View Full Version : Special for Bill1234: Larry Holmes interview pre Holmes-Tyson

After the statements made refering to Holmes fighting Tyson, that Holmes heard about it one week before it happened or had only one month to train, etc. All the Bill history revisionism ended when i watched Tyson vs Biggs, with a Holmes interview after it.
For clarity, Tyson fought Biggs in October 1987. So this interview was conducted three months before Tyson fought Holmes.
Here is a link to the interview that i put online:

In case you don't want to watch or can't, here are some things he said that oblitarate Bill's statements. Because i had to repeat all my arguments about 4 times before they sunk in, in the past, i made the relevant statements clearer to read.
Thompkins: Larry, is there a deal for you to fight Mike Tyson?
Holmes: "Yes it's a deal, there's a few things we have to work out yet, but it's a deal.
You know, i'm ready to go in there with Mike some time january, whatever date they want."
[...]
Holmes: "Well i tell you, sometimes a layoff is the best for you. As you know i was fighting 4 - 5 times out of a 12 month-period. Sometimes there's wear and tear on your body and you need a good rest. I think the rest probably helped me more by not going into the gym everyday and not getting up in the morning every day and i think that rest helped me pretty much.
And i got that desire again to go out there one more time and show the people who the real heavyweight champion is and give it back to the dogs.
And for Bill's statement "Holmes was only in there with Tyson for the paycheck, he didn't really want to win, just money:
Thompkins: "You might be the first grandfather to be heavyweight champion.".
Holmes: "No doubt about it, if i didn't think i could win, i wouldn't get back in the ring. I don't need the money, i'm very rich with what i have, and i'm happy - happily married, and i'm just gonna keep on doing what i'm doing.
[...]
Thompkins:" Don, is there a name on the contract and a date for this fight? Is it gonna happen and if so, when?"
King: It's gonna happen in january. [...] When i went down to him talking about fighting, he put on a 15 round exhibition, it was stupendous. [..] He stated to me by no uncertain indication that he's ready - and he's gonna be in there ready to fight.

Holmes came out of retirement for the money during the early 90's, as his business ventures were not doing as well as expected at the time. Maybe Bill is getting confused. Holmes came out of retirement to accept the challenge of fighting the new kid on the block, combined with the purse. He never needed the money, but no question the $3 million was part of the reason he decided to fight Tyson.

Yep. I've already told Bill that the Holmes fight was being talked about the day after the Tucker borefest, as Tyson't next contest after Biggs but his goldfish span memory obviously forgot about it three seconds later. :good

Have any of us read Lerry Holmes: Against the Odds? It's Holmes' life story & is a great read. Larry himself gives a good insight on the Tyson fight.
Holmes states he never came back just for the money, he was already rich & owned a great deal of Easton, had Larry Holmes' enterprizes etc. However, the $3M played a part.
Larry is man eniugh to admit in the book that when it came time to walk to the ring to face Tyson, he didn't want to go. He said he realised at that moment that he had tried to annoy, upset Tyson with some trash talk in the build-up & that he knew Tyson, a young, hungry fighter at the time, was coming for him.
Larry tells it like it is in the book & for those who haven't read it, I would highly recommend it.

It's a very good book. That still doesn't stop him from his half-truths concerning some issues, e.g. The Tyson fight, the Mallard Years.

I don't think that any book, documenatary or even testimony from Jesus Christ all mighty himself could have explained some of Holmes' choices for title defenses. I would have taken every participant sitting at the table in the last supper over Cobb, Rodriguez, Zanon, Evangelista, Bey, L. Spinks or Ledoux.

An early education is a good one. Personally i think he is treated quite well in here considering some of his statements. The good old ESB Classic section can always be counted on for it's soft and patient nurturing....
Well, certainly compared to other places

Agreed,
As much as I appreciate Chris Pointius's insights on a lot of issues, I think that he spends too much of his time trying to change Bill's views. As you already said, he's 13 years old and knows Holmes personally ( at least he says ), It's obvious why he's such a fan of him, and at times, is easily misled by certain half truths.
I say leave the kid alone and move on.

I didn't know Bill was 13. At any rate, that's no reason to let him live in a world of illusions. On top of that, he's not the only one claiming that Holmes trained only one week for the Tyson fight or was only there for the money.

Yeah, I thought he was 15. Regardless, if some guy is talking shit about something it's obviously going to get run-over at some point in here. Chris cleared Bill's delusion up nicely with this thread, it's a good thing I think.
Bill is a good guy, he'll cope.

Glad to see you guys had fun making an ass out of your selves and me over the wghile I was away for the weekend. It seems to me, that my earlier comments from febuary and march left a big immpression with you guys, and left us all off on the wrong foot with me. I guess I can't change that now. But what I'm wondering is, why must you go after me the way you do, when someone else might say the same thing, but you' say its right, or ignore it. Or when there's someone like Duodenem or what ever his name is going around swinging on Larry's sack. He's actually making me bash Holmes with some of the things he says. I know I'm a bigger fan of Larry than most on this site, but wouldn't you say I have good reason? Also, I think its been blown completely out of proportion. Just because I stick up for him when people are trash talking him, making him seem like an ass hole or crappy fighter, suddenly I'm the biggest nuthugger in the world.
PS, who ever the ass hole is who made the William account or what ever, you can go screw your self you prick.
