"Minotauro" Nogueira: If Frank Mir thinks I was making excuses, then let's go do it again ([Only registered and activated users can see links])
by John Morgan on Sep 04, 2009 at 7:45 pm ET
[Only registered and activated users can see links] heavyweight Frank Mir (12-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) doesn't have much good to say about Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-5-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) these days.
Mir has taken exception to the numerous "excuses" – such as a severe staph infection that hospitalized the Brazilian, as well as torn meniscus – laid out by UFC president Dana White, UFC announcer Joe Rogan and "Minotauro" himself as to why the Nogueira that lost to Frank Mir in December 2008 was different than the one that defeated Randy Couture in the main event of this past Saturday's UFC 102 in Portland, Ore.
Nogueira's been listening to Mir's complaints, and now he's ready to reply.
MMAjunkie.com ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) today spoke with Ed Soares, Nogueira's manager, and the Brazilian had a message to deliver through his representative.
"Rodrigo just got off the phone with me, and we were talking about it," Soares said. "Rodrigo's been watching a lot of these interviews with Mir saying that Nogueira is just making excuses, and what Nogueira feels is he's not making excuses. If he was making excuses, he would have been saying that immediately after the fight with Mir.
"He wanted to come out and put on a good performance against Mir, and he's not making excuses now. He's giving the reason he performed the way he did back in December."
In an interview with RawVegas.tv ([Only registered and activated users can see links]), Mir criticized the on-air performance of Rogan during the UFC 102 broadcast for repeatedly referring to Nogueira's injuries prior to the UFC 92 contest.
"I heard that Rogan is making a lot of excuses for certain fighters for why they performed badly," Mir said. "That's always disheartening to me just for the reason being that every fighter has reasons why we don't perform at 100 percent. I think as fans we don't want to hear heroes or warriors ever sitting and complaining that they almost died from staph or anything else. I think that's pretty sad and pathetic."
Nogueira said little after the UFC 92 loss to Mir, and he only addressed the injuries prior to that bout when pressed by reporters at UFC 102's post-fight press conference.
"I had a staph infection," Nogueira said after UFC 102. "I was in the hospital for seven days just like 20 days before the fight. The day I came out of the hospital I tore my meniscus in my left [knee]."
Soares today said those comments were never meant as excuses for the loss.
"There's a big difference between making excuses and giving the reason why," Soares said. "And just to prove that Nogueira is not making excuses, he wants his next fight to be against Mir, and he wants to fight him in December."
Mir is currently rumored to be facing Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 on Dec. 12 in Memphis, Tenn. But as witnessed by the recent scrapping of a previously announced rematch between Dan Henderson and Rich Franklin, the UFC has been known to shuffle matchups when the situation dictates the change.
Soares and Nogueira hope the bad blood building between their camp and Mir can prove to be one of those situations.
"Nogueira didn't want the information about his injuries to come out, and that's proof that he wasn't making excuses," Soares said. "If Mir really thinks he was making excuses, then let's get in there and go in the octagon in December.
"We want it."

Im sure Mir would do it agian he will fight anyone but is Dana willing to promote a rematch of one of the most one sided fights in recent memory ? This isnt like a Shamrock-Ortiz thing where atleast they can build it up with some unintentional comedy.

lol Mir really knows how to mess with people mentally. If he fought Nog again he'll find another way to beat him. Nog beats a 46 yr old Couture and all of a sudden everybody thinks he's back. He fought a great fight against Randy don't get me wrong but Mir would beat him again. It wasn't injuries that caused to Nog to lose to Mir. It was basic Boxing that tagged Nog right on the button with his chin exposed. Standup wise it was the same old Nog that fought everyone else including Couture. And Nog couldn't sub Randy, he's not gonna sub Mir. Mir is a black belt also, just a step below but Mir's strenght can keep Nog controlled and Mir will throw him around again. Frank takes it again.

This fight should happen. Especially as Brock is fighting Carwin. Make the fight happen I say.
Nog deserves the rematch and Mir is coming off a loss. Despite their fight being one sided, I think it should still happen.

