after much consideration i have finally come up with who i would like my favorite heavyweight of all time to be ... simple... sonny liston ..
the man exemplifide everything in your average tough blue collar heavyweight .. he was strong... intimidateing... a freak of nature ..
as his tomb says ... "a man" ...
i also heard the tune "night train" for the first time last night and my god that song is intimidateing in itself!...sounds like a tune to a mafia beat down

Holmes and Lewis.
Never been a Liston fan, just don't like his style. Frazier and Tyson's as well for that matter. I've heard that Lison's book is meant to be a very good read "Night Train".

Liston had a mistique, an aura, few had it , but he commanded it. He was always surrounded by notoriety.. Great fighter who had a vast number of unknown quantities surrounding him. Liston was the epitomy of tough.

Jerry Quarry. Kinda tough luck guy, came along the same time a Frazier, Ali. Seemed to get cut only in big fights, which most people don't know. He life was quite a soap opera.
Jack Dempsey

My favorite is Evander Holyfield.
I know that he wasn't the greatest heavyweight of all time, but I guess that because I grew up watching him so closely that I developed a close liking for him.
Here are my main reasons:
1. He had tremendous guts
2. He never quite, even when badly hurt
3. He was a well rounded boxer/puncher
4. He always showed up in great shape
5. He fought the very best fighters available throughout most of his career
6. He was a modest gentleman who didn't talk trash, nor got into big fiascos in or out of the ring.

I like Buster Douglas I could relate to him as a person I was a huge Tyson fan and usd to hate Douglas but when I found out more about him I liked him he was a very normal human being who when he got his chance did an extraordinary thing which winning the HW crown in any era is.

Hey Mr M,
I like Holy too, and mainly for the same reasons as you.
However, no 6 is a bit iffy.
The Evan Fields Balco disgrace is certainly a fiasco in my book, and the 1000,000 illigitimate children is an out of ring disaster!!
Still, a genuine tough guy. I keep reviewing the Bowe trilogy...

Top 5.
1. Ali. It still has to be Ali, despite me going off him a 'little' in the past few years, mostly because of the bullshit that written about him. But his flawed personality still fascinates me, and he wasn't a bad fighter either.
2. Foreman. I actually like Foreman as a 'bloke' more than anything, he seems like a decent geezer and Holmes calling him a phoney convinces me that he was geniunely ok. Even Ali once said (around 74 ish) "Why does he act like a mean mother when he's a really nice guy". I don't always like watching him fight, but when against a brawler there was no one better.
3. Lewis. As a Brit that wasn't keen on Frank Bruno (a rarity), I found the perfect guy to root for. The fact that he was the best for a few years helped too, as the public finally took him to their hearts (around 2001).
4. Holyfield. The Deal came along when I was desperate for someone to beat Tyson up, so he was my favourite fighter during the 1990s (after Nigel Benn). Found it really difficult to pick who to support between him and Lewis when they first fought in 1999.
5. Johnson. The first book I ever read on boxing was Papa Jack by Randy Roberts and it still could be my favourite. I've forgotten more about Johnson than anyone. A few years ago I probably could have matched someone like Janitor in this area. I've a feeling a re-discovery is due.

No one messed with the Big Scot. Even a burglar that broke into his house tried to sue him for beating getting the shit beaten out of him.
