View Full Version : Winky gone crazy?

Just read on boxingtalk that Wright says he's willing to make 147lbs if a fight with De La Hoya was made.
Is this guy for real or what? No way on earth Wright makes Welter. Damn, I don't even think he could make 154lbs again, let alone a weight class below that!

Winky is even less likely to make 147 than Oscar is.
As with everyone else, Winky wants to fight Oscar for the large payday, but I don't think he gets the fight with him.
He'll have to look elsewhere for a big money fight.
He should've taken it with a rematch with Taylor.

Or he's just expressing how skeptical he is of Oscar making 147 again. =P inda fun way to do it, too.

That's my guess. Oscar looked like a skeleton just trying to make 154.

he can make 147lbs but then anybody would kick his ass
No, he won't.

Oscar wouldn't take this fight at any weight. Risk being humiliated... and for what?

Winky will seek the name fights against over matched opponents, such as would be Oscar at this point. Don't expect to see Wright in with any top class hard hitting MW's, because it won't happen.
I could see him going to 154, I'd respect him for that, if he fought some top competition.
But please no more 'big name' circle jerking.

Hes sounding desperate for the DLH fight.
Its like the guy when he gets rejected by a girl resorts to begging. Its not going to work, so dont make it worse.
DLH will not fight him in a million years. Of course Winky wants the fight and wants it bad. EVERYONE in boxing wants that DLH fight. Its all about the $$$$

He could make 154 for sure. But what else is new? Everyone wants to fight DLH because he's a guaranteed huge pay day. And in his post fight interview with Hopkins, he said he wants DLH and then he would retire. In other words, i will get my big pay day and then i CAN retire.
But there is no way DLH is stupid enough to get in the ring with Wright at 154 because DLH would get destroyed.

Winky could make 154, and maybe...maybe.. 147. He's looked awfully soft above 154.

Yeah, at 170, he had looked flabby. At 160, he looked solid. But 154 is his best weight by far and he can make it if he wants to.

It has nothing to do with De La Hoya not wanting to be "humiliated" or "destroyed"
Fact is, Winky has never neither the fan base & cross over appeal to warrant even thinking of fighting De La Hoya. He has proven to be a boring fighter in an out of the ring. Name one thing he brings to the table to warrant being part of the cash cow? He has no belt, he has no fanbase, he has no appeal, he has no story. His last fight was a loss.
And yes - he is too good of a boxer, doesn't risk anything in the ring, so he is not susceptible to getting knocked out.
Who wants another boring 12 round decision?
Winky doesn't have much time left...he should look at realistic options if he doesn't want to retire instead of wasting his time trying for the easy money.

THere aren't many that want to see a fight with Wright and DLH. It's just not a fan freindly fight. DLH wants a fight that will be exciting. Winky isn't exactly exciting. Plus Winky is a huge threat. He has the skills to beat DLH at 147, 154...whatever....of course DLH has all the skills and tools to beat Winky, but there is no reward for DLH to accept this fight.
Beating Winky will just be anther feather in his cap, loosing would cost more of his legacy. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing this fight but it's just not realistic that it's going to happen.

lol...DLH has and never will get destroyed by anyone. He is ALWAYS competitive against the best and he wins and looses against the worlds best...but again...it's ALWAYS competitive. I agree the fight won't happen but I don't know who would win at 154 or 147 it's a toss up.

I'd argue he has a decent fan base these days.
I think Winky also at this juncture of his career offers a big name for another fighter to take on, if Winky could get to 147 there's LOTS of fights out there, but I'm not sure he can.
154 doesn't have the fights he wants, and he isn't going to be as competitive at 160+ against young hungry fighters, but still there's fights at 160 with the likes of Pavlik, Abraham, Duddy, and of course a rematch with Taylor.
Though I think a fight between him and ODLH at 154 would be a big and good fight that would sell well on PPV.

At this stage in his career, i don't think DLH can afford too many tune up fights. So he's going to fight top level fighters anyways.
And i disagree that him beating Wright is just another feather in his cap. It would boost his legacy considerably IMO. DLH hasn't done squat in years. To me, he comes across as a guy who has accepted being the lesser man in the ring. He sounded like that against Hopkins (DLH was the smaller guy excuse) and against PBF (DLH was fighting the P4P king). He's contempt with losing.
Why not fight Wright and take another loss against the great "southpaw defensive wizard"?

