How was Benny Leonard as a Boxing Referee?
dunno just thought he deserved a mention as he was a great fighter who went on to referee and actually lost his life while refereeing.
one i like is Richie Davis from England whos no nonsense but in the old fashioned way. He'll let ya fight out of a clinch etc.. but any fouling and your in for an earful

Mills Lane. He exhuded competence. Great judgment and experience and he had feet like Benny Leonard. Mercante a close second.
I'll tell you, though, Mitch Halpern was on his way to becoming a great referee. I really liked his style. And then he had to go and commit suicide over some dame. Dammit.

Yeah, that's a shame. Halperm was good... But he should have at least taken Richard Steele with him!

yeh a good ref
'no naughties with the head' was his phrase
another no nonsense ref and he had a great way of prancing round the ring.
He was forced to retire from refereeing british contests on grounds of age but he still referees in europe as far as i am aware

Oh and Stanley Christodoulou as well.
He's a good mention. Frank Cappuccino was a very good ref too. When he announced his retirement he said "I realized that I was worrying about my bad leg more than the fighters, and that's when I knew it was time to stop being a referee."
That is pure class and being very responsible.

I always liked the following refs mainly due them just letting the fighters fight and not trying to make themselves the center of attention like so many referees nowadays do.
Harry Gibbs
Larry Rozadilla
Dick Young
Isaac Herrera
Octavio Meyran
Stanley Christodolou
Frank Cappucino
Paul Venti
Mark Conn
Tommy Hart
Mercante Snr.

Richard Steele deserves a shout. His refeering in a serious shoot out between Zarate and Zamora was exemplary, and I agree wholeheartedly with his decision to wave off Meldrick Taylor.

Who was the greatest Boxing Referee ever?
I named my favourites in an earlier post ,but one of the worst must be .
ERNESTO MAGANA, for his criminal dereliction of responsibility in allowing the Duran v Moore slaughter to continue .
A disgrace.

Geez, I don't know...there were a lot of good refs and I find it hard to seperate them sometimes. I would possibly go for Mills Lane, but for me he got a little too full of himself after a while. Sometimes he thought he was the show.
Richard Steele was an excellent ref, and until his controversial stoppages in the Chavez v Taylor and Tyson v Ruddock bouts, was generally regarded as the best ref around.

Mills Lane despite the silly gimmicks and ego probably was on the way to being the best, until he blew his biggest call, and did not throw out Tyson the first time he bit Holyfield...
Although far from perfect I think Richard Steele is arguably up there. Probably Mercante Snr was the best, but sadly he went on that bit too long, and stained his reputation slightly.
If Larry Hazard had just stuck to being just a referee, the sport would of benefited greatly.

Weve done this thread before, but Steve Smoger is hands down the best referee EVER in boxing. Frank Cappuchino is a close second.
Mercante Sr is overated and I always felt corrupt
Mercante Jr thinks hes a rock star
Cortez is too involved
Steele was too involved
Nady sucks
Bayless is good
Lane was good
Halpern was good

Cappuccino was hilarious! I remember him from Lewis vs Briggs: "Ahhhhh. Come on. What are we gonna do?"
Kenny Bayless and Tony Weeks are my two favs at the moment.
Worst refs: Lawrence Cole of Texas and Mercante Jr,

Forgot about Smokin Steve Smoger. I remember him getting dotted with a chair in the back of the head in the aftermath of Rahman-Maskaev I.
