View Full Version : Email HBO To Get That Farce Max Kellerman Off The Air............
Max Kellerman ran ESPN Friday Night Fights into the ground, after he left the ratings went up 30%.
He ran Fox Sports Boxing into the ground also (not that it was any good to begin with, but he made a terrible product even worse)
And if this clown keeps doing World Championship Boxing fights, he will run it in the ground also.
I seriously could not listen to that idiot last night, say what you will about Merchant, but he is 10 times the announcer/analyst Kellerman will ever be.
And let's not forget Kellerman gave us the "Roy Jones would beat Joe Frazier" comment. :patsch
I just sent an email to HBO letting them know that Kellerman is destroying their product, I encourage anyone else here who feels the same to do so also.

Usually I'm indifferent toward Kellerman, yeah he says stupid stuff and then contradicts himself 3 minutes later but, I can usually write it off. Last night he was in rare form. He was awful even for Kellerman! Kellerman WAS terrible last night! I so missed Larry Merchant.

I like the guy.. Atlas is the one who continues to try and ruin FnF.. but in the the end FnF was down because they were showing crap fights for a long while.. they invested back in the product again after Max left, and pulled better fights.
In the end, the fighters make the fights, not the commentators.. none of us turned into see Lampley, Steward, or Merchant.. we tune into see the fighters.
Kellerman spoke the truth at the end of that fight.. Ricky fans just don't want to hear it.. Ricky is still great, and he beat a legend, and years from now it'll still look like a great win on his ledger.

All HBO has to do is have a random drug test and Kellerman will fail for sure. He looks wired to the gills and he talks like his tongue is too big for his mouth. Did you ever see Ben Stiller's version of Starsky when he takes the Cocaine thinking it's just sugar? That's the way Max sounds to me everytime he opens his mouth. He also has a cheesey, low class New York accent and that's coming from a NYer!!!

I think it's the constant repeating of the same point that annoys people about Atlas . He's gotta fight bigger' , 'He should be fighting bigger' , 'if X was fighting this fight tall' , 'He should use his advantage and fight tall'
Note that all of that will be said in the course of one round , he will then repeat this for 12 .
Out of American commentators Al Bernstein and the blow by blow commentator for Showtime are the best in my view .
Still can't be Ian Darke and Jim Watt though ;) .

Atlas is the WORST boxing commentator of ALL TIME. He is freaking terrible. He makes Fran Charles look like Howard Cosell.
I like Kellerman, he honestly loves the sport, his knowledge is much much better than what you guys give him credit for, and his enthusiasm for the sport is much needed. Merchant has become a crumudgeon as of late, same with Atlas.. I mean shit at times I swear you see Tessitore rolling his eyes at the crap that Teddy says, and you know he wants to punch him when he repeats the same damn thing 100 times in a round. Just call the damn fight already. Teddy can't let his "trainer" mentality stay put, he's gotta act like he's the best trainer ever, and he knows exactly what should be done.. but he wasn't a great trainer.. that's why he's doing what he's doing.

Pu-leez. What did Kellerman DO before Cayton handed him that ESPN gig?? Answer - the punk hosted some rinky-dink cable access show in NY. That's IT, that's the extent of his "training" for these positions. And it SHOWS.
The twerp is utterly unqualified. HBO needs a seasoned commentator like Bernstein who's paid his dues as a boxing journalist and consequently actually KNOWS something about the sport.:yep
Dudes, I explained this once before and got no response, so I'll do this one more time.
I missed the fight, I was at a party and they didn't have HBO. My old man calls me to see if I saw the fight, and I said "No, but don't tell me what happened cause I'll probably see it on HBO 2 or 3 tomorrow morning." He replies saying "Well, all I have to say is that Kellerman sucks. He is an idiot. A complete and total idiot. He sucks." I was just like okay.

I think its more that he was better at what he did before, which was more of a boxing talk show, attached to a live card.
There he could prep his talking points and didn't have to come up with live comments that revealed his lack of spontaneity.
I still think that if he's able to sit back and watch a fight two or three times he can come up with some good insites or if he's asked a question like how would this guy do against this guy. but as far as doing it all on the sper of the momment: its just not his thing.