Having a win over Winky would be a nice Feather but DLH legacy is pretty much in tact the way it is...loosing will diminish his legacy more...winning at this point won't do that mcuh more not matter who he fights unless it's a guy like Floyd Mayweather or Bhop. Beating Winky would be a boost but not anything to warrant him taking the risk.
Loosing to Bhop he was the samller guy, but he went out there and tried to beat him...Hope was just bigger stronger and smarter.
With Floyd, DLH didn't accept that he lost b/c he honestly felt he won. He stated that time and time again. IT was a really, really close fight but I think Floyd edged DLH after the 9 round or so when DLH abandoned his Jab almost completely.
DLH right now is not going to take such a HUGE risk that doesn't offer him or his legacy much in return. Yes....having a W over Wink is great, but it won't do much...BHops legacy hasn't shot out of the stratosphere after beating Wink....DLH would be no different. IMO.

Why shouldnt Winky at least try to make this fight. He knows DLH didnt want nothing to do with him even when they were both at 154. DLH couldve picked either Floyd or Winky and he didnt choose the latter bcuz he knew Floyd might beat him but not knock him out. A few posters are saying that DLH/ Wright wouldnt be that exciting but I'll bet you it would be better than the overhyped DLH/ May Jr fight. At least you know for sure Winky will be pressing the action for 12 rds. However, I dont think Winky can make 147 but just wants to scare DLH from going down there.

Thanx for being open minded. I thought being an Oscar fan you mightve "forgotten" that Winky has been calling out Oscar for years, even when DLH was still with Arum. I can see the fight going down like DLH/Sturm all over again but a little worse bcuz Winky seems to get extra motivated when it comes to DLH.

Hey im a fan, but its a dirty little secret that really isnt a secret, if that makes sense. Winky, has more than paid his dues, and if this is true that hes gonna go down to 147 a weight that his never been at professionally specifically to fight Oscar, then Oscar cant deny him any longer.

Not to mention if Oscar pulls it out it would be redemption for his losses to Mosley and Tito... He should definately fight a tune-up though, someone tough and somewhat defensive, there are alot of bangers at 147 so i dunno who that would be.

OMG,
I cannot even believe that people are even entertaining the idea that Winky Wright, (yeah that same guy who takes on ALL comers and doesn't dodge anyone), would actually turn down a fight with DLH. That's sort of like saying that Hopkins avoided a fight with DLH because he was scared. Makes no sense at all.
Wright has wanted DLH for a long time as any top level fighter wants DLH because of the money and the fact that DLH's status doesn't equal his current abilities in the ring.

If Winky finds a way to get to 147, that would make that division rival past welterweight divisions in depthness, that would be crazy to think that Winky and Oscar would barely make the top five, with Mosley, Mayweather, Hatton, Cotto, Williams, Cintron, Margarito and others hawking around there.

About 2 years ago, when Winky was the new hotshot. Oscar offered him 5 or 6 mill. Winky immediately said no, you can offer me more and DLH said fuck this and moved on.
Winky will fight anyone but he is pretty stupid. He turned down Taylor rematch and I'm quite sure he turned down a Mosley match because money wasn't good enough.
Every time Winky was offered more money than he has ever earned but claimed he deserves more. Winky isn't the best businessman, a bit like Bernstein for Marquez.
I've made a post on this before and established that DLH never really ducked everyone. He ended up fighting all the champs from every weight class. He never dominated a weight class but he never ducked anyone.
Only two guys he never fought were Lopez at 147 and a guy who I forget his name at 135. DLH was busy fighting MUCH bigger names. DLH and Forrest never crossed paths and when Wright was a somebody DLH offered him out. DLH also offered Mosley out a third time.

it makes no sense to me. His best chance is to wait for the Taylor-Pavlik fight and challenge them. He has a 50-50 chance of beating a Taylor in a rematch and 75% chance of beating Pavlik imo. Pavlik leaves himself open and Winky will counter him all night. Stay at Middle Winky
I hate this show biz crap...just be a warrior and fight Ouma, Sylvester, Duddy or Asikainen for the belt that Taylor/Pavlik vacates. Or fight Abraham for his belt. Or fight Sturm and take a belt to defend. :D
Winky is overdue for a fight with DLH...he deserves it, he beat Mosley and Tito BADLY and drew with Taylor...it would be a chance for DLH to redeem the losses against Mosley and Tito...Winky and Forrest are the only 2 elites DLH hasn't fought of his era...he NEEDS to fight 1 of them if he is going to continue to fight...
