Is it just me or are these figures quite impressive for a fight that wasnt that big and was hardly advertised and was shown on ITV4, it shocked me but maybe reading "boxing is a niche sport" so often has got lodged in my head.
read this in the frank ****** section of the sun if you were wondering - and yes he did have his usual pop at another fightrer - this week Carl Froch and David Haye

******s a real peice of work, this week he's managed to have a pop at Haye and Froch (who he doesn't promote) and big up Khan and Cleverly (who he does promote).
The rag needs to wise up and get a decent boxing column rather than just giving ****** a free platform to gloat and whinge.

I'd be very surprised if it got anywhere near 60,000 in reality. That figure must be horse-shit.
I didn't even know it was on ITV4 until the night.

Yes, I don't belive those numbers, but we can use them for the various ESPN / Bunce campaigns if they are true. The figures aren't out on BARB yet. These are the previous week figures for ITV4 - nothing got 600k

It was on in our club in Wales. A lot of people interested in quite an exciting fight. Lots watch the boxing if it's on around 8-11pm and not ppv.
The news is getting around about Cleverly now.

I don't know why people are so surprised, try flicking through the freeview channels or even sky and see what sort of shite is on, if you are the sort of person who's interested in sports then you'll probably watch it as there's nothing else on unless you want to watch some shit with Graham Norton or a hole in a wall or whatever piece of shit the BBC decided was better than showing David Haye.

Yes but there were 50 people in my local all there for boxing(well khan) and no-one had heard of them.It just goes to show that boxing fans are 10 a penny but true boxing fans are rare indeed.Although i shoudnt moan too much as it gives me a chance to look knowledgable for once and no one can argue back:hey

Bah!! Its easy to get the TV for Khan, Hatton, Calzaghe and now Haye but the real test is when a Jamie Moore fight clashes with the final of Britains Got Talent!!!
That separates the men from the boys.....;O)

This proves my theory. Boxing more then any other sport even football is a sport where if you like sports and you see boxing is on and there is nothing else to watch then you will swich on and watch even if you don't know about the fighters.
I'm sure the TV companies know this but I wonder if the problem is the price that the promoters and fighters are asking for?

If the 600,000 is true that means for every person that watched Khan (if the 30,000 figure is correct) 20 people watched Clev.
Or to put it another way, Hennessey pissed all over ******.

Boxing is a niche sport but not in the TV ratings. Froch, Khan etc all brought in decent crowds.
I remember them saying 2.5mil watched Williams v Sprott in the middle of the day and I knew people won't just switch off for the fuck of it.
A good fight is easily understood so people should initially give boxing a chance. If it is boring or not hyped they will switch over.

It was pretty surreal when it was put on in the pub/club I was in at the time, half the lads carried on dancing and chasing skirt and half just stopped to watch the fight.
The show peaked at 594,500.

nearly 600,000 for a fight of this size promoted as anonymously as it was gets this amount of viewers, most probably in the key male 18-35 demographic and you are giving up boxing for what reason exactly?

It was firstly a peak, not a show average. And secondly, the fight ended in the 7th (i think) meaning lost advertising revenue at the end of the 7th, 9th and 11th. The fight could of been over in the 3rd as well which would of been even worse.
The writing was on the wall for the hennesey contract when his crown jewel froch only drew a million in ITV 1 primetime. A re-run of a touch of frost would of got around 2.5-3mil without the whole production cost as well.
Boxing is unfortunatly not economically viable on fta in the present climate.

What are the typical production costs LosG and what does the TV network pay for compared to the promoter?

Man thats depressing reading........a re-run of a touch of frost would get maybe triple the viewers over a world title boxing match :-(

TV need to commit to boxing. Boxing isn't a sport you can't commit to. If they are going to show a world title fight then the country needs to know about it. I can't remember ever seeing adverts etc Maybe a week before the fight AT BEST. People will watch touch of frost cos it's an established program. Boxing is not an established sport. You can't take boxing away from the public and bring it back so many times. They lose interest, people won't understand what they are seeing or who they are seeing.
New programs like The Take etc get loads of marketing. Never seen it for boxing.
Can you give us any more info on how true the ITV Box office rumours are then mate?
My understanding it is a wholsesale selling of all ITV shows lobbied as an idea to recoup some lost ad revenue. It is not specific to sport, And as we stand is only an idea.
It is not to be compared to Sky Box Office. The only similarities are the name.
No more boxing on free to air ITV after 2009, is that true?