Kellerman isn't THAT bad. A bunch of Hatton just got their panties in a wad, because he said what most people were thinking, "Gee, Castillo seems like he really did have nothing left." Manny said it from round one that it looked like Castillo was a shot fighter. He gave Hatton a chance to answer the critics right there before it started on sports shows and the papers.
Kellerman comes off as overly intense to me, but I wouldn't say he needs to be fired off a few legitimate questions after Saturday night's fight. He didn't berrate Hatton. He gave him his chance to answer and then made his honest commentary after the fight... isn't that his job?
Hatton groupies don't like Kellerman because he told the truth about Hatton...Kellerman only dropped the ball by saying Castillo was shot...

An embarrasment for the US as he makes american fans look dumb - and the unfortunate ones that actually believe his nationalistic bs will sound dumb as well.

US TV has good potential as shown by CNN etc. but HBO is not doing itself any favors by airing red neck bull shit like what comes out of Max' mouth most of the time.

Okay, this is going to sound crazy. How about Mike Tyson instead of Kellerman. He knows boxing history. He has boxed. He has been a world champion. He has a sense of humor. He appreciates what boxers go through. He may prefer the wacky weed over the cheap scotch, but give him time. The man shows promise.

I would love that but Merchant and HBO would never allow that. There is a long history after the Buster Douglas fight with Tyson and HBO.

I'm quoting you because it's the same sort of point and you kind of admit why people are so annoyed.
The fact is: Hatton fought well - it's not his fault that Castillo was shot at that point.
Why the Hatton fans are annoyed was that Kellerman first said that he thought Castillo was going to win, in direct contradiction with the much more experienced Steward, then only changed his mind when Hatton started leathering Castillo in rd4.
So, 1) Kellerman's inconsistent and flip-flops at will.
2) he was incredibly discourteous to a fighter by discrediting his opponent and therefore his victory. As someone said yesterday, if Merchant had said it, it would have been phrased more as an enquiry, whether Hatton saw anything in that opinion or not and, if it was rude, it would have more likely been funny. Merchant is a journalist, he was always gracious and only picked on fighters when they try to justify stupid choices or blatant lies.
3) he's an attention seeking jerk, because while he was making his incredibly rude and disrespectful point after his favourite had been destroyed, he looked at the camera, almost raising his eyebrows. he said it to get a rise, to be a jerk. He wanted to be rude to Hatton - nothing else.
Fair enough, you say that to a Jermain Taylor after struggling with Spinks ("So, Jermain, congratulations but would you say your victory's been diminished by facing a smaller man and still not knocking him out? What do we need to put in front of you, Bobby Gunn?") but not to someone who's just entertained the fans and knocked out a very hardy fighter through a fantastic body shot.
4) he's rammed to the gills on coke, which explains his forceful, hyperactive manner which is distracting to the fight. the reason he's poor is that he was delibrately skewing the opinion against Hatton when Hatton was doing nothing worse than Castillo ("Oh, I didn't see any warning" - well Max, how about the two warnings over the past three rounds - shit even I noticed them - maybe you were too busy licking Castillo's nuts...) i don't think it's cause he couldn;t see the other side of what he was saying, it's just he was so gassed he couldn't actually stop himself from spewing garbage.
5) He admitted himself that he was revising his opinion, using his closing comments to again denigrate Hatton's performance in light of Castillo's condition. That's NOT hatton's fault. Yes, he wasn't prime Castillo, but on that form Ricky would still have still won.
If Kessler beats Calzaghe in September/Novemeber, I can't imagine any of Kessler's fans allowing people to say JC got old or was shot, so why does it apply to Hatton?
hatton came in, in his best shape, to fight the best Castillo - that Castillo couldn't deliver doesn't mean Hatton performed badly - he was great. he smothered Castillo's work, he got his shots off coming out of the clinches, he planned for when he could trap Castillo. It was sound tactics.
Sure it wasn't graceful, but the blatant bias of HBOs crew (excepting Steward) was disappointing.
I applaud your unbiased accuracy :happy

Get rid of Steward and Lewis and Foreman, they are a mess.
Bring Jones or Tyson for expert commentary.
If Merchant is going replace with Bernstein or Atlas.

