Phil Baroni has verbally agreed to a contract with the UFC, according to a source close to the fighter. The veteran welterweight’s potential signing will undoubtedly raise a few eyebrows as well as shed some light on the brewing feud between the UFC and rival promotion Strikeforce.

According to an MMAJunkie.com report, the UFC has also signed Dennis Hallman ([Only registered and activated users can see links]), another former Strikeforce fighter. A source close to the UFC intimated more signings might be on the horizon as fighters complete their Strikeforce contracts.

Strikeforce matchmaker Bob Cook ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) confirmed to Sherdog.com that Baroni was released from his Strikeforce contract in the past few days and would be free to sign with another promotion.

Baroni (13-11) dropped a unanimous decision to Joe Riggs ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) in St. Louis in June. He had won three bouts in a row before the loss.

whoooaaa all the way to 170? That would be a good fight. I give him a puncher's chance against gsp but his gonna have to work on his takedown defense in order to have a chance against gsp.

oh ok last time i saw him fight it was against frank shamrock at 185. i haven't seen him fight since but a baroni vs gsp fight would be nice. I like to see him against koscheck at 170 or alves at 185.

Not sure what the purpose of this is.What was the purpose in getting Tito back on board. Dana's tactic has changed and got even more aggresive. In order to freeze out every other promotion he's courting all the big former names in MMA and bringing them to his org. Lets be real unless he's on hormones Baroni is a joke. Exciting to watch maybe but he's just a .500 guy who wont be nothing more than fodder for anyone at 170 or 85.

Baroni much like Coleman looks like a cancer patient at 170. GSP would give him the worse tooling in his career. Furthermore the fight would mean squat.

Dana and Baroni are buddy-buddy

Hallman signing means he is Hughes' next opponent, 90% sure.

Thinking the same thing. Dana just wants to snap up all the guys and freeze others out.

That's right, Beebs, i've seen numerous article and videos where Phil says exactly the same.

When a reporter asked Phil Baroni “if you beat Frank, or knock him out, will that give you another ticket back to the UFC?”, Phil’s response was:

Phil Baroni
First of all, I want to classify, I can go to the UFC any time I want. I have an open invitation back. Look at the guys fighting in the UFC. There is a bunch of bums. TV show reality star rejects and everything else. I am more than good enough to get to fight in the UFC. I am more than good enough to wear that middleweight title. I left because I had to go and fight in the Grand Prix, which I did. There is an open opportunity to come back and fight for the title after I beat Frank Shamrock. It is not to come back to the UFC. I can say I want to go in the UFC tomorrow. (Dana White) is a friend of mine. Not only is he a friend of mine, he is a businessman, and not to have me fight on the card would be retarded. Why wouldn’t you want me to fight on your show? Every one of my fights is exciting. I bring more to the table than anybody.
