and body. It's hard to say because it's just the way you look at it that determines your opinion. For pure skill switching from head to body Tyson is one of the best. And Robinson with the caclulated attacks whereas the bodyshots open up the head etc, amazing. For flurrying to head and body (switching) while boxing, Whittaker and Buchanan are very good. And combo punching to head and body, Roberto Duran anyone? But Chavez is clearly one of the very best in this regard, i don't think he stands alone though. Also for a sustained body attack, Carlos Ortiz.

Tyson in his prime. I agree with Teeto, Ortiz was a fantastic body puncher.

But I have no problem with anyone picking Chavez. The first left hook he dropped Taylor with in their rematch in a great example of his underrated head punching. A quick pivot and BANG.

Some people still think Chavez was one dimensional :rofl He was a truly nuanced aggressive fighter, not a 'slugger' by any means, and I pretty much agree with the thread starter. If not no.1 then in the top five for sure.

Yeah i agree, his most accurate shot was always the right hand upstairs, his best shot for me.

Chavez is certainly one of the best Ive seen.

Id give a shout to Wilfredo Gomez, Olivares and Mike McCallum.

There's the answer there. Pre-Sanchez anyway. He was great afterwards but less methodical, more wild (i.e Pintor fight)

Tyson? The combination of a body shot and then an uppercut that he put together was sickening.

Chavez is as good a pick as any Id say, its hard to say who is thee best if there is actually such a thing but JCC is absolute top tier in this regard. No doubt.

Ruben Olivares, Alexis Arguello, Roberto Duran.

Chavez is on the same level as these guys, but not necessarily better than them.

Yeh that right hand of Chavez never missed did it, nothing flash about julio just repetitive precision punching, left jab/left body/right cross, his opponents all new what was coming but Julio's footwork was majestic & yer just could'nt get out the way. Just ask Meldrick Taylor.

Roberto Duran also with his double left 2 the body then left 2 the head finished with a right cross.

McCallam/Gomez/Nelson/Hearns/Tyszu...............................

Correct, Wilfredo Gomez:good i forgot 2 add him 2 me list, jeez there's so many divided by so little. That Pintor fight was pure controlled frenzy from both ov em, Lupe Pintor, another fabulous exponent ov close quarter combo punching:yep

Jeezus, he was fuckin brilliant:smoke there was no escape, great ring general at cutting down escape.

THAT punch that straightened up Taylor in the 12th that lead 2 the TKO could be heard all around the Hilton ballroom, i'll never forget it ("CRUMP" it sounded like live) & well worth the nightmare 22 hr flight over, I recall Bob Sheridon commentating & saying 2 Taylor in the 12th "Don't get cute with this guy just box" easier said than done:yep

Johnny Tapia was pretty good at it, though he couldn't punch hard enough to break guys down with it the way guys like Chavez, Olivares, Duran could.

Saldivar as well when he cut loose, though he often favoured sharpshooting single straight lefts.

Definitely ... he can threw punches in a very short space but with perfect accuray and an amazing power....

For me, JCC is one truly rare boxer who was a coming forward style fighter but smart, technically gifted and master ring generalship.....

One of a kind in the sport

The best offensive fighter of all time for me

wow Chavez had great combos, just an ATG

Igual como Mexico nomas hay solo un Chavez!!!

I wish his physically gifted son would try to be himself and not his dad.

I agree with everybody.

Although I don't think Chavez should be highlighted as "the" greatest at putting clusters of punches to body and head, I wouldn't say there was anybody better than him at it either. That highlight is one of the more impressive highlights I've seen, and although I still think he had a padded record, his skills cannot be denied.

I think Zarate deserves a mention here. Maybe not quite as compact as some of the others mentioned, but with his power, his shots to the body and head were hard to withstand when delivered in combination.

It's Wilfredo Gomez for me...better combination puncher to the head and body and with superlative power. He didn't have to hit a guy as much as Chavez did.

If you really watch Chavez work, then he always or almost always. Starts with a jab, a straight right, then finishes off with a left hook to the boby. Over and over again. With amazing effectiveness.

Salvador Sanchez mixed up the attack very well & had a very effective body attack himself.

Great video. Bobby Czyz and Ferdie Pacheco were spot on. I remember reading on this site how him and Ricky Hatton would have been a tear up. NO WAY. He would have shredded Hattonīs face within 4 rounds with that accuracy. I really canīt see anybody at 135 to 140 since he retired beating him. That includes Floyd, Tzsyu, Mosley and Pacquiao. Chavez had the chin to withstand their shots and the accuracy to land on the inside unlike any other fighter these modern greats ever faced.