Bernstein yes, Atlas, oh God, he is horrible as well. They need to either bring back Larry or bring in Al. Al has forgotten more boxing than Max has ever known or will ever know. I just finished contacting HBO Corporate, and voicing a complaint/demand for Kellerman's going back to BAD because he is not fit to carry Larry's shoes.
I for one agree with u jack, I emailed them with all the email I knew even the one of my girlfriend, I hope with the help of everyone we get him outta there soon

Yeah. The whole point of having a commentating crew is to get different opinions. I guess now if you say that you think a fighter got a good win, but it's not something that you consider to be a career defining, massive win, you should be fired.
Like I said earlier: the guy just said what he thought was the case. I thought Castillo looked like shot fighter before this fight. This fight showed that he was. I think he said basically the same thing I thought about the fight, but in that completely incourteous "Pushy New Yorker" that gets under my skin.
I'd say that Castillo looks to be on a fast downward decline, but Hatton should still get credit for beating him in a very decisive fashion. Most serious analysts didn't give Castillo any chance of winning, but few people called for an absolute destruction like we saw. I think Kellerman would be getting a lot less grief if he would have just phrased what he said differently... then I guess he wouldn't be Max Kellerman, though.
Also, all the people claiming he has "no qualifications" have a pretty bad argument, too. Most sports commentators don't have pro sports experience... they have commentating experience, and Max has quite a bit of it. HBO's formula is to have a blow-by-blow guy (Lampley), an expert analyst (Manny), and a color commentator (Merchant/Kellerman). I personally think the combination works well. I don't really like Kellerman that much, but I'm not going to play in some stupid email campaign to fire him. I can think of 100 things in the world that are more important than Max Kellerman.

In fights between two americans he is guided by what he thought before the fight.

Kellerman is inexperienced as either a commentator or a journalist. Merchant was a well-respected print journalist who knows and, more importantly, understands the intricacies of boxing. All kellerman displays is a desire to be the centre of attention. His style is poor, there was no conversation between the commentators, nor debate, Kellerman just dismissed any point Steward had because he didn't accept he was wrong. Merchant, while he didn't always agree, always provided a debate on an issue. Kellerman's a shill, promoting his agenda above the truth.
Exactly. You have neatly summarized EXACTLY what is wrong with Kellerman, and why HBO needs to replace him with someone qualified!!
Someone like AL BERNSTEIN, for example....Wouldn't boxing fans rather have the BEST commentator in the sport at boxing's flagship network??

Not that I have to jusify myself - as ANY boxing fan has the RIGHT to express his disastisfaction with Kelllerman's inept commentary, but as a thirty year boxing fan I have never seem commentator so utterly unqualified as Kellerman.
HBO should have the best boxing commentators in the industry, not some unqualfied HACK who, along amoug commentators NEVER did any thing to acquire the experience and seasoning to qualify him for such a critcal position in the sport. It an uttter DISCRACE to the sport that thye just handed the job to the most utterly inexperienced and unqualified commentator in the sport. And boxing fans should be outraged that the job is being given to this incompetent hack on the basis of family connections. THat's just WRONG, and bad for the sport!!

Get out of boxing. Kellerman is typical of the newer type of sportscaster. Boxing is just still mainly full of older guys. Many commentators for other sports have zero print experience. I would prefer that all commentators have some serious journalist experience, but it's not typical of the newer guys coming up.
Besides, Kellerman got started with his public access show pretty young. It's not like he came up through journalism. Yeah that's another example of the self hyping apect of his career, but that's the new breed of sportscaster.
My point isn't so much his qualifications. It's that there has been a holy jihad declared against him for saying what a lot of people also think as an assessment of the fight. I know Hatton fans have a crush on him like a teenage girl dreaming about Drake Bell (I have a teenage daughter, don't get any ideas), but the fact is that Castillo looked like crap from the opening bell... just like he looked in his previous two fights. Saying that the wars have worn him down isn't disprectfull... it's a fact.

