After watching UFC 100, it’s official. Boxing is done.
You hear me? Finito. Thanks for keeping the seat warm, now please step aside. Actually Boxing, why don’t you just leave the room altogether? Because Mixed Martial Arts is moving in, my friend.

Now, I’m not going to get into personality comparisons, because with guys like Marciano, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Hagler, Leonard and Tyson, boxing wins hands down … for now. But that’s just because it’s been around forever and the UFC isn’t even 20 years old.
But as far as pure action, excitement, athletic skill, intelligence (I said it) and safety (yeah, I went there too), MMA wins hands down.
Let’s break it down, shall we?
Action/Excitement
MMA is primal. It’s war. It is the ultimate test of manhood. Two men enter, one man leaves as the clear-cut winner. Every now and then, a fight comes down to a split decision and the judges pick a winner that I might not agree with, but there’s never been an outright baloney decision just to set up a rematch. Can’t say the same for boxing.
Plus, there are three rounds in a fight (five in a title fight), so there’s an urgency to win quickly as opposed to sticking and moving for 12 rounds. Any shot you take could be your last. It’s a modern day gladiator competition.
It also really epitomizes all of those typical sports cliches like, “he wanted it more” or “he showed more heart.” Don’t get me wrong, I love all sports (and I promise I’ll start watching hockey next season, so stop harassing me). But I think that the ability to defeat someone who’s literally trying to beat you into submission shows a lot more heart than getting someone to swing and miss at a curveball. Don’t get me wrong, that is exciting, but it’s just not the same.
Athletic skill
C’mon now? Do I even need to go there?
Boxing involves two men punching each other with huge, padded gloves. MMA involves … well, everything. Punching, kicking, wrestling, grappling, short range, long range … and you can win by knockout or submission. That means you have to be an all-around athlete to be good. Put a great puncher against a great all-around athletic fighter and I don’t see good things happening for the puncher.
Intelligence
People have this notion that all MMA guys are just meatheads who love to beat each other’s brains in, yet they’ll argue that boxing is a thinking man’s sport. Really?
Let’s go back to the punching, kicking and grappling that I mentioned earlier. To enter a competition like this without a finely tuned game plan is like being a soldier, having your superior hand you a pistol and saying, “The bad guys are somewhere up in those mountains. Go get ‘em, cowboy!” You’re going to want to know how many bad guys there are, where they are and if you need something more substantial to take them down, like a machine gun, grenade or bazooka, right? So why do people assume that these athletes are just idiots who like to fight?
Safety
If you’re not sitting down already, you better now. I’m about to drop some knowledge!
OK, in boxing, you go until you knock the other guy out to the point where he can’t answer a 10 count or gets TKO’d (knocked down 3 times in a round). In MMA, you go until you get knocked out (as in unconscious), choked out (again unconscious), tap out to a submission move (basically give up) or can’t “intelligently defend yourself” (the referee stops it because your opponent is basically beating the crap out of you and you’re basically just taking it).
How’s MMA safer? Because once you get knocked silly, the fight’s over. In boxing, you’re getting your brains rattled for 10-12 rounds and no one’s stopping the fight even if you’re obviously getting pummeled. That’s not good for your long-term health. Also, the fact that the guy hitting you is wearing padded gloves makes a lot of fighters eat a couple of shots just so they can get in some of their own. Very few MMA fighters employ this strategy because, since you’re getting hit with a very light glove (basically a fist), you might not be able to eat even one shot before getting knocked out.
So, I’ve tried to keep this list as brief and basic as possible. I won’t even get into how boxing is full of shady promoters that set up their guys with easy fights just to keep their belts.
But one more reason why the UFC is now boxing’s daddy?
If you set up either one of the Klitschkos ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) against Brock Lesnar in a “champion versus champion, anything goes” fight, Brock would quickly take boxing boy down and turn his face into something that resembled raw hamburger. Then he would flip off the crowd ([Only registered and activated users can see links]), insult a sponsor and say that he’s going home to get on top of his wife ([Only registered and activated users can see links]).
OK, so it’s not perfect.

MMA is the biggest joke known to man. Your sport is a joke when a former WWF wrestler can go on to become the champ of the UFC in a matter of months. That right there tells you everything you need to know about it.:deal That and the fact that a 50 year old Ray Mercer koed a UFC champ in 9 seconds in a MMA macth. These clowns don't want it not after these recent events. I wish they would try and bash boxing with that joke of a so called sport.

And this guy seems to forget how Ray "Past It" Mercer KO'd a former champ of theirs recently!!! Idiot!!!

