Hi guys,

I'm just putting together a little interview with Lenny Zapp and Will Tomlinson, based on training and diet. Does anyone have any questions they'd like to get answered?
Don't bother posting anything like "When are you going to fight <insert boxers name>?" or anything like that because they are questions for their management. Let's stick to questions on diet, conditioning, or fight prep.

RayKelly

Some good questions. Will's just come back from the states where he was sparring Willie Kickett and Chris John in LA, then Gamboa in Miami, so I might throw that in too.

Hi Ray here are some questions for the boys,

Lenny
Who are your main sparring partners ?
Is it hard when you need to lose weight for a fight ?
Who does your team consist of ?
Are you looking foward to working with Vic's manager and how did you meet him , was it through Tommy and Billy ?
Who are your favourite boxers and best fights you seen ?

Will
What was it like training with Freddie Roach and Ismael Salas and is it much different to training with your Aussie trainers.
BHS looks like it growing to a major force in Australian boxing, how important is it for a boxer to have a good strong team behind you ?
Who are your favourite boxers and best fights you seen ?

Thanks Ray , are you posting their answers on the forum

I would like to know what there pre and post training nutrition looks like? Macro breakdown for these meals, timing and general day to day eating and macro breakdown. Also what they eat fight day.
Also what sort of resistance regime they follow? day's per week? type of exercise and rep range?

Also how important they see roadwork in fight preperation what they do and what their periodisation of conditioning looks like.

I have a question for you Ray:

What is the general criteria for deciding what a boxer's natural fighting weight?

I imagine strength v weight v bodyfat has something to do with it?

Yeah. Low carb has an undeserved bad rep.......but there is no doubt if done properly it spares muscle at the expense of fat.

That being said athletes usually require higher carbs than a sedentary person anyway.

Yeah, you're right. You can only learn through trial and error though (with each individual, as everyone is different). Basically, I like to concentrate on getting the guys used to having their weight at their goal, then start working on strength from there. The important thing is being at a weight where the guys can eat 5 meals a day and still train up to twice a day. You can always add strength to a frame, so the main thing is being able to comfortably sit at a certain weight.

As others have mentioned in past threads, some people just work better carrying a bit extra, although I think that's mainly for heavier fighters (79kg +)

I've passed on the questions to the guys and will post the ones I don't use for the interview up on here soon.

I'll answer the one's that relate more to my area:

What is your weights routine like? How many times per week?
The weights routine depends on where they are in their preparation but the exercises are mostly compound, reps between 3-8, 1-3 times per week.

What does their periodisation of conditioning looks like?
Too detailed to put up, but like any good program it starts out high in volume and the intensity is built over weeks/months, whilst the volume decreases. What it consists of really does depend on what we are trying to focus on but it wil usually consist of some form of running (Continuous or Intervals), and power development.
With both guys we've been just getting them used to sitting at their new weight (both have recently dropped a division), but after this fight will be concentrating a lot more on developing strength/power.

Here are some of the questions I put to them (that didn't make the article)

Lenny-

1. You have been trained by Tommy for ages...how has your training evolved in your last 10 pro fights?
LZ: The training routine has intensified and the fights have been challenging.

2. I love your left rips to the body.....do you train to throw them at a certain time in the exchange or is it instinctive?
LZ: I do train and practise to throw my left rips to the body but during a fight it can be instinctive and comes naturally.

3. As you look to face better fighters what training techniques are you doing to tighten up your defence?
LZ: More head movements ,more rolling and catching punches.

4. Are you going to fight at JR Welter or Lightweight from now on?
LZ: Lightweight.

5. How Italian are you and do you speak it?
LZ: Both my parents are Italian. I was born here and speak very little of it.

6. Also whats your favourite Italian dish?
LZ: What isn’t!

7. When you go to the US, what are your plans? One fight at a time? Become a big name and then maybe come back to Australia?
LZ: One fight at a time, just taking things slowly.

8. Who does your team consist of?
LZ: My trainer Tommy Mercuri and my manager Billy Hussein.

Will:

1. What’s your favourite movie?
WT: Man on Fire

2. What was it like training with Ismael Salas and is it much different to training with your Aussie trainers.
WT: Training with salas was an awesome opportunity. He is a very thorough trainer and insists that every thing is done with the perfect technique. The biggest difference in the training from there to here is the availability of world class sparring partners.

3. BHS looks like it growing to a major force in Australian boxing, how important is it for a boxer to have a good strong team behind you ?
WT: For a boxer to have a shot at making a good career they must have a solid team behind them with a good trainer, manager and promoter. At bhs boxing we have all of that.

4. Who does your team consist of?
WT:Lincoln Hudson is my trainer, Fidel Tukel is my manager and I am promoted by empire presents.

Not sure at the moment. He's had 2 blokes pull out already, but I know Billy Hussein is confident of getting someone.