I see the point you're making, but that's not what Kellerman did - he didn't say Castillo was shot until the fourth round, actively picking Castillo as his favourite to win before that pojnt. He then admitted he was was rewriting history by saying that Castillo was shot.
Alright. I can concede that point. I took his commentary as a part of the whole, which included Manny saying that Castillo looked bad from the beginning of round 1.
I can't defend the guy too much. I personally don't like him. I just saw the email campaign to unseat him as clearly motivated by a bunch of Hattonites who are pissed he said mean things about their boyfriend :p
Besides, how can anyone get upset about him when the likes of Jim Grey still has a job?

Noone wants the brash loud kid who talks garbage 9/10 over a wise, respected and pleasant to listen to veteran who understands the sport explicitly.
Exactly - what HBO needs is a verteran, experienced commenatator who can provide insight into the sport, someone who has PAID DUES working as a boxing journalist and has therefore acquired some experience and knowledge about the sport. Not some wet-behind the ears punk who got his job handed to him because of family connections. It's an utter travesty that HBO would force this inpompetent pipsqueak on the boxing public and we can only hope they correct this mistake soon

I like Kellerman. He shows passion for the sport. He also brings up the things that the more-than-casual fan is interested in.
The only thing I don't like about Kellerman are his post-fight interviews. Unless he's putting a fighter on the spot for a dubious effort or decision, his questions come off as uninteresting.
But as an analyst, he's observant, passionate, and sometimes insightful.
Just remember, Howard Cossell was absolutely hated when he first came on the air and now we realize he was the start of a new generation of announcers.

We MUST stop this travesty. EMail HBO and let's get this twerp off tje air, before more damaged in done to this fine sport:
Boxing has bigger problems than Kellerman. Why don't you try to fix those ??? Actually Kellerman isn't a problem with boxing, some people just don't prefer him. Just like Merchant, Atlas, or Bernstien. For everyone that doesn't like him, there is someone somewhere that does. If you don't like Kellerman, don't watch the show. But trying to get a man fired from his job, just because you don't like him, and when he has done nothing wrong is just plain petty and shows how much of a punk you are. Hopefully sometime soon, someone will try to get you fired from your taco bell job, because they don't like you !!!
HBO should get Sean O'Grady, the Champ does it better than anybody.

No - it's called the majority opinion of boxing fans who recognize an incompetent fraud who got his job through his family's connections, rather than EARNING it by paying DUES as a writer, cornerman, ANYTHING. :patsch
Kellerman is a JOKE as a commentator. There are guys on this site that are more qualified as boxing analysts than Kellermans. And CERTAINLY Al Bernstein is!!!!
Send in those letters guys. AL BERNSTEIN for HBO Boxing commentator NOW!!!!!!:happy

Well I finally did it. I wrote an impassioned letter asking HBO to
replace the unqualified punk Kellerman with a true boxing analyst
Al Bernstein. I don't like messing with someone's livelihood but
Max's performance at the Hatton, Castillo fight was disgraceful,
incompetent and really insulting to both fighters. The first words
out of his mouth after Hatton's sudden and surprise victory from that
viscious and perfectly placed body shot is something like Well Castillo
is a shot fighter. Gee maybe Hatton's power, nonstop punching
and excellent boxing tactics had something to do with Castillo's
loss. Also Castillo fought bravely and was coming on a bit before
Hatton literally knocked the wind out of him. Both fighters deserved
more respect and his ring interview with Ricky was pathetic.
Hatton did well not to clock this idiot as he disparaged both fighter's
terrific efforts that night. No-one would get up from that liver shot.It looked much harder than the one Hopkins stopped Oscar with. Castillo
tried his best but Ricky was just the better man that night. Anyway,
even if our efforts get Max Kellerman fired from his gig we shouldn't
be too sad. Max can always get a job as a squeegee kid wiping
car windows. Afterall he already has that drugged-out, coked-up
look squeegee kids are so famous for. Then again there's always
barber college. That way he could finally give himself a decent haircut.

Well, I'm no big fan of O'Grady, but ANYBODY'd be better than Kellerman. Hell, I'd take that loser Bob Spagnola who commentated for Fox back in the 90s!!!!