Dude stfu Nog is one of the greatest of all time. Frank Mir can't carry his jockstrap.
Frank Mir got battered by a pub landlord (Freeman) and a pudgy jiu jitsu coach who can't fight (pe de pano). But I guess falling off a motorcycle is just an excuse right?

You guys who are picking Nog to woop Mir are simply not using your heads. Ya , Nog is probably the second or third best MMA HW of all time, but it still doesn't change the fact that his a former shell of himself. Lets take the Frank Mir fight aside for right now. What about his other fights in the UFC. He barely squicked by Heath Herring and Tim Sylvia, and in both fights he almost got KO'd taking severe punishment, thats not the mark of an elite fighter. Nogueira is pretty much a shot fighter, winning a decision over a fellow old fighter with a lot of miles like Couture doesnt all of the sudden mean that his back and ready to beat Frank Mir who was dominating him every second of their last fight. Anything can happen in fighting, but the chances of him beating Mir are very slim.

Dude what the hell was that? Youre just saying everything thats already been said.
Nog BEAT Herring and Sylvia. He beat Couture. Couture is old but better than most fighters in the world. Thats the bottom line.
Nog looks the worst he ever has and gets stopped with strikes by a guy who isnt a striker, then comes back and beats Couture. I think I'll give him a pass.

I would take Mir again in that fight. There has been a continual decline in his abilities for a while now; Herring nearly KO'd him, Sylvia nearly KO'd him, Mir dropped him over and over before finishing the job, then another declining fighter in Couture lost a decision.
However you feel about Mir, including the irrational haters, it's pretty clear that the fight with the other aging fighter was the exception, not the fight with Mir.
I especially enjoy those just flat out ignoring that the first fight happened at all, or even actually using it to criticize Mir; as if he should never have had the audacity to beat Nog. It's pathetic.

Scur are you high when the fuck did he get beat down by Wes Sims ? Sims got KTFO in the rematch and was getting schooled until he pulled some Pride headstomps in the first fight. Calling Mir medicore or average; implying he won't be any more than a footnote in history is irrational and incorrect. Making statements like that is what a hater does.
He's got one of the more intriguing stories in MMA; he was a very young guy who burst onto the scene with great submissions, destroying guys including one of the best BJJ fighters at the time in Tavares very quickly, a lot like BJ Penn. Its easy to be a revisionist and write off the guys he beat, but they were all solid fighters at that time; more so it was how he was doing it, with speed and craftyness you just dont see in guys his size. That shoulder lock on Pete Williams sticks out as one of the coolest ever.
He then snaps Timmys arm to win the title, crashes his bike, fades into the background and gets fat and generally in terrible shape physically and mentally. His comeback was pretty terrible, but then at the Hardonk fight we see a bit of the old Mir, then he pulls out a fantastic sub over an incredibly impressive Lesnar and knocks out Nog for the first time in history; impressive no matter how hurt Nog was, it was still the first time anybody including Fedor stopped him. Not that it was the same Nog, but it is still impressive.
History will remember him as a guy who was succesful in 3 distinct eras of MMA: the "dark ages" period when MMA wasn't even on cable, the early modern era before the real explosion of the past years, and what is currently the modern era.
He will also be know as one of the first big guys to have a truely slick and technical ground game like a smaller man, and possibly the best offensive guard for a big man ever certainly in the discussion. You count the time guys lasted on the ground with Mir in seconds rather than minutes, and he did it with really unique stuff: the aforementioned Williams fight, the way he could grab a sub even when he didn't have it set up on the joint, like when he broke Timmys arm or "kneebarred" Lesnars shin.
Now obviosuly there were some pretty low points, but to act like they erase his accomplishments or like they had nothing to do with an absolutely horrible injury that it was possible he would never come back from physically or the mental and drug problems that injury caused him is just being irrational and wrong, which like I said is being a hater.

Nobody is seriously calling him 'mediocre'. He does, however, have a lot of losses to mediocre fighters, and if you're going to make excuses for them, but not accept Nogs grudging explanation of what contributed to his perormance, then you're being hypocritical.

