View Full Version : "I wont be anyone's stepping stone!" Ricky Hatton

Guy
07-24-2009, 01:38 PM
Eric Gomez, Golden Boy's Vice President said that Juan Manuel Marquez is one boxer that Hatton has a lot of interest in fighting. If Hatton would have beaten Pacquiao back in May, Marquez was being lined up as the fall opponent for Ricky. If Marquez is able to pull off the major upset against Mayweather, Hatton would like to fight him.

"What he has told Richard Schaefer in the past is that if he ever comes back, he wants it to be a meaningful fight," Gomez said. "He doesn't want to be anybody's steppingstone. He has expressed interest that if Marquez can pull off the fight against Mayweather, he would want to fight Marquez. And Marquez has been wanting to fight him for a year now. That's a possibility." "I know that many fighters have been knocked out cold and they come back and they win titles. So you never know. Amir Khan (is one). You have guys like Arturo Gatti. How many times did he get knocked out? He came back and won big fights. So you can never count anybody out. There are guys that Ricky can still beat"...

He would be a great stepping stone for Khan to help him into the American spotlight or Ajose Olusegun/McKloskey kinda standard fighter.

No way. He needs a warm-up fight to see what he's still made of. Dont get greedy ricky.

JMM would stop him I've no doubt about that. If he wants to 'repair' his legacy, or whatever way you want to phrase it, by taking one more decent scalp before he hangs them up then diving head first into a fight with JMM is not the way to go about it.

I think even Hatton's army will seriously consider his credentials based on the Pacquiao showing, especially if he takes on JMM after beating PBF.

The Khan fight seems so logical. hatton is all about the money, and this is a biggest british fight in years if it takes off.

I think Khan or Bradley would be good options if Hatton decides to carry on. The last thing that Hatton needs at this stage in his career is a clever counterpuncher.

After the Pac fight Hatton has to be looking at the next level down for his opponents. Rather than the top P4P guys he should be trying for the best of 140 guys (if he decides to fight on).

Dan684
07-24-2009, 03:45 PM
Listen lads, this is how it'll go down. Floyd will beat juan (unfortunately) - Pac will wipe the floor with Cotto.
Pac-Floyd
Cotto licks his wounds and goes back for Mosely
Juan will take the big money spinner and dispatch of Hatton ( Its souns like Hatton does want this and juan would be daft not to take it)

Thing is....

We don't actually know what Hatton has. He was blasted out in two rounds. His footwork seemed decent enough and he hit Pac with a quality right hand, but the fact remains that he was up against a guy that was his stylistic worst nightmare.

The only thing that can be confirmed to have slipped is his punch resistance.

Marquez looked shaky against Diaz at times - who is a lesser puncher than Hatton.... but going by that form Hatton couldn't have taken the shots that Marquez hit Diaz (and Casa) with..... so logic suggests a close couple of rounds before Hatton is TKO'd again, as Ishy said.

He's living on another fucking planet if he thinks he's an appropriate opponent for JMM. I used to like Hatton, but in the last two years he's shown an absolute disregard for discipline and boxing intelligence, yet goes around talking shit like "remortgage your house and put the money on me" before getting wiped out in two rounds by a fucking Featherweight. If he wants to fight at the top level again - not that he will - he needs to work his way up. His days of cashing in on his fanbase are over.

Gaz what do you rec to my theory about JMM losing to Floyd then fighting Hatton. I actually think its a given :deal

I totally agree, Marquez isn't a big name and a loss against Mayweather(esp. a bad one) puts him with the rest of the top 140lbers who (I'd guess!!!) would all fancy a fight against Hatton.

