One that springs to mind is Sugar Ray Lenoard
There was no WBU title for him to pick up and make a few easy defences
He had to fight the undefeated Wifredo Bentiez and became the first man to beat him and stop him
W TKO 15
Thats how you become a real champion
One of Franks ******s stars would never be able to take such a proper route in their first world title attempt
Lenoard had a great first World title win - to become Champion................

I think a great world title winning performance has to be Buster Douglas over Tyson. Many try and play it down with Tyson hadn't trained properly, wasn't in shape, etc, but this is PROFESSIONAL boxing, and it wasn't Douglas' fault whatever condition Tyson was in. He still had to get in there and fight him...
And I think it also detracts from the fact that Douglas boxed superbly that night and fought the fight of his life whilst being a ridiculously massive underdog and carrying the burden of the very recent passing of his mother. Great performance, even if it was a "one night only" thing, it was still an amazing effort on his part.

Oliver McCall has sparred hundreds of rounds with Mike Tyson
He fought Lennox Lewis twice
The best fighter he said he ever been in the ring with
was Buster Douglas
McCall lost a una 10 round decsion
He said Douglas had a amazing jab
The Tyson win was not a fluke - Douglas was undisplined thats why he was never great
But he was a very talented fighter

British: Turpin over Robinson edges Honeyghan over Curry McGuigan/Pedroza and Stracey/Napoles
All-time Turpin is in with a shout, but I would go with Ali over Foreman.

Naz V Steve Robinson deserves a mention
Because of the manner Naz done it in
Moved up for his first fight at featherweight and went to the Champions home town and bashed up the long reigning champ with his hands down by his bollocks

I'd have Turpin-SRR first followed by Stracy-Napoles and Honey-Curry (take your pick for the order) but I think Barry Mc-Pedroza is way behind those 3 fights.

(Shouldn't be laughing too much, Robinson comes from the same 'hood as yours truly).

I understand the logic, Pedroza clearly was an accident waiting to happen, but he had been that way for a couple of years, and no one pushed him over the edge, until McGuigan came along.

No-one can deny Sugar Ray Lenoard had a tough challenge in his fist world title attempt
I read before that Wifredo Benetiz is considered one of the most naturally talented boxers that has ever lived

Benitez was excellent, no doubt, but stepping into the ring as a Challenger against a reigning World Middleweight and former Undefeated World Welterweight Champ, with one defeat in 140 fights; and was on a 90 odd fight, winning streak going in, is even tougher.....