Im a massive fan of both, they are 2 separate sports, both are alive & well & both can be entertaining as well as dull at times.

I actually feel embarassed for the guys that are a fan of one of these sports & hate the other & try find every little thing wrong with the other sport to make themselves feel better.... grow the fuck up, if you dont like it, dont watch it, stop acting like little fucking 5 yr old girls.

It's a sport where a guy intentionally punched an unconscious man lying defenceless on his back, knowing he was unconscious.

It's a sport where the majority of its fans shrugged at this action and said hey, maybe he knew he was unconscious, but the rules say it's ok.

It's a sport that will never be superior to the sweet science to anyone but the kind of people who are unconcerned by unconscious defenceless men being purposely attacked.

Exactly! That's why most MMA fans hate Brock. As someone who has grappled for years and years. You don’t stop someone trying to take you down with a punch. You will most likely just hit the top of the head and break your hand. Why boxers think that punching is such an effective way to avoid a double leg is beyond me. Its like your immagination gets carried way. You sprawl then you punch simple and effective. In your minds eye an devistaign flurry of punches may be the best way to avoide a double leg but in reality its not.

You miss the point. I find mat work as boring as you do to wathc and I'm a fucking black belt in Judo. I'm not a fan of MMA. I actually fought for rule changes in Judo becasue it was begining to look too much like MMA and not enouhg like traditional Judo. My side won the argument by the way.

But I do realize that they are structured better than boxing. And there is a lot to be said of a sport where the fighters aren't allowed to duck each other, there are only a few weight classes, and only one champoin. I really wish boxing woudl do the same.

The UFC ranking really suck but everything else is good. The only problem i have with lesnar being a champ is he only needed one win to get a title shot. Yes he was a WWE wrestler but before that he was a real wrestler. The UFC heavyweights are pretty weak right now with couture-noguiera being past prime and arlovski and sylvia no longer with ufc.

That's why lesnar is the king right now. It's kinda like the klits in boxing. the division is so weak that nobody can beat them.

You got these mother fuckers who ain't never been in a fight and think they can just break down the sport...

This guy is as bad as some of the posters on this site...

They don't know SHIT about boxing, and just see two men in the ring throwing punches at each other...

And the guy says that some people try and take punches to land one...

Ain't nobody does that shit...unless they're garbage and don't move...

I didn't see Tyson takin punch after punch to get to his targets, he moved...

I would love to see this pussy ass mother fucker in the ring...

Please that was a shot to shit Tyson. I'm taling about the prime Tyson who has excellent head movement defense one shot KO power and speed to burn. He would be too much for these unskilled bums because the fight would never make it to the ground. As wide open as these guys come in he would land on them like rain on a tin roof.:deal
I wasnt talking about the tyson-lewis fight. I was talking about the fucking brawl duing the press conference. What happened? Did they counter each others attempted takedowns with pinpoint accurate shots?

Hell no. They wrestled each other to the ground and Tyson bit Lewis' leg. Thats what happens. Two of the greatest boxers of their generation got into a real fight and it went to the ground in seconds. If someone wants to tackle you there is very little you can do.

I get where you're coming from, but you see...most people don't know how to box.

You wouldn't break your hand because you would already be lower than your opponent and likely you would throw an uppercut or a staight and move...

And it works because sometimes you got fighters who wanna smother you, like a wrestler, and you pop them and move and they don't got time to make the adjustments or hold you...

Lesner was the NCAA heavyweight champion. Against any boxer I have to give him the edge. But it is a joke that he can just come in and be given a title shot. But then I'm alwasy reminded of Ali-Wepner. But then you see the irnory that Ali-Wepner isn't that bad becasue Wepner stood no chance.

I disagree with Lesnar being able to beat any boxer.

If he can beat any boxer, then you're saying he can't be beat because nobody is going to out wrestle him.

If anything, his kryptonite would be a powerful striker that can move because he comes in squared up, has horrendous stand up, and he needs to get you on the ground to win.

So why wouldn't you give any boxer a chance when really they would have the only chance as long as they could avoid the takedown OR get up.

Unless you really believe that Lesnar is the greatest fighter of all time.

Vitor Belfort was krpytonite to many fighters in the past that outweight him considerbly because they couldn't keep up with his speed and his punches were sharp, but this is a guy who was incredibly one dimensional, didn't have great movement and didn't amount to shit at boxing.

If you got handspeed, and some size, and you can hit hard enough to knock a man out, if you hit and move, you can beat Brock.

What makes people think that these MMA guys are unbeatable are the lack of quality strikers because guys that are good at striking take up boxing.

