View Full Version : How many times have the top two fighters in a weight division being British?
I know of two:
Ricky Hatton and Junior Witter at LWW in 2006/7
Benny Lynch and Peter Kane at Flyweight in 1937
Any more?
Peter Kane and Jackie Paterson in 1942/3

Haye and Enzo maybe?
Funnily enough I toyed with posting that but Enzo was completely overmatched when they fought and shown up for being a 'titlist'. Plenty of fighters at cruiser at the time without a belt better than Enzo, IMO.

Thats why I put 'maybe' ;)
Terry Allen Vs Rinty Monaghan in 1949 was for the world title but not sure if there were others about

Debatable at best-Enzo being #2 I mean.I thought about it but really that was thrown around by Maccarinelli himself and FW for promoting the Haye fight. They probably actually believed in it themselves but the reality might be different.

Jackie Paterson and Joe Curran at Fly, 1944
Paterson and Terry Allen, 1945
Paterson and Rinty Monaghan, 46 and 47
I'm going by Ring rankings btw.

Yeah, that's why I put the second sentence in. Ah well- I don't stand a chance with pre-70s fighters, TBH. That said, if Ishy's going by the Ring ratings then hopefully he can find some more examples.

How frustrating! How did no-one get that one?
This is off topic but Henry Cooper was in the HW top 10 for five consecutive years and then for another two year later on. Pretty impressive.

Because people like to think, that before Lacy, Calzaghe only fought Tocker Pudwell and Rick Thornberry.;)
Lewis, Hide and Akinwande were all top 10 in 94
Lewis, Bruno and Akinwande were top 10 in 95
Lennox Lewis was a top 5 heavy for 11 years on the trot (92-03).

How close in time/ ranking were McGuigan and Cowdell?
How close were McGuigan and Cowdell?
Cowdell was only ranked in 81 (when he lost to Sal) and Barry was ranked in 84 and was champ in 85. They weren't ranked in the same year.
