WBC #5 heavyweight Juan Carlos Gomez faces WBC #3 ranked International titleholder Oliver McCall in a WBC world championship eliminator on October 19th in Berlin's Estrel Convention Center. With the back injury suffered by Vitali Klitschko, the victor in this grudge match has a good chance to get his world title shot against the Oleg Maskaev-Samuel Peter winner in short order. It's the second time that the "Black Panther" and "The Atomic Bull" have clashed. Two years ago, Gomez decisioned McCall but later tested positive for cocaine. "After the fight McCall started trash talking. He said that I would rather run than fight and that I couldn't punch hard. Well, in Berlin I will proof him wrong," promised Gomez during today's press conference at the Cancun Bar near Potsdamer Platz.

Didn't McCall JUST win a title eliminator back in June?

Gomez makes it look easy beating McCall. Even with his glass chin Gomez will give the old timer a boxing lesson and take that mando spot. It will be like stealing candy from a baby. That is how easy it will be.

Mccall will give Gomez the beating of a life time, Mccalls so close to getting his chance at a another title he could taste it. Mccalls determination gets him a late round knockout of Gomez.

I expect McCall to make the adjustments he needs to win...either a late TKO or a UD.

If Gomez had McCall's heart, he'd be a top 5 HW and a beltholder by now, but no amount of heart can help McCall avoid Gomez's quickness. Sam was a plodder who was built for the now past it McCall. Gomez could defeat himself, but I doubt McCall defeats Gomez.

Gomez outboxed him before, but looked very tired in the last 3 rounds in particular and seemed happy just to jab and hold.

If McCall can make the right adjustments, he can do better this time. It was the straight lefts he had a problem with.
If not, he'll just be slowly trundling around taking Gomez's potshots again for a wide UD loss.

Toss-up this one.
Credit to McCall, this didn't have to happen but he's taking on an opponent that doesn't suit him. If he prevails that'll be very valuable. I'd have to think he'd be even more determined than before to win this fight.

Gomez trying to make out he's a big punching slugger is very funny though! :D
I think McCall would be overjoyed if Gomez was stupid enough to try going toe-to-toe, I expect the stick 'n' move from Gomez as per usual.

Everyone wants to be made out to be a big puncher. It's more masculine.

I believe Gomes decisions McCall under the condition that he is really in shape.

McCall can punch and he brings that power in the late rounds. Watch the Akinwande fight as evidence.

If Gomez either makes as mistake of going toe-to-toe, foolishly lets his hands down, or runs out of gas in the late rounds, McCall might pull it off.

I find it funny that people say Gomez has a glass chin… they read BoxRec and see ‘TKO 1’ without even knowing the circumstances or even watching the damn fight.

He’s always refused to fight another fellow Cuban because of politics and when his opponent pulled out of his fight; they forced him to fight Diaz.

Gomez was stunned but never went down, in fact he’s never been down, amateur or pro and that’s after fighting the great Felix Savon several times (the guy that TKO’d David Tua in the amateurs).

I respect McCall because he has arguably the greatest chin of all time, in any weight division in any era.

But Gomez is arguably the most skilled heavyweight in the world, certainly the fastest hand speed today.

Only Muhammad Ali has thrown more punches than him in a single heavyweight fight (against Sam via Compubox).

Gomez lacks power @ heavyweight though, just like Ali did.

He had decent power fighting @ 190lbs knocking out 90% of his opponents, but it never carried to heavyweight.

Gomez has faster hands than Wlad, and I’d pick him to beat Peter to become the WBC heavyweight champion for Peter’s first mandatory.

What's funny? Gomez was a ferocious puncher at Cruiser, it's just that heavy he applies the stick and move style.

I think if he was in shape at say 205-215 pounds, he could be a bit more stationary, slip, sit down on his counters and have more effective power.

That said, I expect nothing from him from this point on his career.

Not to be rude, but I didn't think I'd have to spell it out...thought it was pretty obvious my points were in relation to a heavyweight fight, between him and another heavyweight. And Gomez has punched out no-one of any relevance at HW.

Gomez punching out Cruisers does not matter.

Mccalls ready to take out Gomez, hes not going to let anything stand in his way of him getting a chance at another title shot.

Why is McCall taking this fight with Gomez? He has nothing to gain!

He should take a tune up while waiting for his mandatory WBC title shot.