Dan684
07-25-2009, 02:22 AM
Yep my thoughts exactly. Hatton will be licking his wounds around now and considering he gets beat against Floyd, he will see Marquez as the 'Elite fighter' who he may have his chance against. Personally I'd rather Hatton retire than fight Marquez as I see him getting beat. If he fights anyone for me he should have a final bow out and try and get Bradley over to the MEN. The atmosphere in there for Hatton fights is electric and I think he could do ok against Bradley. It'd be superb in my eyes if he was to take Bradleys belt in the MEN and then retire there and then in the ring afterwards.
If not Bradley then it would have to be Khan although I do not want to see it as its a lose lose for both fighters. Khan wins and he gets no respect for beating the Peoples champion, also Hatton gets ripped to shreds by those haters who will bring up what happened to Khan last year despite the fact he's come on leaps and bounds since. Hatton wins and Khan's career is effectively over

GazOC
07-25-2009, 02:31 AM
Yep, I think Bradley (if he wins his next fight) in the UK is the way to go if Hatton decides to continue. Its a winnable fight, its for a belt and I'm pretty sure that after Pac Hattons days being a American "casino fighter" are over unless the opponent is really exceptional.

Marquez would spark him IMO. All wrong, a counterpuncher with seemingly improving power up in weight. Not as quick as Pac, but quicker than Mayweather I'd predict.

Hatton has not lost it, he was just overrated as fuck to begin with. Handpicked opponents and a glass chin....hardly ideal prep for the level he was being touted at, now is it?:lol:

The tell tale signs that Hattons punch resistance was/is diminishing have been there for a while. His style meant he was never gonna fight (or at least stay at the top level) too far into his 30's. Vince Phillips and Kostya Tszyu both landed huge shots on Ricky and he took them OK but in the latter part of his career he was being hurt from guys like Lazcano and in the Collazo fight (which to be honest I thought Ricky lost but thats another thread) he was staggering aroung the ring. When he fought Urango his stamina was dire and again seemed to feel the shots much more than he used to. PBF Knocking him out (with help from the corner post but imho he was out cold before his head even hit that) was the straw that broke the camels back and he was officially damaged goods from ther on in. All in my humble opinion of course lol

What a ridiculous comment. Your previous ones were laughed off the board when it was pointed out that the comments weren't even from Hatton so now you're trying to backtrack and say "well I'm right anyway cos he shouldn't even be thinking of it". If Marquez loses to Mayweather (which he will unless PBF has seriously slipped in his time out) and wants to come back against a name fighter and Hatton can string a couple of wins together in the meantime it's certainly possible. I would like to see Hatton hang em up now, he has nothing left to prove to anyone. However, in the scenario I mentioned above, where else can Marquez make anywhere near as much money against such a beatable (at this stage) opponent?

Admittedly if Marquez beats Mayweather this fight would never happen as he'll be shooting straight for the Pac-Cotto winner, but if not I think it is a possibility.

You're not old. Anyway, Gaz, how do you fancy going to Pac v Cotto? I'm going to try and get a ticket.

i'm trying to get a couple of mates to go but I've been hijacked by some smart arse wanting to go to Thailand (yep, I know!!).

I fancy Pac for the fight but I could well be sub conciously baised because he made such easy work of Hatton. Who have you got for it?

I think Pac will knock him out late. I think Pac's handspeed will be too much for him and he will negate Cotto's boxing ability which is his main asset. Of course Miguel will always have a puncher's chance, but I can't look past Pacqiaou.

If you'd have said 18 months ago that Pac would KO Oscar and Hatton and start the betting favourite against Cotto.....

I know, crazy isn't it? 18 months is a long time in boxing, despite what Floyd would have us believe.

^ That goes for anyone else for that matter. Be good to see some of you. Could be a classic fight.

i'll pass thanks, infact i'd rather staple my bollocks a tree than spend a day or 2 'hanging' with you. No offence.

Am i the only person that interprets "i wont be anyones stepping stone" as Hatton saying i wont lose to these young fighters, rather than i wont fight them ?

:lol:There was a really old tread bumped on the general the other day from this time last year. Roach was quoted on it saying something to the effect of 'we're not staying at 135, we'll stop ODLH next then beat Hatton and then campaign at 147'. Reading through it with hindsight was so funny. Posts to the effect of 'STFU' were commonplace!
