View Full Version : What would you do if a WBU title belt was for sale at a charity auction?

Say for instance Ricky Hatton or Enzo Maccarinelli decide to be generous dudes and make a gesture of donating their fabled WBU titles to say Cancer Research or the British Heart Foundation - and you were at the dinner....... would you bid for it?

Or would you grab the microphone from the auctioneer and proceed to tell them the history of this prestigious title?

Whether I like the amount of Alphabet titles or not they are here to stay. Ricky Hatton's WBU title, as lightly regarded as it is, is an essential part of his history. If I was a Hatton fan, I'd be tempted to buy it.

Unfortunatly for the fight fans these belts are here to stay because they make money for the fighters and promoters it is as simple as that...
The Boxing Boards of control and different sanctioning bodies are not fussed about what belt it is... as long as it is making the interested parties more money.....
The era of 8 weights and 8 champs is a distant memory....
What I find disapointing from it all is that there are so mant domestic contests that slip away from us because it is an easier route to go for another alphabet title as opposed to going throught the British, Commonwealth and European routes before taking on a World Title Challenge......:-(

It has defo damaged our domestic scene taking away soem potentailly great contests... but Ricky Hatton's bank balance on the strength of that belt would have a strong arguement that it aint done him any harm...:bbb

Yep alot of fighters go for money over pride. The WBU belt has helped ruin boxing and the fighters who fought for it are to blame.

I'd buy it if I had enough money. People on here are very hypocritical sometimes. Yes its a poor belt, Yes it shouldn't have been established but FFS if anyone on this forum had have had the chance to fight for it there sure as hell would do. People on here find it so easy to ridicule other fighters and such but such belts as the IBO/WBU provide lads who've grafted all their lifes and probably wouldn't make a career out of boxing to be able to make a name for themsleves and bring some deserved money in to.
I'd buy it and i've have been proud as punch if I'd have won it !

This is where I disagree with a lot of people, esp on the subject of journeymen.
I don't think anyone should be 'entitled' to make a living out of something that they arent particularly good at.
If you are crap at football, you pay your weekly subs and play with the hangover. If you are half decent, you get £20 boot money and free petrol.
If you are crap at boxing, you can run away for 4x2's get a nice few quid and do it again the following Friday. All for doing a bit of work in the gym. If you are half decent, you have to train hard for area/Commonwealth level fights, which don't pay all that much more, that you can't do that often.

Well there is total diffrent levels of how good someone is, just like football.......should we say someone who plays in League 2 shouldn't be proud of winning the JPT or the League 2 championship, just because it is a lesser title to the Prem ??
If you are fighting for a WBU belt, chances are you are a pretty decent boxer, just not on the real world class level..... if you are a crap boxer, you'd be probably getting paid £50 for getting beaten up by up and comers

I'd like to hope none of us would attend or we would spit on it or we would not cheer etc etc I'd hope we'd all make a stand.
The belt is worthless.
I'd pay for it, for sure.

The difference is that its a con. It claims to be a world title, it claims to be as prestigious as the real belts. And people an promoters then claim to be world champs, when in fact they are not.

Sure the belt is worthless and just another thing for die hard fans to detest about the powers that be. That said, it's being auctioned for charity. I very much doubt that Hatton would be tempted to give away one of his WBA or IBF straps, though. I'd let someone else buy it and hope the money is put to good use:good.

I would buy it and then call out Roy Jones jr for some easy money.
He gets to bow out with a belt and i bow out minted. Great investment.

when people might laugh at this with contempt
but when Enzo Maccarenelli KO'd Bruce Scott in June 2003 for the vacant WBU title
Maccarenelli officially went into the historys books and Swansea's first and only World Champion Boxer.
Enzo then would confirm his status as Swansea's first and ever World Champion when he then went onto win the WBO vacant title.
No fighter from Swansea has ever won
WBC
WBA
IBF
World titles
Colin Jones of course came the closest when he left the boxing shed behind my back garden and went over to Las Vegas and Drew for the WBC title against Milton McCory
Colin also challenged for WBA and IBF titles against Don Curry
WBO title wasnt about in Colins day
Also Floyd Havard (who also trained behind my back garden for a stint) challenged for the IBF title against John John Molina but was stopped after a few rounds
Then Maccarenelli challenged for the WBC and WBA titles against David Haye and was stopped inside 2 rounds
The only World title belts brought back to Swansea was by Enzo Maccarnelli
The Vacant WBU Crusierweight Title
and
The Vacant WBO Crusierweight Title

A kids WWE belt from Argos would fetch more at an auction than a WBU strap.
Depends if your a fan of the fighter really. Would a Tottenham fan jump at the chance of getting thier hands on the football equivalent of a WBU strap, the Intertoto cup? ( the answer is most probably yes)

Speaking of the IBO belt, in Boxing Monthly this month Freddie Roach said the sanctioning fee for it was $20!, surely he jokes?
you could probably fight for it without to much bother
This is awesome!

A belt many great British fighters fought for or over, regardless of belt prestige.
How about, name as many British or British based fighters you can think of that were eligible, that fought for the belt and won or lost.
Put there names here....
I will begin.......
