I've been boxing for about 4 years now...Was going to fight amatuers after about 6 months, but things changed. SO, I decided to just stay in to boxing for fun, and be in good shape. I've done plenty of things...Boxed, then went to JKD, then went to MMA for a while. With hands I've never really had anybody beat me bad in boxing or MMA, and have been a good match for everybody I've boxed (people bigger, faster, stronger, more skilled, etc, etc)....BUT I've never really *got it all* imo. I got good hand speed, good power, take a good pop, my movement is alright, head movement is becoming 2nd nature when fighting, etc but I have no real style.
So, here's the thing. I'm 5'6, 170 pounds, and in to lifting A LOT. I actually quit sparring because I was wanted to be bigger, and have since gotten bigger. I still box at my house, and do martial arts 4-5 times a week, but no sparring for a very long time.
So, I start training this young kid a little for fun. He's about 5'10 200 pds, and lifts pretty good. I've been training him for about 2 months, and he's improved a lot. I finally spar him the other day, and was amazed at how many problems he posed for me. I know he's 30 pounds heavier with a 4 inch height advantage. He wrestled for many years so he's got good movement which posed another problem. We did it in a big open room so he ran around on his bicycle, throwing punches to keep me off him, pushing if he had to get me off him, and it was HELL for me to get in! When i did I really made sure I beat him, but just didn't think I should have as many problems.
Guess I'm just use to people willing to go to war with me, or counter punchers who I just jump on, and beat with handspeed/ power. This guy couldn't have had a more perfect plan against me....
SO, some questions. How to fight somebody like this? I know head movement, jab, try to find angles, and get inside, but anything else? Also, should I just develop one style instead of trying to be a master at everything? Any opinions/ advice would be appreciated...