They've been bred for it...it's in their blood and they're not about to abort it.

I didn't say he cant be beat. I said I would give him the edge. I dont care who it is I'll put my money on the champoin amature wrestler over the boxer every time and I'd be a rich man in the end. IMHO we are talking a 70-30 favorite here, I'll put my money on those odds every time and twice on sundays.

That's your opinion.

I've seen Tyson knock people out with one punch that were 230 lbs and ripped and better athletes than anybody I've seen in MMA.

So, yeah, I would put my money on a wrestler against a shitty fighter that calls himself a boxer anyday, but no way would I bet on a guy that's ascared to get hit against an elite boxer.

Look I like boxing more than MMA but Mercer got choked out in 30 seconds by toughman Kimbo Slice in his only other MMA fight. Not to mention George Foreman became heavyweight champion of the world at 45 so Mercer knocking out Tim Sylvia(a stand up only fighter) at 50 doesn't exactly show me anything.

That been said, as far as which sport is better is simply anyone's own personal opinion and anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool.

In boxing, there are absolutely no restrictions, anybody can fight anybody.

In MMA, the best MMA organization in the world refuses to cross-promote and because of this true MMA fans are missing out on watching some of the best fights in the sport.

UFC has a monopoly on MMA, i'm not sure if thats a good thing or not.

In boxing, above 160 there are just as many weight classes as MMA. Boxing has alot of weight classes among the lighter weights because they are absolutely essential.

Also Lesner might beat the Klits in a anything goes fight and I do stress might but a prime Tyson beats any MMA fighter in history in a MMA match.

David Haye....."I've rolled around with MMA guys in the past - and even use British mixed martial artist James Zikic for sparring - and I know how hard it is to fight these guys," Haye said. "They are very physically strong and very dangerous in the clinch and on the ground. Those are two positions that pro boxers are not used to. Also, despite always starting on my feet with these guys, I was finding myself taken to the mat eight out of ten times. That gives me a two in ten chance of landing a punch and knocking my MMA opponent out."

But we're talking prime Tyson here so he'd do better than Haye, but to think Tyson would go never lose @ a sport he'd never specifically trained for is.....:nut

In boxing, there are absolutely no restrictions, anybody can fight anybody.

While technically true, it's a meaningless thing to say.

MMA fans get to see the matches they want with far more regularity than boxing fans because boxers dont have someone forcing them to fight the best. Absolutely no restrictions? The only difference is the fighters get to make their own restrictions. Pac fought ODLH at 147, but he refuses to fight Cotto at anything higher than like 143. That is a RESTRICTION. Fighters routinely force other fighters to wear the gloves they want them to wear, to get the ring size they want to have etc. etc. At least in MMA, you get the same gloves, you get the same size ring, and you don't get to rack up a bunch of unfair advantages at the negotiating table just because you are more popular.

I agree with some of the things you said.

If Fedor were to fight in the UFC, he'd be fighting under different rules than he'd be accustomed to be fighting in outside the UFC.

And no, MMA fans do not get to see the fights they want to see more regularly than boxing fans. How long did people want to see Couture/Fedor? Long time but never happened, Brock/Fedor may never happen either. Not to mention, Aoki will likely never fight Penn, Yamamoto never fought Faber. The bottom line UFC has a monopoly on the sport and the fights that hardcore fans want to see wont ever happen because the UFC refuses to cross promote. Instead we get Penn/Stevenson and Penn/Florian PPV's as well Lesnar/Mir or Silva/Leites, Silva/Cote.

The bottom line is in todays MMA landscape something like the Super Middleweight Tournament in boxing WOULD NEVER happen in MMA. Boxing is truly a global sport and this is why. 3 Fighters from different countries in Europe fighting 3 Americans across the globe.

And the same demands that you say the popular boxers place on others is exactly what Fedor does. UFC have had no problems signing guys like Noguiera, Wand, Rampage, Crocop and some of the other Pride fighters and yet the best in the world has these outrageous demands and along with the UFC's outrageous demands they arent even close to making a deal. And I seem to remember a few catchweight fights in MMA. And I also seem to remember MMA essentially creating a new weight class for their main attraction Gina Carano.

Thats the bottom line, in both sports. Its not an isolated problem that occurs in just boxing. It happens in MMA just as much. But at least in boxing, the popular fighters have to earn that title. In MMA, the popular fighters have everything handed to them on a silver platter.

We just had a boxing vs. MMA in 48 yr old Ray Mercer vs. 33 yr old ex UFC HW champion Tim Slyvia. We all know what happened with that so we know which sports is superior. Boxing! LOL.
