fair play to clinton, if some domestic fighters had the same attitude toward fighting as him, the sport would be in much better health, balls on him like a bengali tiger

I think its the right time. A big thanks to Clinton, someone who did British Boxing proud. Just a shame he didn't get the recognition that he deserved from the media and public over here.
Enjoy your retirement Clinton.

Good timing, he's a had a career to be proud of and doesn't need to stick around to be used as a stepping stone by up and coming fighters.

Raise a glass to one of the best around !
The look on Rico Hoyes face when he realised he was in with a real fighter is still one of my favourite boxing moments.

Good move Clinton :good
Top guy who's achieved a hell of a lot in boxing; British, C'wealth, Euro and World champ. Did everything the proper way and was always prepared to take on the best. Hopefully he stays involved with the sport in some capacity and passes on his knowledge.

Top bloke. Shame we never someone avoided himj and refused to give us fans a top domestic World champ vs World champ fight but oh well.............
On a serious note though I met Clinton in York when he came to one of the boxing nights we had in the Army. Top bloke who was training at the time yet still dedicated a night to come and watch the show/raise some money and present some awards :good
I wish him the best
A more honest pro you couldn't find, proven by the face he was honest enough with himself to walk away at the right time

That was never gonna happen cos an ageing Clinton may just ruin Cleverleys up and coming career !

Great Warrior. Great Champion and Great Man
From the Bottom To The Top. He should be used as a role model to lads who are going wayward. Glad he retired at right time. Hope he stays in sport working with youngsters and young fighters.

Agreed mate, wouldn't have liked to see him drop back down to domestic level, I think hanging them up is a wise decision.
A great servant to British boxing. Now its time for the likes of Bellew and Cleverly to kick on and carry the mantle at light heavyweight for Britian on the world scene.

Gutsy fighter who achieved more than he should have. He had strong opposition.
Did so well due to the mandatory challenger policy of the IBF more than anything else.

I don't think anyone could not respect or like Clinton Woods. A top pro gave made the most of his career and gave it the dedication it deserves.

Great example to kids who may not be flash, who may not be naturally gifted in the sport.
Keep working hard and you can achieve big!
Won basically everything we get into the sport for.
Well deserved retirement.

Clinton Woods can go out of the sport with his head held high - willing to fight the best at any place any time, the heart of a lion and was a credit to British Boxing :thumbsup

One of the truly worst British world Champions in history .. Such a predictable, 'domestic' style , hard working but lacking any kind of skill. All this, 'Thanks for the memories Clinton' stuff from you guys makes me want to vomit .. He should have retired after that abysmal display against Tarver ..
Theres people on this forum who slag off Hatton, Calzaghe, Khan, Bruno, Naz and Froch but give a guy like Clinton Woods all the credit in the world, its an absolute joke. Just another example of the Brits loving a 'try hard' with no skill .. I have full respect for Clinton Woods as i do for anybody who gets in the ring, but he was a domestic level fighter who picked up a belt in a weak, 'ultra political' division. Any top light Heavyweight in history would absolutely annihilate him with ease .. Im not sorry he's retired, he's picked up some good paydays in his career for the talent that he had, kind of like Junior Witter ...... As i say, this post sounds harsh, but once again i have full respect for Clinton Woods but he wasnt a great fighter ..

Yeah, whatever. Fair play for him realising he's absolutely balls deep in rubbishness and couldn't fight out of a wet paper bag.
Clinton "I coulda been a contender" Woods. Have mercy.
And I'm not doubting he's a nice guy either.

That last comment is just so typical of our British mentality, your saying as a positive, 'Richie Woodhall and Clinton Woods are like peas in a pod' .. I would totally agree, but its in a totally negative way. Its the same kind of mentality that drools over Henry Cooper's career as if he was an all time great .... Too many people confuse, 'being a nice guy who tries hard', with being a guy with true boxing talent ...... We Brits dont like winners, we dont like talent, we seem to need to bring talented people down. While treating the truly average, no skill, 'try hards' like they are heroes to be emulated ...... If Cooper, Woods and Woodhall were American, the American public would be rather more truthful

Woodhall is nothing but a Calzaghe nut-hugger as well. Listen to him in the Calzaghe/Jones Jr fight, then vomit.

One or two posts are out of order i reckon!
To say he couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag? To say he was crap?
Hang on, did he not win British,Commonwealth,European and a world title?
Fight 3 of the biggest names in his division, including a legend?
Tell ya what, i hope i get to train or manage a fighter as crap as him.
Whether u like someone or not, u have to give credit where its due.
He won just about every title going, he's the first to admit he's not the most skilful or flashiest boxer, but he's been very very successful and came up from the small hall/dinner show circuit all the way to the world title.

I'm only forming this on having to sit up and being bored the fuck out of by a Tarver/Woods fight that put me right the fuck off any scent in appreciating Woods, so my standpoint is from a completely bias view, by the way.

Cryin shame the guy never got more recognition for his achievments in the game.

Some very nice tributes here to a genuine champion. Anyone who says otherwise is clearly looking past Woods' achievements on the domestic and European scene as well as the world scene:good.
If you don't appreciate fighters like Woods, as well as the contribution he has made to British boxing, then you shouldn't be posting in this thread- plain and simple. Take your misinformed tripe and post it elsewhere:good.

Watched his fight with Cloud the other night and you can't really knock his tactics at all.... infact after watching the second round I thought Woods was going to stroll past him but I was suprised at how solid Cloud's chin was. In the end Woods showed some baws to make it all the way to the 12th round which showed the character of the guy.... I don't think there are many 37 year olds that would have lasted the distance.
All the best Woods

i would rather he kept fighting at brittish and euro level for a couple more years made some extra money stayed at the above levels not take a beating then retire..reason
i have never met woods but he comes across as a decent bloke who has had to work hard. realised he was not the most talented but slogged away and made himself a success.so i would not like to see him come back in three years when he has absolutely nothing left

I can't fucking believe the people who have a go at Clinton just because he fell short against the likes of Jones jr and Tarver. FFS!
He made the most of his limited natural talent, almost always showed big heart, and I give big credit to the man for what he achieved.