More than one person has called him medicore or average, in those exact words. It's in one of the other recently active threads.
Nog was clearly not his best for that fight, but I still don't think he will win a rematch. He was obviosuly hindered by problems, but he is going to continue to pick up injuries and age; the specific injuries and the general aging are sperate issues obviosuly, but I think the general decline in his health and most importantly his chin are just going to continue to get worse.
The things that allowed Nog to win so many great fights are starting to leave him, and they are only going to leave him faster with time; having an opponent in Randy who is also losing those qualities is obviosuly going to mask their decline, but it's still there.
So I think the staph and miniscus played big roles, but so did the general aging factor, and the general factors are going to mean more and more specific issues. Also Mir deserves some credit regardless of what shape Nog was in, he still looked fantastic and still had to actually go out there and fight well to finish the fight, just like Cruz and Vera did; you can only fight the guy in front of you.

I personally thought big Nog looked shot vs Mir, I was suprised how sharp he looked vs Randy - Im glad he won because it would have been an injustice for Randy (also one of my favourite fighters) to have a win over Nog as Minotauro has been the superior HWT of the two.
Maybe there was something wrong with Nogueira vs Mir, Ive never seen him look as bad..... ever.
I hope he kicks Mir`s ass & goes on to beat Lesnar, the guy is a true legend of MMA & without question the best HWT in MMA history outside of Fedor.

How on Earth can you call him average? He beat 3 of the last 4 UFC champs, and had a remarkable career before that as well. If he's average who the fuck isn't? If he fought in pride you'd be calling him a legend, it's absurd.
Seriously, his kneebar you call "fortunate" but how is it any different than all the subs Nog has after taking a beating? He's got one of the best offensive guards of any heavyweight ever.
If Mir signed to fight Fedor you would be calling him great; if you can rationalize Rogers into one of the best up and comers and an actual worthwhile matchup, how can you call Mir average?

Iv always thought Mir is an average fighter and thats my opinion. He blows to hot and cold for my liking. No one knows "which" Frank Mir is going to turn up and frankly (no pun intended) he's more off than he is on.
And Rogers is an unbeaten prospect. The only reason why the fight is interesting is because of that as well as his power. Mir on the other hand is a seasoned vet who is a well known quantity, with multiple humiliating losses. He was beaten up vs Brock Pe de Pano and Vera. He's JJ may rock your world but not mine.

First off, If you've read the previous posts in this thread I said somewhere that in Jiu Jitsu Mir is a step below Minotauro. But still with that being said, Nog won't sub Mir. He couldn't sub Couture, Nog isn't gonna sub Mir who holds a blackbelt himself. Nog couldn't catch Barnett either and that's because Barnett knows what he's doing on the ground, and so does Mir. I mentioned Mir's strenght plus his IQ on the ground because if he grabs a solid hold of Nog, it could very well look nasty.
Secondly, Mir is always southpaw. That's his natural stance.
Third, if Nog looked confused that wasn't because of a staph infection. It's because he was being outboxed. Staph infection sapps your energy, not your sense to move your damn head which Minotauro hardly does anyway. Bottom line is Minotauro has been punished pretty much his whole career and finally got his lights shut off. When you've been hit as often as Minotauro has eventually it's gonna catch up with you. Stop making excuses for him. Mir has a more valid excuse as for why he lost to Pe De Pano & Vera. HE WAS COMING OFF A BROKEN LEG. And at least he has proof. Minotauro doesn't.
Fourth, Nog IS believing his own hype. Beating a 46 yr old Couture does not mean he's elite again. I never disrespected his skill or the man himself. Others have when he lost to Mir by calling him a punching bag and a walking corpse.
Fifth, Right now Mir is better than Nog and as far your top 30, in MMA Mir ranks extremely high on the ground. Try top 5. And if you don't believe that then you're the one from the crack smoking parallel universe.

Mir has more to gain out of this fight than Nog, Nog only has a few fights in him and if Mir has 2 wins over Nog on his record well...... it elevates his status
Nog has more to gain from a rematch than Mir. Mir beat him already. Until Nog can beat him, Mir is known as the guy that knocked him out. Nog has more to gain, not Mir. He would just be aiming for a 2nd victory and Nog would have to PROVE he can beat him.
