My friend asked me to got to a boxing gym he sometimes goes to,
I said sure. He suggested with spar a little (keep in mind that I've never had before in my life) Now I won't say I thought I was gonna be great, but I at least thought I could produce an alright showing for myself.

He then preceded to beat me for two rounds, and the only shot I really got in was a counter right hand ( I guess he felt a little confident and leapt in).

I always knew boxing was a difficult and tiring sport, but DAMN. after only two rounds my head was throbbing, I had a cut on my lip, and was tired as hell.

Props goes out there for all the people who make this sport as their living, because I sure as hell couldn't do this. :-( :good

Hahahaha. Been there mate. I remember we used to train our fuckin arses off just to enable ourselves to do a three round amateur bout, which were only 2 minutes long, and you were still felt like you been through a war after it. I'ts incomprehendable for to imagine what the pros go through to get fighting fit.

Good on you for getting in there, here's the next part.....Go Back! Haha.

I have no shame in admitting that I stepped inside a ring once.

In 1991.

My excuse is that it was with a prolific fighter not too far beyond their prime. I was asked to because I had the job of telling people how to do certain things, except fight. So I was asked how I thought I'd fare on 'their territory'.

So, in I got. I remember being hit twice (yes, all of twice). The next thing I remember was being propped up in the corner and coming around. Then vomiting for the next 20 seconds or so. I never got back in and never will (apart from which I'm far too old now).

For all I may criticise some boxers, I have utmost respect for them - no matter how good or bad they may be.

Put an ice compress on your head or at least a bag of frozen peas.

Nar i stopped boxing years ago, i didn't do anything of note like, but i was one of the hardest trainers in the gym, just because i luv boxing. I'm a better fanatic than a fighter CC, put it that way! I never used to use the headgear and that, maybe a few times, not a good idea is it?! Haha.

You'll be fine though, does you good!!

I can certainly appreciate how much energy and wind trying to box for even just a few moments takes. As a kid my friends and I used to put on the gloves and go out in the back yard. None of us lasted long before we were so gassed that another punch was impossible. Today, I take aerobic boxing bootcamp classes, which doesn't involve sparring, but does a lot of bag hitting, working with mits, jumping rope, etc. I still get tired before long, but its a great workout.

Respect goes out to everyone who ever stepped inside the ropes, even if for a short spar. It can be very daunting, even if you know you're in good hands. Just that confrontational aspect that you know it's time for a bit of a ruckus can prove a big mental step.

If you would like to know how fit you are, try sparring. Sure a bag can be hit all day, but try anticipating and tracking down a living and breathing target that mirrors your movements.

Nice thread this.

I don't think anyone who hasn't stepped between the ropes can possibly know just how difficult it can be.

There is a huge difference between even just a low-level amatuer and a guy off the street as far as speed, stamina, reflexes and co-ordination goes. And of course, the ability to fight.

As a guy just starting in the sport I often got the crap kicked out of me against the seasoned ams in sparring, and mostly they held back.

Once I got more experience, I did the same to guys just starting out. I suppose that's just the order of things.

Years ago, I used to spar with this Tae Kwan Do guy during my lunchtime, at a gym a block from my work. I would come back with a bloody nose and generally scuffed up. I got some pretty funny reactions from the coworkers.

Then I got old and tired of loose teeth (and root canals)... not too mention I just didn't have the make-up for doing that stuff everyday of the week.

Just punches, he was looking to MMA stuff at its very early stages. I hit way harder than him but he threw punches in bunches. Once, I knocked him cold as a cucumber off a punch I threw with no bad intentions. I had boxed quite a bit in my teens, all amateur crap so I was used to it and I was, dare I say, in immaculate shape. I fully admit I am and always was more of an athlete than fighter. But, oh, to be young again.

Boxing and other fighting sports. is a physicaly and mentaly demanding sport. My only experance was training for a smoker that never happened and my school offers a kickboxing calss that i took last year which has a lot of sparing.

Boxing was called the most difficult sport in some calculation determined by ESPN.

Sparring is difficult, exhausting, and painful, but necessary to improve.

Once you spar against a taller person with longer arms, you'll respect guys like Tyson, Frazier, Hatton, Qawi, etc...a lot more (or at least I did).

Boxing is the toughest sport out there, so everyone that gets in the ring gets my respect.

Did a bit of sparring when I was about 16 to 18 and it is not easy, you have all these grand plans, but when your in the ring it is a diferert story. You start throwing punches with your arms etc...
