Jose Sulaiman, President of the WBC, has announced the institution of a new WBC green and gold belt to be called the WBC Diamond Championship, a honorary championship exclusively for fights between elite boxers. This new implementation was voted for unanimously by the WBC Board of Governors. The WBC believes that this belt will play a very important role in fights between elite boxers called “catch weight” fights. This WBC Diamond Belt is being manufactured using the same design as the traditional belt but the materials will include 18 karat gold fusion, 598 diamonds, 196 emeralds, 6 rubies and 150 swarowsky semi-precious stones. Sulaiman also stated that he is very proud of the step taken by the WBC, as it will be in benefit of improving boxing, in benefit of the boxing fans of the world, to promoters, television and everybody involved in the sport of boxing.

I hope this is a joke, Ish:patsch. Fuck me-various WBA titles, the WBO having interim champs and the WBC now proposing this as well! The boxing world is turning into the WBA!

Yep, and Bernard Dunne would probably call himself undisputed if he won that as well!

I wonder if this will be given out after the 168 tourney:think. If you look at most of the fighters taking part, they are well ranked and/or have history with the WBC. Interesting side-issue:think.

EDIT: Just been reading a little more and catch weights are mentioned. If this is the case is it another way for Pacman to get his mitts on another green strap and for PBF-JMM to be for belts as well? If this is the case then maybe the touney won't have the belt. It won't suprise me if it did, though, as I've said:think.

i dont think thety will actually start having

Diamond Champ and Normal Champ like the WBA.

They have emiruts champ but that jsut means if you relinquish you can come back and fight for the belt at any time.

:good Sort of

IMO this is a way for the WBC to pick up sanctioning fees from these non-title catchweight fights.

Don Jose must have thought, "shit! All the top boxers don't care for titles these days and fight at catchweights. We're losing out on quite a bit of revenue here. Why not introduce this super-duper belt with lots of sparkly bits on it and give it to the winners of these catchweight fights. Of course, we'll charge them a fee for it.."

In some ways it's not such a bad idea. If it's only used when two beltholders from different weight divisions vacate their belts and fight at a catchweight then it's not an overly bad thing. Certainly not as bad as all the WBA nonsense.

That said, this kind of nonsense might make even more catchweights happen and, as a result, we may see less fighters fighting properly through the weights. Pacquiao's everlasting legacy on the sport:think? This is a stupid idea, IMO. I bet it will become a farce in a few years and we will hardly see fighters challenge in proper weight divisions.

Thanks, Sillyman, you cockhead:twisted::patsch.

Potential (or signed) future catchweight fights)....

Floyd vs JMM
Floyd vs Pac
Shane vs Pac
Williams vs ????????
Diaz vs Paulie

Like I said, Beeston, the WBC know they are onto a winner here. We won't see an end to pissing catchweights now! We'll probably see less mulitple-weight champions if this catches (excuse the pun) on as well:-(.

just what boxing needs, more belts :patsch

weight divisions don't even exist anymore, you can pick up belts fighting non champions and guys who ain't even in the top 5 of a division in non existant weight divisions.

If we get a catchweight title at 170 it has to called "BHOP UNIFIED WIDE WORLD OF BHOP CHAMPIONSHIP" the belt will simply have a picture of Bernard with his stupid x mask on and landing with your head will be absolutely legal and a scoring punch and you will automatically receive a 10-8 round for every bolo punch landed maybe in every pub brawl someone will be awarded some sort of WIBOBCBNABF intercontinanal commonwealth international interim championship of the world. :tired:verysad

If this is the logic going forward, we need to go back to 15 rounds from 168 on up to HW for world titles. Those 15 round fights separate the men from the boys and get Boxing back to where it was (kind of) in the 80's.

They should get rid of all the belts altogether, and each winning fighter should be allowed to make their own out of the intestines of their opponent post-fight.

This is nothing more than a very feeble attempt to pick up sanctioning fee's for fights they cannot sanction as they dont fit into one of the weight class's. Only one problem im pretty sure the fighters wotn give a fuck. If elite fighters are making fights at catchweight its because there trying to also make as much money as possible. Im pretty sure none of them will want to hand over a percentage of that to the WBC for a worthless title that no one else can contest. This is by far the dumbest idea since the whole WBA Super champion bullshit.

TBH, mate, I think that's the way the majority of us think now. It's getting really stupid. As I've said before, I don't like it, but can you imagine this sort of thing going on the the UFC? No, because they know how to market their product to their fanbase. Boxing is killing it's own fanbase, IMO.
