View Full Version : WTF? Arum: Khan was offered Pac fight
Arum, speaking exclusively to The Daily Telegraph, explained: “Before we had signed with Cotto [for the Nov 14 fight in Las Vegas] Amir’s name was on the table, we offered him the fight, but his father, and his family felt it was too early in his career.”
“Amir Khan has all the attributes of a great champion, and I think he’s going to be a superstar in the sport,” said Arum. “Okay, so he had a loss in his career, he made a mistake, but he looks great now. He was young when he made the mistake against the Colombian fighter [Breidis] Prescott. It was a great performance which won him the world title against [Andreas] Kotelnik, and you can only see him getting better. I can definitely see Amir and Manny meeting in the ring down the line.”

Obviously fabricated. Khan has never ducked anyone he thought he could lose to.

It's feasible. Arum offered Michael Jennings a fight against Cotto after he bumped into him in a hotel lounge, didn't even know he was a boxer at the time...

Im not sure whether this is story is true. If Khan did turn it down then he was right to do it, he's learning from Roach and now is not the time to change trainers, and now is certainly not the time to fight the PFP King. A win over Kotelnik doesnt prepare you for Manny Pac ..
I'm trying to understand what would be in it for Manny to take this fight, its not a huge money fight as Khan hasnt been 'launched' in the states, and even though im no fan of Khan, dealing with his speed and irritating running away could be annoying for Manny .... I think Arum is just dropping Khan's name in there for his American Launch, thats all this story is about ..

Amir Khan isnt no were near ready for that type of opponent YET, plus dont think Manny would of went with a Khan fight when he could get bigger pay days fighting the likes of Cotto, Mayweather or Marquez rematch.

lol, funny fight, i don't know much about boxing yeah - but i know Manny wouldn't just knock khan straight out...
I think khan would make a fight out of it at least..... if thy were to fight in a months time, i reckon i would back khan to win.. hes got a dodgy chin, but i don't think khan would walk onto any of his punches... i think khan could knick the fight on speed and punch output, and stay out of trouble from long distance!!!
i don't take none of this "khan hate" seriously and people who say Manny would "kill khan" - they are just going of reputation... - just coz khans got a dodgy chin don't man he ain't got skills
and i ain't bigging up khan either, and i ain't Asian

man i find that seriously hard to believe

It also sounds like Bob wants Khan under his wing, as Manny his top star got maybe 1 or 2 more fights in him, and right now looks like boxing is not on the top of Manny's list as he got lots on his table back home.

Arum has managed to get Pac a warm up fight before trying to get a fight with Khan, I doubt his gamble will pay off though.

I saw this on the Telegraph's website yesterday as well. You always expect an ulterior motive when it comes to Arum- I think it's plausible that Top Rank might have some sort of American promotional deal in the offing for Mr Khan:think. Who knows what that slimey bugger Arum is up to:think:blood.

Salita has a profoundly padded record. That said, there was that American journo who said Salita was P4P #1 based purely on the fact he hadn't been beaten:roll::lol:.

You know i think i met that Journo in NYC he was burning my ears off about Yuri Foreman!
 I love his accent.
I like the Salita fight anyway- always good to get the mando out of the way and he's a decent name without posing too much of a risk as well. Then, hopefully, we'll see some unification fights to shut up the jokers and haters.

Whether you like them or just hate them promoters are always thinking way ahead of anyone else in the boxing game and they have always got an angle on whats next, even if its a rumour or bs or planned someones done it for some reason.............

There's being offered a fight & then there's being offered a fight! I highly doubt nay formal offer was made to the Khan camp in respect of facing Manny! If there was a formal or even serious discussions, whoever offered it to the Khan's shoudl be fcuking put in stocks! Khan is improving, but he's not ready for a guy like Pacquaio & I'm not sure he will EVER be ready for such an opponent!
Pacquiao would hurt Khan. Amir's skills are improving, but the question marks still remain about his durability, even at LWW!

I should say Arum is a fool for trying to make that fight but it would be the lineal champ fighting a genuine titlist in his next fight so I can't fault it really.

Yeah it would of been Manny (IBO) vs Khan (WBA).

This is why todays world champions are not all actually world champions in a true sense of the word. Once you are world champ you should face the toughest opponents possible (unless you do not believe in your own ability) but anyone who thinks they "are not ready" shouldnt try and pass themselves off as champ.
The title these days is nothing more than just that.....a title.

Yeah, the IBO is much better. Actually, why not add credence to the IBA, WBF and WBU as well while we're at it? Explain why you think it means 'nothing' then, Achilles. Is it due to the fact that you can't be stripped; do not have to face sub-standard opposition as mandos; or have to actually beat the legitimate champion/ have to be a top 2 contender and face another top 2 contender (3 in special circumstances) if the title is vacant?
:blood Don't be daft, Darni.

The Ring is another bullshit title, the only difference between that and the IBO is that they don't charge sanctioning fees.
Had Ring Magazine actually awarded the titles to the genuine Linear claimant at the time they were introduced, they would have had a starting point.
From there, they should have looked into the possibility of amalgamating the alphabets one by one and introducing mandatory contenders and genuine rankings systems taking into account regional titles and H2H results.
For example, the IBF (and WBO I think) have Kiko Martinez ranked above Munroe - and also Anthony Small above Moore - why exactly?

Bob Arum wanted to sign Khan for Top Rank, But Khan was offered more money by De La Hoya to sign for Golden boy.
He can have any promotor he wants, Bob Arum is much better at building up his fighters like Juan Manuel Lopez/Cotto, Golden boy is not as good as building up fighters profiles, They had Ortiz massacred by Maidana. But Bob Arum pays his fighters less than Golden Boy.
That being said Khans deals with De La Hoya is for three fights, For each fight he earns $1.25 mil minimum, That doesnt include what Khan earns from UK television, His Reebok sponser, Or advertising.
Just like Nike used Tiger woods to promote Nike golf, Reebok is trying to use Khan to promote Reebok boxing. Funny thing is Khan earns more from Reebok than Manny earns from Nike.
khan get more money than mayweather from reebok to:think

What they failed to mention is the fact that they were looking after pacs own interests, and that the fight would be staged in 2019, so as to give manny an easy sort of night, but Khan insisted that manny would not be quite past it yet.
