View Full Version : What age did you started boxing?

I just turned 25 last month and have recently started training to compete as an amateur boxer.. I always loved the sport of boxing but never actually think I would try it and when I did, I can't stop thinking of it.
I did noticed that most people who goes to my gym started very young in their teens and I notice that by starting young they make every move seem so natural.. It just looks so automatic to them and for me to slip a punch seems so hard.. How much time will it take to actually feel comfortable in the ring? I sometimes train twice a day just to try to learn twice as fast but it is taking quite long to catch on..
At what age did you guys started boxing? How many wins and losses do you have? Also if you started late like I did how many fights did you win and lose?
I plan on staying with this sport untill my body can't take it anymore.. I have spent over $2000 in gears and training equipments so far.. I only been doing this since June. Am I taking this too seriously?
I really do like the motivation boxing has given me!
Thanks for reading and I hope to hear from some of you.

I am 21 and started about 8 months ago.
I think it's never too late. People who started very young definately have a big advantage overs someone who starts late but, boxing is a mind game. You can't make heart with skills or years of training. You either have it or you don't. With the right mindset, a bit of talent and great coaching, there are no limits. But as far as I'm concerned, I'm only looking for some amateur competition.

wow what did u manage to spend 2000 bucks on?

21 for about 6 months but only twice a week. Its a genuine boxing gym but the guy runs more like classes for the people who arnt sure weather they want to compete. Im gunna give it a couple more months then approach him about coming more often and let him know im interested in competition and see what he says :D

congratulations on taking up this sport and showing such enthusiasm.
don't worry about not seeming to be as natural as some of the lads that started at 11 or 12,boxers such as frazier, holmes and marciano had relatively late starts.
as for slipping punches,if you've only been training for 3 months then its still early days.i boxed for 5 years and never mastered slipping punches.
good luck

I started at one month shy of 23. The talk that you can't look fluent unless you start at early age is bullshit. Some guys always look herky jerky like Vitali Klitschko or Aaron Pryor, while others look smooth like Pep or McCallum, but starting age is not the factor here; personal style, genetic makeup and priorities is.

Thanks Turpinr, I'll definitely keep this post as a reminder so I wont feel so bad when 5 years has come and I still can't slip a punch. I'm kidding.
I didn' know Frazier, Holmes and Marciano started late.. Thanks again!
To Kerozene, I agree with you that it's never too late.. I just wish I had started at a younger age like most boxer did. Thanks for the response!
To Johnboy2007, do it! step it up and let him know you want to compete so he could start working with you more. Good luck with it!
To ChrisPontius, we started nearly the same age. (kinda) Have you competed yet? I don't know what style is best for me yet.. I'm still working on my rhythm and footwork. I just hope that when I start competing, I wont look so far behind the others. Thanks for responding and good luck to you!
To all the others who responded with your starting age.. Thank you! To those who asked what I spent over $2000K on.. I won't list it all here but I just took a snap shot of a pile of some of my gears and equipments..
What costed me the most money was my treadmill and TKO multi-station gym which is at my girlfriends place so I can't take a snapshot of that.
This picture shows some of my gears.. Missing is my red Pro Cleto Reyes lace up training gloves, my adidas super low boxing shoe and tons of other accessories thats in my other gym bag which is at my girlfriends place in another town.

I'm sure I wont need a snapshot of everything.. I still plan on getting just a few more gears.. Like the competetion headgear Kolya suggested in my other post and the Winning FG-2900 headgear.. That's later on and I think that's all the headgears I'll be needing for now.
This is the first set of workout station that I bought when I first started.. I don't use it much anymore because I train at a gym near where my girlfriend lives and on my off days I train at my 2nd home (her place)

I started at 21 . It took me about a year to get comfortable. I had my first fight July 11. I won my first 4 fights and loft a decision in a final in a tournament a couple weeks ago. So I'm 4 and 1. There's a guy I used to train with who started at 24 and has been nationally ranked in the top 10 a few times throughout his amateur career

seriously. Do you need that much equipment? The only thing you really need are handwraps, a skipping rope, running shoes, boxing shoes, one head gear, 12 oz gloves, a mouthpiece and sparring gloves. Later on before competition get a kidney belt.
This should all be under 300$. and thats getting really good stuff.

I'm 33, and started back in June. I do regret not starting younger, plus I won't get the chance to fight competitively. I train 4 nights a week, and absolutely love it.
Its the hardest training i've ever done but I do feel so much healthier, look in a lot better shape, lost a couple of stone & have so much more energy. This, along with the new skills i'm learning has given my self-confidence a much needed boost.
I think further down the line I will have a look at going down the White Collar Boxing route, just as a means to compete. Would have loved to compete on the Amateur route, but left it too late (i'm 34 in April).
I guess what i'm trying to say is that its never too late to start, even if you don't become a world champion. If you put the work in then you get some good rewards back, whatever your age!
