View Full Version : If you were gonna make up a gang of ATG's to get into a gang war, who would u pick?

Me, I would want Foreman, Shavers (not an ATG, but still would be extremely useful), Duran, Holmes (great at jumping off of cars and kicking people in the face), Marciano, Liston, Tyson, Saddler, Armstrong, Hagler, and Harry Greb. IMO no one would mess with us on the streets.

HW ATG's: Dempsey, Marciano, Liston, Jeffries, Sullivan, Foreman (George wanted Tyson), Holmes (Larry wanted George), Jack Johnson. (Battle royale background. 'Nuff said.)
Other ATG's: Duran, Greb, Walker, Jeff Chandler (while Bantamweight Champion in 1982, he actually did hold off several attackers during a traffic altercation, until one of them resorted to stabbing him in the shoulder with a broken bottle, leaving a distinctive scar. This construction worker is one tough little guy). LaMotta. (Mean, mean, mean.) Basilio. Jack Blackburn (Survived his brother's slashing of his throat, then shot and killed a man. Carried a knife scar on his face.) Gans. (Another battle royale veteran.) Camacho. (Never lost a street fight. Dirty antagonist.) Fitzsimmons. (Actually went after Wyatt Earp, after Earp disqualified Bob against Tom Sharkey in 1896. Earp wisely drew a gun. You know, if referees carried guns today, boxers wouldn't ignore them so much. Perhaps mace would be a more suitable alternative.)

Duran is a great choice.....he shows up on both posted lists.
Remember, he once cold-cocked a horse....good for use on the
NYC mounted police if they try to intervene.

Mickey Ward (I know, not an ATG but an all-time tough guy), Billy Conn, Jerry Quarry - not an ATG either but a darn good fighter. If I was going to include all-time tough guys who were not ATGs, I would have selected Tex Cobb, Mustafa Hamsho, and Vito Antuofermo.
One ATG I omitted from my initial list was Victor Galindez, a steel chinned competitor who wasn't fazed by the sight of his own blood.

Liston and Foreman with Greb between them would take the center.
Duran and Ketchel on the flanks.
Iran Barkley was a Black Spade from the Bronx. No one beats that kind of experience. Throw him in there -as well as Jack Dempsey who had about a 100 hobo fights.
I'd stand watching just out of reach of the blood splatters with a cigar.

Tex Cobb, Hamsho, Antuofermo, Galindez - GREAT choices! Heck, I sure would not want to piss them off. A guy I used to know from Philly was drinking with Tex Cobb in a bar there one time years ago. He was in stitches. Cobb should have been a stand up comic. This guy said he never had more fun in his entirte life listening to Tex's stories. He was hilarious. His comedic timing was impeccable.Yeah, I couldn't believe it when Tex tried to rob Al Bundy, and Bundy decked him! (Course then he sued Al for taking away his livelihood-the ability to burglarize homes.)

If having Crazy Larry on my side causes Goodyear and Needles to forget about everybody else in my gang, it's a worthwhile selection.

When Tex Cobb was actively boxing...he had the cartilage remove from his nose so he wouldn't have so many broken noses. His doctor froze it to be re-inserted at a later date.
He attended Abilene Christian College in Texas, then something must have gone seriously wrong.

Oliveras people will think he's weak cause he's small but one punch and there out.
Liston was the most intimidating heavyweight and had crazy power.
Ron Lyle did time for murder he is one crazy mofo plus hits like a truck.
Fritzie Zivic the guy would literally gouge your eyes out.

I just saw a rerun of Bruce Lee's "Enter the Dragon" on AMC the other day. He was asking John Saxon's character how to break out of a particularly troublesome hold. Hopelessly stumped, he was given the correct answer, "You bite him!" Later, in a deadly tournament, he did. That refreshes my perspective to recruit Tyson and Golota for my gang.

A P4P list (not just including heavyweights) would include for me
Iran Barkley
Diego Corrales
Johnny Tapia
Bernard Hopkins
Roberto Duran
Hector Camacho
The first 4 were known to roll with a gang in their younger years (I think Hopkins did), they would surely know some boys. Duran has a reputation as a youngster for being in numerous streetfights and being undefeated, anbd Camacho also has a reputation as a good street fighter.
If I had to include heavyweights, fighters like George Foreman, Sonny Liston, Jack Dempsey, Lennox Lewis etc etc Would make the list.
Anyone else heard about the altercation between Lewis and that sprinter at the olympics, I think it was Johnson? Johnson wouldn't have done shit

I wouldn't pick any of them. Prize fighting and street fighting are two totally different animals...Yes, and much of boxing's allure stems from the question of which ATG's would be adept at both. Most competitive prize fighters who are great on the street are not ATGs in the ring, and vice-versa. Which ATG's do you think might make the grade?

A similar thread was started on this subject a few months back. I responded by sharing some stories, about a fighter who was not an all time great, but was reputed to be a rather dangerous individual.
Years ago, I had family that lived in Florida, mainly on the east coast. I would visit them at least once a year, usually in January, to escape the Chicago winters. I developed a friendship with a guy down there who was a realestate broker, and big time boxing fan. At one point he sparred with John Mugabi, but that's another story. This was around 1990, when we watched Tim Witherspoon clobber a veteran fighter named Jeff Sims. Sims had spent some time in prison and was known for being a nut case. My friend said that Sims lived in the Belglade area, which is located toward the central region of Florida. My friend was visiting Belglade on business one time, during the 80's, when he went to a local nightclub where Sims was hanging out. Apparently, Sims got into a scuffle with some locals, and wound up messing one of them up pretty badly. When the police arrived, it took several officers to get him into a squad car.
I looked at Sim's profile on BoxRec. He died around 1993, at the age of about 39. I don't know what led to his demise, but I can only assume that it was related to his rather troublesome lifestyle.

After kayoing Prater, he was rumoured to be the second coming of Sonny Liston. It was against Sims that Tyrell Biggs later made his name in the professional ranks, courageously prevailing despite a broken collarbone. In some unfortunate ways, Sims may truly have been Liston's shadow.

I think I remember hearing that he sparred with Ali briefly. I'm not sure about Foreman though. Sims also had losses to Shavers, young, Biggs, Ribalta, Witherspoon and Boncrusher. Outside of losing to good fighters, I don't think Sims ever did much else. He had a dangerous punch, but poor stamina. He wasn't the most talented or skilled prize fighter either from what I recall. Apparently however, he was not one to be messed with in a street fight or bar brawl.

I just found an article on Jeff Sims off of another site. Apparently, Sims was shot and killed in a gunfight in 1993.
Years earlier, Sims Learned how to box, while serving time in prison for manslaughter. At one point, he was a sparring partner fo Gerry Cooney and Muhammad Ali. he made headlines once for spliting Ali's lip in sparring.

Randall “Tex” Cobb, a former kickboxer and football player at Abilene Christian, once was suspended from the team when the coach saw him, clad only in jockstrap, standing on a dormitory roof. He had an English crossbow and was shooting flaming arrows at another dorm, screaming: “Get ready to die.”
