He may not be able to do this. But if he steps into the ring to try again, just the willingess to do that may salvage some of his reputation for avoiding difficult competition.
It matters that Frazier got back in the ring with Bonavena, Ellis, Ali and Foreman. It's meaningful that Patterson did the same with Ingo, Liston and Ali, or that Arguello did with Pryor, Escalera and Fernandez, or Hearns with SRL and Barkley.
While I appreciate that Holmes defended his title against over 20 different challengers, it does hamper his legacy that he didn't rematch any of the more difficult ones.
Today's top boxers do not seem to purposely seek out the most difficult and daunting obstacles, testing and proving their mettle againt the iron of their divisions. Gone are the days when a an exhuberant Roger Stafford would say, "I want Pipino Cuevas!," One of the classic promotional lines in boxing annals. ("I want Liston! I want Louis!, I want Tua!, I want Hagler!, I want Satterfield!" Great expressions of maniacal lunacy.)

Totally agree Duo. Jones never really persued the dangerous fights. Well maybe I'm being a little harsh, but you know what I mean.
